THIS IS MY SECOND XJ900F SHAFT DRIVE YAMAHA THIS IS A BETTER BIKE THAN THE LATER XJ900S EVEN THOUGH THAT IS A GREAT BIKE AS WELL THE XJ 900F IS FROM THE FAMILY OF XJ SHAFT DRIVE BIKES ie XJ650/700/750/ AND SECA MODELS BUT STYLED FOR THE BRITISH MARKET SO IT HAS A COMFORTABLE RIDING POSITION WHICH IS NEEDED AS THIS BIKE IS VERY CAPABLE OF LONG RANGE TOURING DOING 190 MPG BEFORE IT HITS RESERVE AND 30MILES ON RESERVE AT LEAST. A TOP SPEED OF 142MPH TOP GEAR DOWN TO 30 MPH AND ALL THE WAY TO TOP SPEED WITHOUT CHANGEING GEAR IT HAS A VERY SLIGHT ROUGH PATCH BETWEEN 4,500 AND 5000 RPM MY FIRST ONE HAD THE SAME PATCH BUT I FIND 90MPH CRUISING JUST ABOVE THIS PATCH AND 65MPH JUST BELOW. VERY CHEAP TO RUN AS TYRES ARE CHEAP ALL SERVICE PARTS ARE EASY TO GET HOLD OF STILL. VERY COMFORTABLE FOR A PILLION GREAT FOR ATTACHING HARD LUGGAGE TO FOR THOSE LONG TOURS.CARBS MUST BE BALANCED USING THE YICS TOOL TO GET ACCURATE RESULTS BUT NOT NEEDED TO BE DONE VERY OFTEN AND MY FIRST XJ900 ONLY NEEDED TWO SHIMS CHANGED IN 96000 MILES I STILL HAVE THEM TO SO GET ONE IF YOU WANT A GREAT CHEAP TO RUN ALL ROUND TOURING MOTORCYCLE HAVE FUN RICK

This bike is a US imported machine with the Bull Dog spirit. Mine is the XJ700X Maxim.
Very quick off the mark for a 700cc bike. Tear drop tank and a cushion seat. Beautiful cherry red and chrome. Sounds grunty, head turner, comfortable to ride.
The tank is on the small side with a mileage of about 120 before the refill light comes on.
Being an Import, there aren't too many of them about, making spares a bit difficult to obtain.
There is an internet club for XJ700 owners which is very useful for passing and sharing information.
Had the bike for 8 years and don't want to get rid of her!!!
Cheers
Pete

‘Used daily over the last eight months, it has proved not only reliable but also practical, a cracking workhorse that qualifies in low insurance group.

The bike is getting on a bit so it’s dream appeal has faded somewhat. Can recommend for cheap daily commuting’

Looks like I am the first here to write a review, well this is an old bike now but still has a great deal of rideability, they look very much like the XV Virago but with it’s inline four cylinder twin cam engine it give you a little bit excitement.
I am no expert but I am a owner of one of these bikes & I just love it, it is unassuming and does little more than it says on the tin.
If ever you get to ride one of these now ageing bikes, please do you best to enjoy the ride rather than trying to analyze or compare it to any other bike.
If the owner give there consent, give the bike a full fistful, it will go, with a top speed of about 120 mph, maybe a little more, it won’t blow you away but it will get there fairly quickly. But beware it will need nerves of steel to keep it steady & a tight grip on the breaks to stop it.
All in all I love these old bikes & although dated they are still stylish, reliable & great fun to ride.

One of Yamaha's BEST bike's ever.Had my one for 18 months and she started first time every time, great mpg (42--50)the handling was fantastic and overall performance can't fault it.Theres plenty of power there if you need it,top speed don't know(chickened out at 128,sorry officer). Looking forward to getting my next Yamaha (XJ900s)in about 2months time.Once again just a brillant bike.

Have had the bike for 4 years. I think it had had a bit of a hard life, but with a little TLC it has been an excellent first big bike. Replaced rotting twin exhaust with 4 into 1, an easy job. Keep the bike clean and dry and enjoy the ride, smooth and with enough power to put a smile on your face.

After 37 years since owning a bike, I bought a Harley 883 Sportster. After a short while, the novelty began to wear off. It was not easy to corner unless speeds were moderate, and the brakes left a lot to be desired. After two years I sold the Harley and bought a new XJ600S (September 2002) The Divi is much more comfortable, corners as fast as an old born again can and the brakes actually work. On the down side, the build quality could be better so frequent cleaning is required, plus the 'bike has little street cred with other bikers, so what? I think it's great. Cheap insurance and very economical to own and run.

First time I got one was in 1992, when I bought a secondhand H-reg model and despatched on it for two years and 55,000 absolutely trouble free miles and then sold it for a good price to pay for my wedding. Regularly ran it 200 miles to Leeds and back with the wife on pillion and luggage filled panniers on board and was never left stranded.< >< >10 years later and after a short spell running an XS250 I got given from a friend I hankered for the power once again... and found a nice J-reg XJ600 for 500 pounds, needing a bit of fettling. I don't have a problem doing maintenance on it, changing fork seals isn't hard (6 monthly requirement if I remember it right on regular use bikes). Best thing about it is that it can keep up with larger bikes from the same era and even some bigger modern bikes, but speed isn't everything..... Its comfy for driver, pillions would like more padding on the seat, can be very economical and now this one I just bought is starting to show signs of being totally reliable, no hesitation in planning to ride to the South of Spain in a few weeks.

Very impressive bike. Engine related to FJ1200. So much torque and very tough. Now owned mine 2 years and bike despite 140,000 miles up will still cruise easily at 100mph plus ultra reliable even when used all year round cheap insurance tyres and no chain = brilliant bike

Born again biker, just swopped my Harley 883 Sportster for the 600 Divi. I'm glad I rode the Harley first. It makes me realise how easy the Divi is to ride. Plenty fast enough for me, corners and brakes better than the Harley and much smoother too. Very pleased with my purchase.
