NEW MOTORBIKE REVIEW - BMW R1200S - BOXER BEAT
* What’s It all About?
If, like me, you find the concept of a sexy looking BMW motorbike difficult to get to grips with, wait until you clap eyes on the BMW R1200S. With its high tail, beautifully finished trellis frame and twin-cylinder engine it’s more reminiscent of staple Ducati fare than something that instead hails from Bavaria and it comes with the added bonus of German reliability. It’s essentially a development of the BMW R1100S that has been with us since 1998 but it boasts a 122bhp engine that BMW claim is the “most powerful production Boxer the world has ever seen.” For the less technically minded, the Boxer engine layout refers to the two horizontally opposed cylinders punching together like a boxer’s fists.
BMW are aiming to tempt riders away from Japanese and Italian supersports bikes, targeting those who may have grown out of a riding position more suited to a twelve year old than a grown up but who, nevertheless, don’t want to go short on style and capability.
* What Does It Cost?
There’s a price to be paid for all that quality and engineering and the BMW will doubtless remain a niche product with a premium asking price, albeit a very desirable one. Buyers of the BMW R1200S receive an electronic immobiliser, an 18 LED tail light and BMW’s maintenance free shaft drive with single sided swing arm and trick Telever front suspension all as standard. Factory options include anti lock brakes, an extra-wide rear wheel and fully adjustable Ohlins sports suspension if you’ve really got your game face on.
* How Does It Handle?
Despite offering way more power than the old BMW R1100S, the BMW R1200S lops a full 40 pounds off its predecessor’s weight figure. A lower centre of gravity and a redline that’s been teased out to 8,800rpm make this a far more exciting machine to ride.
There are still rather noticeable vibrations during wide-open cruising, but this is a bike that’s more of what the Yanks would term a ‘canyon carver’. Decent ground clearance is a big BMW R1200S feature and the front end has been modified to increase agility. The fork rake gets steepened to 24 degrees and the trail has been decreased from 100 to 87mm, thus giving a much dartier feel to the bars. BMW claim a top speed of over 200km/h (which is hardly surprising) and a 0-100km/h sprint of 3.15 seconds.
* Verdict
BMWs haven’t always been bikes you can lose your heart to. Here’s one that’s virtually irresistible.

HEAD FOR THE HORIZON - BMW R1200RT
* What’s It all About?
The latest BMW touring motorcycle to carry the ‘RT’ badge has everything you need to clock up some serious mileage. For years the ‘RT’ series has been the bike of choice for experienced long-distance riders and the BMW R1200RT is one of the most important models within this range. The 1,170cc Boxer engine represents a 15% increase in power on the previous model and you can feel it.
Thanks to a whole load of clever comfort features the BMW R1200RT will make disappearing into the sunset a breeze. You can load it up with practically anything you want and its engine will just keep on going for ever and ever and ever. The all-round feel of the bike gives the high levels of build and performance customers have come to expect from the Bavarian manufacturer.
* What Does It Cost?
As you’d expect from a machine that makes long-distance travel this comfortable and easy, it’s not cheap. You will have to part with an entry-level price of £10,895 to stick one of these in your garage. In addition, it’s a case of kid meeting candy store when you see the list of optional extras, so expect to pay even more.
Although it is generously laden with standard features like ABS, an adjustable driver’s seat, adjustable handbrake and clutch levers, an electrically adjustable windshield, an ample luggage rack, a diagnostic interface, an electronic immobilizer and a tool kit, it’s amongst the optional extras where that famous German engineering really becomes apparent.
Optional Electronic Suspension Adjustment allows you to balance those long-haul loads while heated grips, tyre pressure monitoring and an on-board computer feature amongst the most impressive extra gadgets. A further Comfort Kit can also be bought at a premium but judging by the comfort levels that exist with the standard fare, anything short of a 5* room in the Hilton will be uncalled for.
* How Does It Handle?
Whether you’re cruising towards the horizon or winding through mountains, the BMW R1200RT is amazingly easy to drive. The 110bhp flat twin engine always seems to have that extra available bit of torque when you need it and the bike has a low centre of gravity meaning you can effortlessly negotiate bends while the advanced chassis adds to its nimble feel. The comfort levels are through the roof thanks to the high-positioned riding position that ergonomically speaking it’s a dream come true. It also has the added extra of German reliability.
* Verdict
Simply put, if you’re planning on driving a long way on two wheels then the BMW R1200RT is probably the motorbike for you. It’s fast, powerful and will keep on going forever and ever. You can load the bike up and still the engine gives more when you need it. Yes it costs a lot, but the joy of driving it and the peace of mind you get with a BMW might just outweigh the cost.

