Review
I wrote a review several weeks ago for my R1150R(abs), the review was written shortly after the servo on the abs failed which could have quite easily have been curtains for my pillion and myself.
The bike has great handling and comfort but the reliabilaty of the brakes/servos made me mark this bike down so badly.
At the end of my last review for this bike I had so little trust in the integral abs that I was either going to replace the abs unit and sell it at a cost of £1109 for the abs unit itself, or remove the abs unit and convert it to a non abs bike.
Reading several forums about the failures of the integral abs and reading one unit didnt last a year I finally removed the problematic abs unit, ordered Hell brake pipes front/rear brake switches (abs switches are normaly closed) and the distrubution piece to disconnect the front pipes from the rear, a small bit of wiring to the abs plug to get the rear lights working and hey presto a non abs R1150R.
The first thing that you notice is the power of the brakes is still there but with a lot more progressive feel. The first drive without the servos was strange - driving slowly through traffic was now a pleasant experience with non of the servo snatch on the abs version.
The handling is still spot-on, on faster twisty roads the difference between the abs and non abs becomes more apparent. Now you can feather the brakes when you need them instead of the on or off feel of the servo brakes.
The buzz word amongst most BMW dealers is to go for abs, even BMW riders seem to jump on their high horses when they speak of their abs bikes and how powerful the brakes are but abs itself can only take the brakes off if you are too savage on them and if you have a BMW with servos then you will need abs as everytime you brake its far more savage than the feel of the non abs version.
So as I have found out, don't be put off by a non abs R1150, take it for a test drive - you may just find it was the one thing that was spoiling the package.

BMW R1150R

My bike is a R1150R. I bought this bike second hand with very low miles for touring and commuting, the bike handles well as solo or pillion.
I had a Honda VFR750FV as my previous bike and although it had more top speed I still prefer the R1150R for twisty corners and rider involvement.
The standard bike has very smooth but soft suspension.
I changed these at 16000 miles due to the spring and damping going off - fitted WP front and rear which trasformed the handling.
I have tried all types of tyres on this bike and find Conti Roadtec's work best allowing you to grind the pegs quite easily and still giving bags of grip.

Now the bad bits, I have always regarded BMW as a quality brand and the reason for choosing a R1150R was because I had an old BMW R80 which was used as my work hack that had covered 130,000 miles with very few problems.
The problems I have had to face with R1150 are Clutch worn out at 26K, followed by clutch slave cylinder 27K, this is a common failing, the fact that the clutch thrust bearing is designed to be in contact all the time and is mounted in the slave cylinder with a token gesture of grease to keep it lubed for the rest of its life (or 27K )is a joke!
After the clutch side of the bike was sorted I was hoping for many more years of trouble free motoring but no! This is a modern BMW with integral ABS (this only refers to the 2000 to 2003 models because after that they fitted a diffent ABS unit), this is the biggest let down on the bike and potentially the most deadly I have ever encountered on any bike.
My problem with it was when riding two up on dry roads and dropping down a steep gradient I applied the brake to find the front brake locked and my pillion just hanging on - the problem was brake failure, no brake warning was displayed until the lever was applied which by then was leaving it late for the corner which I just scraped round.
Checking the brakes at the time the rear circuit was off but now the ABS servo for the front has stopped working and a replacment would cost £1109 - this bike's brake system is a disaster. It works fine when its new but mine has failed at 29K, now I have so little confidence in it I might remove the ABS from the bike and convert it to non ABS.
I bought the ABS version of this bike as a safety feature, it's hard to believe that the ABS could have caused a serious accident for me.
Now I can't use the bike until I get the funds to repair it or convert it.

BMW R1150GS

My bike R1150GS is an all round superb machine for comfort, power, control and riding position, having previously done some touring on sports bikes this machine ia a dream to ride. I can ride for hours and feel commfortable and sure of every move the bike makes, meaning I can do further distances before starting to ache.

I would recoomend this bike to anyone who is serious about wanting to do more touring, even 2 up it handles and copes extremely well, best bike I have ever owned.

I recently bought my 1150GS after owning a Triumph Daytona 955 and having done 2500 miles touring around France. I decided touring was something i wanted to do much more of so looked for a GS after seeing so many on my tour.

I have done some distance already but not as far as on the Triumph but must say I can't wait to do a tour next year. I find the GS a superb and easy bike to ride.

The bike handles well in the dry and wet, has great brakes and power delivery. Although this bike can be a bit tall and heavy for some people, it is quite easy to ride once you are comfortable with it.

I recently did two days travelling 300 miles each day without any real discomfort, and only needed to stop for the usual a coffee and pee, I look forward to another long journey next year also with my partner as she also likes it on the back which is great as she would not get on the Daytona.

I hope you like my review and would recommend the GS to anyone who is looking for that comfort factor as well as the fun in a bike.

A very underrated bike. It's a comfortable, easy-to-ride bike which is a great all-rounder. At home in town, on country roads, touring or on motorways.

Would not buy another Beemer to be honest. ABS problems (never totally cured), electronic fuel control packed up and battery had a thermal over-run due to bad charging.. all in the first year. (all fixed by BMW no questions asked Although BMW would not fix the paint up on the frame where the battery acid had eaten through. Having said that.. Great mile eater and tourer, not bad through traffic but top heavy at slow speeds when loaded up. I think there are bikes around that are better value for money.

Developed a potentially deadly fault at 13000 miles. When the bars are turned more than a few degrees the ignition (and consequently the lights and brakes) cuts out.
