BMW K1100
I was seduced by the grace and power of this big red BMW.
I Fell for it straightaway and signed on the dotted line.
On the road the power and poise are second to none, cars move aside and the weather passes you bye. That the good side.
The dark side...You need to be built like Hulk Hogan to move the thing, and when you drop it (which you will)have your mates on speed-dial as you will need at least one of them to help pick it up.
Getting it out of the garage is difficult, so it either stays in there or on the road to avoid the hernia of getting it out.
Love the bike, hate the weight.
Smooth. Reliable. Assured. HUGE.

The K1100LT - In summary, a long distance high comfort sofa on wheels, your mobile living room. It's true, it's a bit of a monster when stood still and the weight is still there when on the move, but great comfort and touring ability. The finish is built to last, my bike has 134,000 miles on the clock and still strong, with the cycle parts also bearing up well.
There's all the usual touring mod cons, even for such an elderly bike, heated grips, two power outputs, 4 speaker casette/radio, which will link nicely to your ipod and of course the electric screen which is just wonderful. You can set the screen to higest mode and ride all day with your visor up or drop the screen and the character of the bike changes.
Character is an interesting thing in bikes, sometimes you want it and sometimes you don't, fortunately the K1100LT's character is a bonus without the unpleasant side effects of some bikes 'character'... like breakdowns!
The bike is woefully under geared, but this can also be a bonus. There's no need to stir the gearbox unduly, just leave it in 5th for everything from 20mph upwards. Or play the gears and it will howl, though maybe just a bit too much weight to make a flickable bike, fine in the twisty's, just don't expect modern race bike ot sports touring type handling. The handling is certainly not enhanced by the rubber mounted handlebars, which seem to have a lot of movement, but you soon get used to. Though there are modifications which can stiffen these acceptably.
Tank range is about 180 to 200 miles and fuel consuption anything from 50 - 60 mpg, not bad at all for such a big bike. However it does use oil, this is not just my higher mileage bike, but a feature across all the K1100's, work on roughly 1 litre every 1,500 miles and that's about right - they all do that sir.
This really is the last of the big, high quality build BMWs. The build quality on the later bikes seems to have taken a hit. Not an expensive bike to run, but one that will run and run... bring on my pie and slippers :-)

I bought one because I have always liked mile-munchers. Downside first: weighs a ton, very high seat if you are Mr Average Height (care needed at walking pace), dealer servicing very expensive, stupid indicator and dangerous horn switch. Upside: will go on for ever if looked after (twinned with Scania). Covers very long distances quickly and without the need for physiotherapy at the end of each day. Great load carrying, great weather protection and heated grips. Fantastic road presence (especially in red) - it is a truck. Don't be frightened by claims that you can't maintain it yourself - that applies to the next generation of BMWs. The tool kit is almost as good as the one on my Shogun. And it's different - something that makes us bikers in the first place. If these things don't add up to good reasons to own the bike, then buy a Jap multi - nothing wrong with those either.

BMW's future classic the K1100RS is beautiful, practical and awesome by any standards - I'd never sell it! Imagine having a sports tourer that'll sit effortlessly at 150mph on any of Europe's 'fastest' roads for 45 minutes and then potter around a village or town at 15mph without any stresses or strains - and that includes the rider! The bike is excellent in just about all departments weight being the exception, but only when lugging it on and off the stand and manoeuvering it around it goes really well for a big tourer. It handles well through the twisties . . . its also very quiet and smooth at 120mph too! but there are not many roads where you can do that! After 39 years of riding dozens of different bikes for reasons which would take too long to explain, and a desire to tour I opted for a bike with full weather protection and load carrying ability and I have toured around most of Scotland and the Lake District. The bike has been exceptional on roads as diverse as motorways, A and B class roads. The reliability and build quality are second to none, depreciation is very low, petrol consumption is good. Spare prices are high (but you tend not to need many), plus there is an excellent network of dealers selling guaranteed second-hand bits and pieces). I use Avon tyres which seem to grip better in the wet and I have fitted spotlights on the crashbars and linked them into the main beam . . . to let dozy car drivers know I'm around . . . it also helps for night driving. I am not saying it is the B-all and end-all but it suits me for now. I still fancy an R1 though. Ah well . . . maybe one day!"

Big solid prescence on the road induces a feeling of safety. Many extra's, electric screen, ABS, Heated Grips, Radio Cass player with quad speakers, top box and panniers, even a Cigarette lighter!! But VERY Expensive servicing and parts. However a 2 wheeled Rolls Royce, which keeps its value and goes on forever
