Aprilia Pegaso
650cc
Sept '00 (X)
Overall Rating:
Review
Great all around bike with a good amount of poke. Definitely one of the better handling bikes I have ridden. Head gasket failed early on, 4 gaskets later still waiting for the "next time". Fit and finish is good, better then a Suzi, but not as good as a Honda. WTF is up with the rear suspension? You have to remove the shock to get at the preload? uhhh No wonder Aprilia make a remote adj. unit as an aftermarket part

Great bike. Replaced front brake caliper w/ Billet 6-pot - incredible difference but now slightly overwhelms forks and lifts back wheel ;) Fitted Renthals w/ Acerbis handguards - original bars were crap. Needs more care than Jap bike - can get cosmetically scruffy v.quickly. Rear shock only lasted 10K (km!) and then blew, but got it rebuilt. Fitted spotlights to improve lights (esp. for light adventure riding) - Touratech stuff is very nice but v.expensive. Have 1 pr Metzeler Enduro 3 Saharas 4 off-road, 1 pr Tourance for general. Do NOT believe BMW hype - the early Pegs have 5-valve rotax lump and is much better than early F650's, which have 4-valve. I have ridden both back-to-back. Got bike cheap, runs perfectly even w/2 on board, great in city or on country rodas and trails. Motorways can be a drag, so GO THE LONG WAY ROUND AND HAVE FUN! (They seem to survive low-speed spills well, and indicators are cheap (

Fast enough, 110mph, Brilliant Handling Tyres:- Michellin T66x are superb. Some problems with head gasket until harder/new studs replaced on head. Build quality is reasonable, however exhausts rust V. quickly & swinging arm needs regular cleaning to stop rust. I have had this bike from new, done 12000 miles including a trip to Italy from Ireland. I would strongly recommend it for fun & all round practicality. Get Arrow Stainless exhaust, I think it is the only aftermarket other than getting one fabricated. Givi topbox makes it even more useful & can be removed when not required. Other than the above it's V comfy, easy to service, reliable if looked after. Fork seals can blow in under 10000miles or less if abused. I would buy another one

Got a lend of Aprilias own demo bike for an open weekend and what a tool. Looks like something out of mad max with the rocket launchers removed. Even on paper before I saw it I was keen. The stonking RSV motor in a traillie style machine; how mad are those foreigners.. Aamazing handling for this style of bike and it can get very far over, way further than your average joe can get on his vtfrsp hondukiha. Both footpegs touched down even two up whilst undertaking the power ranger on his blade, although you have to wind up the preload to the hilt if two up. I am canny heavy but easily done with the very useful adjusting knob type thingy then it firms right up letting you go even further. Brakes are more than ample but again with big v twins you have stacks of engine braking so most of the time not needed. Suspension very good and not too bouncy; didn't even get too upset on fast bumpy b roads, single or two up. Pulls stonking wheelies due to loads of grunt from the big mille motor but a bit tricky to see where your going once its up due to the size of the huge top fairing. Hence good wind protection loads of room for both passengers and very comfortable for long road trips although fuel consumption will decide on distance. It can be heavy if pushed and dont think of trying it off road because it may have off road style tyres but its one hell of a chunk to pick up when you fall off in the mud and you will!!! It's too big for off road just enjoy it where it belongs on the road. Only down side is we seem to veer away from this style of bike in blighty not just the Aprilia but the Honda Varadeo being very similar never set the sales charts on fire even though they are very popular with our neighbours across the channel; maybe they know something we dont ?? So in this respect you will stuggle to pick and choose in the secondhand market. I guess anyone whos bought one might just hang on to it a bit longer than the average plastic rocket.

They're stylish, comfy, fun, vibey, economical, and with the Arrow can have some oomph. Metzelers for the road, Trellborg for the rough stuff. GIVI Box a definate advantage, fork seals can blow unexpectedly (first sign is a very oily boot!) and rear shock doesn't stand much abuse, but a (better) rebuid for the rear is only about

Great little bike. Even when restricted to 33hp. A couple of reliablity problems (head gasket) parts take for ever to arrive. Good handling sounds nice too. Exhaust rusts v.quickly, looking at replacing with Arrow pipes.

The RS is king. There is no bike 125 or under which will beat mine and all the GPR'S are slow It's had 100c.c bore, full Arrows carbon fibre can and racing front one as well. 21 mm carb, racing air filter polished head and piston, De-restricted revs modified reed block, motorcross reed valves, modified manifold in house, hot spark plug, plus more. So deb people stop saying my one can kill your RS because we all know Aprilia RS are quicker, they sound better, corner better stop better, and so on. I know this because I race the Aprilia RS125 and we are winning by far. So keep buying and tuning and beating GPRs.

Jus don't understand why.. but luckily not many ppl know... mine jus can't go past the 120km/h mark... think must be my government who super restricted the bike... can someone kind enough to e-mail me how to de-restrict the sleeping moster... anyway I'm a hardcore DIY... so if possible can give me in details about how to do it...thanx

Excellent commuter and very easy to move through traffic. Not so good above 70mph. Main compaint is the awful after sales service from Aprilia. Would not buy another of their bikes for this. (Also very poor second hand parts availabilty)
