The K1200S -Superb machine, Haven't had it long so maintenance costs etc not sure about yet.
As an avid admirer/owner of a VFR, this is the cream topping. Been touring around Switzerland 2 up with heavy loads absolutley solid as a rock and still has amazing power ! Gear changing took a bit getting used to, clunky 1-3, and now smooth as silk as engine speed and clutch action all importatnt to get a smooth ride. The balance is amazing - feels lighter than a VFR, I have the ESA suspension and oh wow, it's a joy to have - so cool.
Average about 48mpg fully loaded and have often got 55mpg on several tanks.
I don't want another bike (Three in the garage), I've had too many to mention. The BMW ticks all the boxes for me. I just love sports tourers, if you do, there's nothing else in my opinion.
I use the SW-Motech kit for fitting Givi panniers & top box - clever system, gets rid of the awful scafolding other frames leave on your bike - you can't have a mess on a K1200S
Reach your destination, take off the luggage and you've got an impressive sports machine.
I can't wait to get my leg over her tonite :-)

Recently picked up my K12 as a replacement for an R1150 rs . The k1200 has been a revalation and I haven't stopped smiling since I got it. Fuel consumption has been the biggest joy as I'm a bit of a tight wad - 50 mpg is no problem. Comfort handling and top speed are all superb and I've found if you want to go faster than the 122mph stated(on closed roads officer) just lower the screen and away you go up to 140 on the clock no problem. This little excercise over 20 mile dropped the fuel consumption down to 46mpg over a tank range. Cleaning is a doddle but generally prefer to use an old GSX750 when the weather is not so clement as the weight doesn't inspire me that much on wet British roads. Anyway in 3 weeks I've done a 1000 miles just going to work and I'm looking forward to doing loads more on it.

Excellent bike. 1 week, 2200 miles through France from Calais to Provence return, two-up full luggage (inc Givi topbox) inc Champers, 100mph plus everywhere and handles superbly through easily adjusted suspension. META M357T-V2 alarm trouble free and BT 020 grippy. Surprises most Jap riders, it is 130bhp, we don't all have pipe and slippers ant I'm a long way from 40.

Best bike out there period... rode H-D for 28yr. This is the best running, handling, most comfortable, enjoyable motorcycle I have ever ridden. My wife and I love this bike. I purchased it in April 02 its now Oct.4,02 and we have 14k trouble free miles on it. The Metzeler tires still have 4000 or 5000 miles left. the bike will by far run faster than bmw says with my 135lbs. on it and it will cruse at 100mph as easy as 60mph. I am amazed every time I ride it and I cant stay off it.

Just got back from Daytona Bike Week 2002. Rode my 1998 K1200RS from York, Pa. (2000 mi. round trip = 14.5 hours each way. rode straight through). Very comfortable ride. Legs and rear end somewhat sore after ride but thats to be expected from any bike. Passed and sneered at the Harley... I mean pick-up truck drivers on the way down and back. The bike was extremely smooth and the 130 hp K engine cruised 90 mph all day long, and wanted to do more. My only disapointment was the gas milage (150-165 per tank) as opposed to the over 200 miles I got with my '85 K100RT. I was very tempted to blow off the stop and go traffic in Daytona during Bike Week and head further south to the Florida Keys but previous obligations had been made in Daytona. I cant wait to do it again for Biketober Fest.

Fast enough for a tourer, Exedra tyres stick best..last 6000 miles. Handles infinitely better than Wing 1200 or 1500. Could do with a decent intercom system. GREAT fuel economy for a big bike 60mpg possible..average 50mpg. Dealer back up is excellent for this quality bike

Looks are great for a beemer. But not distinctive enough. 130 hp is almost too much power. On a fine strech of highway I looked down and I was at 150 mph. Wow! The areodynamics and stability at very high speeds are superb. No engine heat through the seat. Still a noticable kbike buzz in the right hand. Not happy with the width of the handle bars. The exhaust is an all to heavy bag of catalitic rocks that needs a staintune replacement. More sport than tour: Good powerband but bad MPG Excellent for two up riding. Fast two up riding. Would like to see a cruise control and outside temp gauge. Mirrors should be incorporated in the ferring. Like my old 85 k100rs
