Review Yamaha XJR1300 After riding an XJ900F for 10 years I wanted something newer and I had always liked the look of the XJR. I had a budjet of £5k so I decided to buy second hand from a dealer. Although you can pick up brand new XJR's for just over 5k I got a good deal on a 2 year old bike with 4k on the clock and from a dealer with full service history. The bike also had extras like an alarm,fender extender,tank guard etc. So all in all I thought it was a good deal for £4.25k. The bike itself is great fun to ride with loads of torque all the way through. Although its lacking the wind protection of my old XJ, I don't do the motorway thing so much now so it dosn['t matter to me, in fact I only commute about 15 miles a day through heavy traffic so the XJR is great for that. Handles very well sticks to the road in all weathers (so far)still on Dunlop standard tyres in fact just replaced rear with new Dunlop. No modifications yet apart from small screen which didnt make one bit of difference. Would think about changing exhaust as I feel the standards are a bit wide on arse end for filtering through traffic. The only real problem is that I keep missing my destination as the XJR just wants to play longer. Being really comfortable i'm only too willing to play along. The build quality is great and the engine is bullet proof. Only real downer is the finish on the paint work is a bit thin and fades real fast. The chrome work could have been a bit thicker as well. All in all its a great all rounder and very comfortable. There are alot of after market upgrades, and bits of bling to add. Service side of things looks very easy to work on just about to give my first service as i've had it a year now. Review Bought my XJR1200 brand new back in March '97. As soon as I saw one & read the reviews in the bike mags I knew I just had to have one, the looks were just awesome. I have to admit though that initially I was a little disappointed with the bikes performance. Having owned an XJ900 before I didn't relly feel that it was that much quicker. This was resolved a year or two later after reading a road test on a PDQ tuned bike, I discovered how easy it was to liberate the engines true potential & set about the task! The bike now has a very healthy 120BHP & 87LBft of torque with a real kick in the pants at 6000rpm, sorted!! I've tried other bikes over the years with a view to selling the XJR and going 'modern' but nothing quite does it for me. Had a Blackbird, that was great, very quick & handled superbly but nowhere near as comfy as the XJR & quite honestly was too bland. Have also had 2 FJR1300's again superb bikes but too big & heavy, no more comfortable, not as quick nor does it handle as well as my 'sorted' XJR!! So here we are, 11 years down the road & she still gives me great pleasure to ride & draws admiring looks where ever I park her, It's a proper motorbike!! Review Just back into biking. Last bike, was a Z1300. I have the XJR1200 import. The best one to have, with the cutdown seat, and brembo's, but no body seems to realise or mention the larger than standard discs. Andy. Review Lovely bike that really grows on you, that can tackle anything except off-road really well - will pull from 30mph in top gear without snatching or complaining - even 2-up. Learn to ride it and respect the weight, and its very satisfying to hustle - it's a easy bike to handle at normal speeds, but demands attention and input if you want to really push it - but that's what makes it involving and fun to ride. It's more than fast enough for road work - not much will come past a well-ridden one (with fork upgrade), whatever it is in the real world. Simple to work on, including the valve clearances, clutch, carb balancing etc. You can drop the entire exhaust system off for cleaning and painting the collector box in 20 min. A screen will make high speed cruising no problem for touring, and Scorpion end cans make it sound wonderful! Most people who ride sports bikes would get on with one of these if only they could get over their misconceptions that only sports bikes can be fun. I keep looking, but can't find anything I'd rather have. If you can only afford one bike, and want it to do it all well, then an XJR1300 is well worth a look. Good Points Torque, spread of power, comfort, style, presence, performance, practicality, fun-factor, stability. Great all-rounder - can scratch, tour, carry loads, super-comfy for passengers, but looks like a proper bike. Easy to ride anywhere, great in town but can wheelie like a mad thing if you want to and learn how. A bike thats dismissed as a retro by the comics. Better ride at a much better price than say a BMW R1200GS that comics rave about. Tank range - 180 miles is easily attainable when touring - even loaded. Worlds best mirrors - wide, clear at all speeds (except tick-over when it doesn't matter). Bad Points Finish is iffy - lacquer especially. Actual structure - engine & cycle parts are built like a tank though. Front forks are worst bit - undersprung and underdamped, they are the limiting factor for handling and braking - a fork re-valve etc. transforms the front end and lets it handle and brake much better. Review in my opinion, the best looking retro of them all, even better as an import as you get brembo's and ohlins, and a cutaway seat. lots of torque, good handling for a big bike, great two's up, great fun on a sunday afternoon. high 30s to low 40s mpg. very easy to live with. oh...and have ya self a good laugh as you pass gsx1400 owners trying to get around a corner with a hinge in the middle of their bike! Review Owned my XJR for nearly a year, and very very pleased with it. Despite the weight, it’s easy to ride and the massive torque of the engine means that power is always available in any gear. The front forks are incredibly soft, but this is easily sorted by getting a £60 set of springs and oil from Hagon. Excellent owners club - www.yamahaxjrownersclub.com - where there are many friendly experts to help you out, especially with tried and tested modifications (e.g. derestricted inlet rubbers) and also recommended tyres, etc. The brakes are already good, but can be improved further with braided hoses. The bike is comfortable over long distances, although a small screen may be required for motorway work - it makes a lot of difference. I get about 42mpg which isn’t bad considering the size of the motor and the aerodynamics. In summary, highly recommended – and don’t forget to check out the owners club.