GO THE DISTANCE:BMW R1200GS
* What’s It all About?
The R1200GS is an integral part of BMW’s off-road GS series. It is a versatile motorbike that is equally as proficient on the racetrack as it is on an epic voyage around the globe. The 1,170cc Boxer engine provides flexible, punchy power that, alongside the bike’s excellent comfort and off-road ability, places this vehicle in the higher echelons of the current motorcycle market. It also comes with the added bonus of German reliability.
The latest BMW R1200GS model is the lightest and most powerful of the GS range to date. BMW is aiming to tempt riders away from Japanese and Italian supersports bikes, targeting those who may have grown out of a riding position more suited to a twelve year old than a grown up but who, nevertheless, don’t want to go short on style and capability.
* What Does It Cost?
There is a price to be paid for all that quality and engineering that goes into a BMW R1200GS motorcycle and that price is £9,200. Although a more expensive prospect than some class-competitors, you can rest assured you are getting a solidly built and accomplished all-round motorbike for your money.
Buyers receive an ignition-based immobiliser and a height adjustable seat as standard with the BMW R1200GS but there is also a hefty list of factory options available at a premium. These include heated grips, ABS, luggage bag mounts and crash bars.
* How Does It Handle?
The chassis is superb and once you’ve gained confidence behind the wheel, the BMW R1200GS can be leant and leant and leant. The twin cylinder engine now revs up more easily then the previous model with the red zone set at 8,000rpm, making this an exciting bike to drive. The engine in the BMW R1200GS has been modified from the previous model to give 5bhp more and you can feel this in the acceleration and hear it in the engine tone. The seating position is high with a low centre of gravity, giving the driver agility and panoramic vision when negotiating tricky terrain. The servo assisted brakes and ABS help bring the BMW R1200GS to a stop with ease and the dual-purpose tyres cannot be faulted.
* Verdict
The BMW R1200GS is a motorbike worthy of the Bavarian manufacturer’s reputation. It is a model that exudes class and can flawlessly transform from an agile race bike into a comfortable long-distance cruiser. The engine is an obvious improvement on the previous model giving the driver a lively and energetic ride and you would be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable two-wheeler for a long journey.
At £9,200 the BMW R1200GS represents a substantial investment but if you’re planning a long journey, can you put a price on reliability and comfort? Another important factor to consider is BMW motorbikes maintain a very high value on the second-hand market.

