F650GS - Love it, it really is zippy if ridden well (most riders at my IAM course are amazed by fast and smooth it can be)..decently balanced for shorter riders due to fuel tank under the seat (I am 5'4"). Vibrations are disconcerting from 70mph and faster, take 2 teeth off rear sprocket which helps drop the revs. A Scottoiler is needed to avoid eaten chains. Buy a better windshield if you going to do some long touring trips. Fluted grips are a pain in the $%^se for smaller sized hands.
One can quite happily ride all day, get off have a beer/coffee/munchies and get on and play again.

Ideal touring bike, travelled 250 mile before my bum got numb due to the comfort of the seating position. Handles responsively on all roads, ok on motorways but not the quickest bike top end but who wants speeding tickets anyway. This bike somehow just makes you feel really safe and in complete control at all times.

UKBIKE doesn't even have the name of this new BMW model in its list: It's the G650 X (or Cross) Country, not to be confused with the earlier and more pedestrian GS650. My wife has had both and much prefers the later 'supermoto'. The new bike is much lighter and handles better, dropping easily into sharp bends without any fuss. The earlier GS had to be pushed into a bend and felt altogether heavier. The new Minarelli engine (made in Italy) is noticeably more powerful, especially at the bottom end, and will fly away from the lights, pulling a wheelie if you're not restrained!! She hasn't tried it off-road, but then it's not intended for that as it's really an upmarket hooligan's road bike!! Front and rear suspension is adjustable, which also changes the ground clearance and seat height, which is not too high. The seat is comfortable, even for two. Handling is excellent and very forgiving; braking is good from the front and rear Brembo brakes. Being a single it's very economical; running costs and reliability are still to be discovered but a BMW seldom lets you down.
This is no motorway cruiser, but in town and on winding country roads you'll get more than enough thrills per cc.

Agree with most of I.Phillips review, but must add one minor point, having bought my machine 2nd hand, with 26K on the clock, was very pleased with M/C until the front sprocket fell off in central London, speaking to BMW dealer, he had heard of this before, and this could entail a new sprocket shaft being fitted (whole engine strip down, to replace) later models had nuts to secure sprocket, instead of circlips, check before buying.

Cheap insurance, very easy round town,(highish seat and big mirrors=great visibility) powerful enough for town & B road riding, reliable, good weather protection and stable enough on motorways, comfy for 150 miles and good with pillion/luggage.... doesn't like collisions with myopic Saab convertible drivers
