Definately a good commuting workhorse / touring bike, but not at all sporty. Done 8000 miles since last feb on the RS & the main points I have are...

Cheap to run - 120 miles generally costs about £11,
Fast in a straight line, loads of usable torque
Good Brakes
Very soft / spongey / unpredictable ride, though a replacement koni rear shock helped this loads on mine
Very round, thin rear tyre doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the corners.
Heavy & big.
good weather protection.
reliable.

So overall, very useable & good for long trips but not much fun in corners.

I have a K100RT 1986. This is my almost perfect bike, unlike previous japanese bikes, this bike makes mechanical sense to me, I feel confident to pull it apart myself and no hassle getting the weidest parts for this 20+yr old bike.

It is almost perfect because the normal speed handling could be better, some BMW parts can be expensive, high speed 100mph+ is not desirable particularly with luggage. Would prefer a bigger tank.

It is great two up very comfortable, great weather protection and really eats up the miles. Still has enough performance for a bit of messing about, but really is not in the same class as a sportbike (RS is meant to be better). Like other have said, short legged rider (<28cm) will find it too tall and heavy.

It is a good solid reliable bike that you are meant to go riding on, which is what owning a bike is about to me.

i have a k100RT, i did a lot of touring abroad on my norton dominator, but found it hard work. i didn't want a jap bike, so when the beemer was advertised i bought it. i new nothing about them. at first i found it very heavy, it still is. and the front brake too good. i came off it a few times cos i locked the wheel up. but its a great touring bike. theres 180000 on the clock and still going strong. iv had it 13 years and all i have done is put a new starter motor on, a new rear shocker, and tyres. john halford

My bike is a 1990 k100 lt bmw
She has 50000 miles , with me doing the last 6000.
The previous 2 owners had her serviced at BMW, so I bought her with confidence...
This the first k series bike I have owned, I always wanted to try one, and this bike has turned out to be a good one.
I have read reports of excessive vibes, buzzes etc.
My machine does buzz, especially through the gears, but when cruising, she is nice and smooth. Sometimes at around sixty in top, at around 4000,she can get a bit buzzy, but by rolling off the gas a liitle, without reducing speed, it goes away.
At higher cruising speeds, she is dead smooth, I recently rode to Lake Geneva and back over a weekend, and she was a joy to ride.
She has a big comfy seat which helped
She is very heavy, especially at low speed turns, but handling is generally fair for such a heavy bike.
You soon get used to the strange signalling and cancelling system that BMW favour.
The LT fairing and panniers help with touring, as do the heated grips.
Fuel consumption is quite good, I spent most of recent trip at 90 or more, and still got to 120 miles before refuelling.
She is fairly boring I guess, but if you have a long trip ahead, this is a machine to consider.
The brakes are rubbish though, something I need to improve, probably with k1100 calipers and discs, and master cyclinders.
The fork travel is excessive though comfortable, but definately not sporty. Buy a different bike for that type of riding.
Maintenance is okay for most of the stuff, I did get Vines of guildford to do the rear drive spline lube service.
Summimg up, a bike that will get you anywhere want to, may not be the fastest, coolest , or the best looking bike, but if you had to travel a long way, and the weather looks grim, then you might wish you had one of these.

Fire engine red, bloody heavy (bloody TOP heavy!), dropped three times at walking speed. Stacks of power but centre-of-gravity too high. Didn't suit my short legs. Superb engine but frequent problems with electrics. Still, a pretty good bike.

I bought the Beemer cheap from a bloke on e-bay, roadworthy, MOT'd (thats inspected for roadyworthyness for you Yanks) and ready to go. I needed a bike to commute from Bristol to Yorkshire and back every week and beat the traffic. The K100 is the master at this a big fairing keeps me dry and prevents the 90 mph wind from sapping my resolve and the momentum the thing has just keeps it going. Its reliable, predictable and very very economical for a 1000cc 520lb lump of metal I can do the whole journey without refueling. It will cruise at 100mph and I swear my pipe still remains lit at these speeds behind the fairing. Its not a sports bike NO! so if you want to scratch round country roads then buy an R1 if you want to eat road the K100 was way ahead of its time. A motorcycle that does over 100,000miles plus on one engine and there are still loads of 20+year old bikes around to prove my point, so the defence rests. Its a tourer and you need to be over 5' 8" and 180lbs...... its a mans bike!!

Got my bike from Pickerings in Townsville North Queensland. 4 speedo repairs in as many weeks was a bad start , but they came and collected the bike promising the fault was in the unit itself. HOWEVER bike goes well and with only 28,000K on the clock its a good looking unit. Previous bike was a Harley ,,, so its nice to own a bike that does not drip oil, have things fall off and find that 80% of the bikes bits are stamped Made in Taiwan. Its early days yet but it sure is a great looking sucker.

I'VE READ WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE SAID & ONLY STEVE UK WAS CLOSE. THE WORDS OUT OF DATE ARE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH... ITS PAST IT. IN ITS DAY ALL THE JAP BIKES WERE BETTER & STILL ARE, ITS WELL OVER WEIGHT, TOO LONG, TOO TOP HEAVY, THE BARS ARE NEXT TO HOPELESS. BMW IN THEIR OWN WISDOM MADE IT SO ONLY THEIR H/BARS FIT! WHY? THE MIRRORS ARE A WASTE OF TIME UNLESS YOU LIKE LOOKING AT YOUR HANDS,YOU CANT CHANGE DIRECTION TO WHERE YOU WANT TO GO....ALL ITS GOOD FOR IS LEANING AGAINST A WALL LEAVING THERE UNTIL YOU ARE SO DESPERATE FOR TRANSPORT THAT YOU WILL RIDE ANYTHING & YOU KNOW IT WILL START & GO THATS WHAT IT DOES BEST..., BUT WHEN YOU GET OFF IT THATS ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS LEAN IT AGAINST THAT WALL AGAIN WHILE YOUR BRAIN THINKS OF ALL THE BIKES YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT GO THROUGH YOUR MIND!! IF ITS BEING GIVEN AWAY HAVE IT...BUT IF SOMEBODY WANTS MONEY FOR IT....DONT GIVE THEM ANY. BUY A TRAIN TICKET & A BIKE MAG. HANDLING... IT DOSNT PERIOD & IVE TRIED. WHEN I GOT IT; DANGEROUS. WHEN I'D SPENT MONEY ON IT, A GREASED PIG ON ICE TRYING TO BUCK LIKE A RODEO HORSE WITH A NOSE FULL OF ANGRY WASPS. I'VE RIDDEN SOME BAD HANDLING BIKES IN MY TIME & THIS IS IN THE TOP 5. IM GLAD ITS DISCONTINUED BECAUSE BMW HAVE NOW MADE QUANTAM LEAPS FORWARD. WALK AWAY FROM IT LIKE YOU WOULD A BAD SMELL & SAVE UP YOUR MONEY IT WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A FACE LIKE YOU'VE BEEN LICKING PISS OFF A STINGING NETTLE & IM BEING KIND TO IT HERE.

Bog standard but with screen, bars, panniers and lights this bike was bought used, for what it was/is, not how it performs. It has been the best all round tourer I've used in 45 years biking which has included being an advanced instructor, national courier work, basic touring and just fun. Totally reliable with a regular 47mpg it has also been all over Europe and Scandinavia. Alongside, I've had old boxers, new boxers and Jap bikes but always return to old faithful.