insidebikes.com editor, Alastair Walker spent a day riding the standard 2008 R1200GS and 2008 R1200GS Adventure model.
IN SEARCH OF PERFECTION
Last year BMW sold over 2200 GS models in the UK, making it the most popular big motorcycle, outselling every sportbike on the market.
Part of that success was down to Ewan and Charley showing us what a great, life-affirming experience motorcycle touring can be, on prime time BBC TV. But there's no denying that the GS is a very accomplished motorcycle. In fact I rode the `old' R1200 GS just before hopping onto the latest 2008 model for an instant reminder of how good it still is.
But time marches on and the new 2008 GS is a hi-tech showcase, featuring ESA, ABS braking, different seat heights, spotlights, ASC traction control and possibly a solar-powered teasmade too. OK, I was joking about the teasmade but the ESA is a great bit of kit. Basically this allows the rider to choose the ride height of the bike - perfect if you are planning some off-road biking, plus adjust the suspension rebound settings, three ways, whilst on the move.
There are some 18 combinations to select overall, so if you think you're approaching some pothole-strewn urban jungle, switch into comfort mode and the supsension gets decidedly softer. Nice...and your pillion passenger will love that touch of luxury too.
I rode the Narnia-like hills around Peckforton in Cheshire on the `regular' GS and the new Adventure and both demonstrated the extra torque the new engine has over the old model, which made overtaking, even in top gear, a piece of cake.
It was also good to know that if I did accelerate hard on the freezing roads away from a junction, the traction control would cut-in to stop the tyres sliding in a tricky situation. The more I rode the bike, the more impressed I was with the Metzeler tyres' grip and the Adventure's handling in near freezing conditions - no scary moments at all.
Both the standard R1200GS and the Adventure are confidence-inspiring and very comfortable bikes to ride. New handlebars and a bigger screen offer a slightly improved riding position, although the old model was very good.
There are styling tweaks to the bike's bodywork and the bike's alternator has more capacity now to cater for the extra electronic gadgets which may be fitted.
There's also an impressive range of seat heights on offer, especially with the ESA equipped models. Luggage, heated grips, spotlights, light-guards, sat-nav etc is also in the accessory catalogue.
I couldn't get over simply parking the bike up, pushing a button or two and watching the bike slowly rise up, Thunderbirds style, into its `off-road mode.' Great fun and it made me want to head for the sunshine in Morocco, which this bike could definitely handle. Both the standard GS and the Adventure returned about 45mpg by the way, so you can commute the Long Way Round if you feel like it.
The only downside with the GS is that it costs from £9100 to around £12,600 depending on the model and the accessories spec. That said, depreciation isn't so bad on the GS as it can be on rival machines, like say the Varadero 1000 or V-Strom, especially if the mileage is high. New rivals like the KTM Adventure 990 and Guzzi Stelvio however might be competitive in both price and riding ability - time will tell.
Is it the perfect adventure touring bike? Can't say for certain as I haven't ridden the big KTM 990, or the Guzzi Stelvio yet, but there's no doubt in my mind that BMW keep adding tweaks which make the big GS a better `real world' motorbike. It has a destinct road `presence' for sure and it is surprisingly easy to ride, for such a huge bike. It's probably still the King, but the competition is definitely hotting up.
Thanks to Williams BMW, Old Trafford, Manchester for the loan of the GS and the Adventure models. More at

Once I got rid of the diabolical factory rear-shock, and replaced it with an Ohlins, it transformed the ride into a silky smooth swish which tempts me to corner low. The rear indicator stalks are crap too - this is a long wheel-base and the back end is some way from the suspension so there is a lot of vibration for the stalks to deal with, which tends to break them. Great bike though, I love riding it, but change the rear shock before your back gives out!

Bought as cruiser because of new knees restricting leg movement. I've the found ally finish is appalling and built for flash rather than practical biking. Feels better without standard top box, and although heavy on the front end 'cos of handlebar fairing, feels and sounds like a good Beema, returning 52+ to the gallon. Best road holding achieved with tyres at book pressure and soft setting on adjuster. Can scrape the floorboards!
Slow top speed of circa 100 hasn't been a problem even on a trip into Germany, and although a quoted seemingly slow time to 60mph, you wouldn't know it as it still gets off the mark ok. Lights are superb.
A big problem is the integral servo brakes, as, if on a loose downhill surface, ie in the Scottish islands, applying brakes causes the front wheel to lock - despite ABS. Wish it could be turned off on demand.
So, it is a good comfortable bike of cruiser ilk, with few vices and gets a lot of looks.

The British weather just eats the chrome. Poor finish from BMW especilally on the early models. Great fun to ride though. Mine's got the Hookijac level 2 exhaust and sound fierce -,just what youd expect from this bike. It handles well and does 90-95 city miles per tank to hit reserve, 170 -180 on the motorway. If your going to do lots of touring I'd get a screen. It's a midlife crisis bike for those of us who cant afford Harleys!!!

Can't believe what people have written about the cruiser. Mine is a totally unreliable bike with poor suspension, diabolical petrol consumption (23 mpg) and expensive servicing costs. Seat may be comfortable and I still think it's a nice looking bike, but I regret buying it.
