Honda VTR

Sept '99 (V)
Overall Rating:
Review
i am on my forth Honda Sp1, and whilst being quite a sports bike with a difference from the run of the mill bikes, it does what its meant to do, it handles very well, goes like the clappers and really is a multi bike,
i love them, also an excellent track bike with pedigree.
a good choice for a V twin.

Great linear power from the awesome engine.Starts first time and pulls well in all 6 gears.
A really easy to live with bike with easy home servicing as most of the engine is exposed.
Tyre life is good.Im running Pirelli diablo corsa and they are lasting well. They are a bit over the top for this bike tho and will run 208s next time.
Fitted micron oval cans and they havnt upset the jetting and sound great.
All in a great bike getting about 110 miles to a tank but can go to 90 with 30 mpg if going for it.
Best mods you can do are, fit Ohlins front springs and fit manual cam chain tensioners. The tensioner springs break and it WILL wreck your motor.Ebc HH pads and steel brake lines will transform your brakes.
Early models are the more powerfull.

This is my second bike, I had a GS500 previously (Good learner bike).
I was amazed at the VTR, as a newish rider I was worried about dropping, crashing or falling off my new toy. The worry was unfounded, the bike took me for a comfortable and smooth ride. I'm way more comfortable with riding a bigger bike. I opened up the amazing engine and away we went, fast, controlled and great fun.
The VTR can stroll along while I enjoy the view or can be opened up and compete with the big boys and looks great doing it.
1. The only problems are the fuel range, (100 miles to a tank.) When I used the bike for touring in Europe was a pain keep stopping for fuel.
2. Cam Chain Tensioner's prone to braking, can be worked around by frequent srevicing and changing CCT's on recomended time frames.
In conclusion this is a great all rounder, good for a bit of fun, touring or on the daily drudge to work. Would recommend for any age, experience or riding style.

I've had this bike for 2 years and is great for the shorter people in life like myself (4ft 10ins)
I ride out with 8 guys who all have 600cc plus and the bike keeps up with them. Just doesn't have the acceleration like their bikes.
It also starts every time no problem and passes its mot without a hitch.
It does about 180miles to the 10 pound tank

I Have always had In-Line 4's in the past, until one day I overcome and purchased a cheap VTR1000F known as a Firestorm. Well this is the second one I have owned now and Well... What can I say, you can't buy so much character and performance for so little.
Such a great looking bike with different curves in the right places and with the roar from the after market pipes fitted people certainly do look even if you are half a mile behind them.
It is superbly reliable being a Honda and all round a great bike. I have ridden it in all conditions being an all round weather rider, only tyres and servicing required so far... the latter getting done very little as we all known Honda's are reliable.
I know it's no Duke, but with a performance exhaust it makes the hairs on your neck stand up, and the V-Twin deep roar always puts a smile on your face and you never tire of cracking open that throttle listening to that sound in a low revving gear and including that sweet handling!
Alot people moan about the front suspension being too soft, but too be honest i have had no problems even with 2 up as well, handling is great and the seat is comfy.
All I ask if you decide to purchase one check with the last owner when the CCT (Cam Chain Tensioners) were last changed or replaced, as they are known to fail on this model and cause engine problems. I decided to take the plunge and fit manual APE CCT's certainly worth a Google on this subject.
The only bad point is what we call the RLOD (Red Light of Death) nothing serious so don't worry. Being a thirsty drinking big V-Twin, the fuel comsumption around town can certainly be dissapointing. But on the open road its not too bad. 2002 model onwards have bigger tanks from 16L to 19L so this helps a little.
Apart from that all years of the bike are the same with little modifications 2002 onwards.
Alot of the older models are now cheap out there, as said if you want a reliable Honda with a grin factor and with plenty of torque that pulls like mad this is the bike for you. ;)

Great bikes, easy to ride with a wide spread of torque making rapid progress easy. A little thirsty which is made more noticable by a small tank, touring range to reserve light 100 - 110 miles, track days 80 odd. Handling/road holding easily improved with fork respring and preferably revalve, new shock if you have the dosh but not essential.

Just got VTR 1000cc a week ago. VERY impressed. With a dyno kit and upgraded exhausts, you really don't need any more power than it produces unless you have some kind of death wish. Handling is very solid, although the mirrors are useless. One very happy customer here.
