Review
Reviews on this bike always seem to be by people who have not done their homework before buying theirs. Like all bikes they have their known weaknesses, so dont moan about them when they happen to you, expect them to happen! So back to the review...

The Pegaso, to sum up my experience of over 10 000miles and a few bike strips and rebuilds, is one of the most sexy looking adventure tourers if bought in the two-tone colours (I say this because the newer green and blue ones dont float my boat), which goes like hell if you know how to ride hard.

The negative points are that they are not as economical as you would think, they can be tempramental especially if left in the rain not covered, If you live out in the sticks it may be hard to get parts.

To disagree with the common complaints of getting parts however, I would recommend buying a peg if you are keen on doing all the work yourself and if you are in relatively short distance of an Aprilia dealership in a first world country.
I have replaced a load of parts along the way and combining Ebay with my local dealership (and a BMW one once) I have never had to wait too long for a part.

Working on them is not as difficult as people say, just get the workshop manual and after taking it apart once it will be so much quicker the next time.

Right so to sum it up: go onto the Aprilia pegaso forum on Yahoo and check out the common problems, work out if they are things you would be happy sorting if they happened, then get your hard earned money together and purchase one of the most smile enducing bikes there is!
Lets remember that this is the same bike as the BMW F650 that used to be made by Aprilia with a few minor differences that was bought in truck loads by European consumers eager for the BMW badge.
Lets also remember that the BMW is two insurance catagories above the Pegaso, and is a watered down de-italianized version of a great Italian Adventure tourer!

So far it's been a lot of fun to own, but lucky I got it cheap (£900) so far I have replaced: Shock (Hagon - great shock!!), cans (Arrow - LOUD!), Swingarm, sprockets, chain, fork seals, fork springs (Hagon again - £55 bargain!) rear indicators, tyres.

Along with the cans, I installed an Iridium plug and K&N filter. This has transformed the engine! No more snatching, pulls cleanly from 2000RPM and right up to redline. New gearing has given it better on-motorway manners - you aren't having to thrash it doing 80+. Next will be a vario touring screen and probably a better set of hand protectors - the factory ones are like sails on a windy day :)

The only issue I am having is that as I don't ride every day, the battery needs to be kept in tip-top shape - you need to keep it charged or use a battery management device.

For a big trailie, it handles great, stops pretty damned good and is relaxing to ride.

I have the factory panniers and top-box but haven't fitted them yet, but next summer they will be getting plenty of use.

After around 45 or so motorcycles - everything from 500cc strokers to litre bikes, Guzzis, Dukes, Beemers, dirt bikes to sidecars, I'm very pleased.

Parts are a bit variable, but I have found Ebay and wreckers to be my best friends - especially Ebay Germany!

What can I say about this bike that's not already been said in so many bike mags. It's the all round achiever, getting ten out of ten for style, performance, comfort, servicing, practicality, touring ability, cheap insurance (only group 9) and of course THE FUN FACTOR!

If your looking for something to use (as you would a car) to commute to and from work - This is the bike. If you want something for a holiday (single or two-up) - This is the bike. If you want something to get down and dirty and have some fun with in the twisties - Yup, you guessed it - This is the bike.

Yes its a big bike, and for those used to their mini racers it might be a bit of a culture shock. But although its a big bike it has a low seat height (can go much higher) a firm but not harsh touring suspension, and for a touring bike its nice and light (around 160Kg, before you ad the top box, panniers, hot babe). It's got a very nice seating position, upright yet relaxed; unlike some.

The performance is helped greatly by its weight, letting you open up the throttle and get that lovely boost of acceleration as and when needed; no lag; no struggle; just smooth delivery of power. More than capable as a tourer, and if you want a bit of fun this bike will not disappoint; the words eager and perky spring to mind. It's no KTM Duke, but you didn't think it was (at least i hope not).

The look of the bike is not unfamiliar, probably as they come from the same factory / have some of the same designers as a few other bikes such as the much acclaimed BMW 650. The panels are good quality, the seat is ample without being bulky, th tank is big enough for touring but without the feeling your hauling a fuel tanker of petrol with you as you ride (as you can feel with the Paris / Dakar style tanks).

Maintenance ... the bane of our lives. Well no worries with this little beauty, everything is on hand, easy access, no special tools and i'd be very surprised if you couldn't handle it all yourself (which cuts down on those garage bills). I've heard the IE version (the injection model) can be more tricky to work on; possibly somebody with one could comment?

* My top tip would be not to bother wasting £20 on one of those printed manuals you get on the bike shops. Go online and get the very same thing on CD which you can print and zoom and makes notes on as and when you see fit (normally about 99p + postage.

All in all the Pegaso ticks all the right boxes; fast, comfy, capable, stylish and fun.

JP.

Good all-round bike that's fun to ride. Handling is surprisingly good. Not really suitable for high speed motorway trips (too much buffeting but a GIVI screen helps), best for flicking through the twisties on country lanes. No unreliability problems (yet).

Great all around bike with a good amount of poke. Definitely one of the better handling bikes I have ridden. Head gasket failed early on, 4 gaskets later still waiting for the "next time". Fit and finish is good, better then a Suzi, but not as good as a Honda. WTF is up with the rear suspension? You have to remove the shock to get at the preload? uhhh No wonder Aprilia make a remote adj. unit as an aftermarket part

Great bike. Replaced front brake caliper w/ Billet 6-pot - incredible difference but now slightly overwhelms forks and lifts back wheel ;) Fitted Renthals w/ Acerbis handguards - original bars were crap. Needs more care than Jap bike - can get cosmetically scruffy v.quickly. Rear shock only lasted 10K (km!) and then blew, but got it rebuilt. Fitted spotlights to improve lights (esp. for light adventure riding) - Touratech stuff is very nice but v.expensive. Have 1 pr Metzeler Enduro 3 Saharas 4 off-road, 1 pr Tourance for general. Do NOT believe BMW hype - the early Pegs have 5-valve rotax lump and is much better than early F650's, which have 4-valve. I have ridden both back-to-back. Got bike cheap, runs perfectly even w/2 on board, great in city or on country rodas and trails. Motorways can be a drag, so GO THE LONG WAY ROUND AND HAVE FUN! (They seem to survive low-speed spills well, and indicators are cheap (

Fast enough, 110mph, Brilliant Handling Tyres:- Michellin T66x are superb. Some problems with head gasket until harder/new studs replaced on head. Build quality is reasonable, however exhausts rust V. quickly & swinging arm needs regular cleaning to stop rust. I have had this bike from new, done 12000 miles including a trip to Italy from Ireland. I would strongly recommend it for fun & all round practicality. Get Arrow Stainless exhaust, I think it is the only aftermarket other than getting one fabricated. Givi topbox makes it even more useful & can be removed when not required. Other than the above it's V comfy, easy to service, reliable if looked after. Fork seals can blow in under 10000miles or less if abused. I would buy another one

They're stylish, comfy, fun, vibey, economical, and with the Arrow can have some oomph. Metzelers for the road, Trellborg for the rough stuff. GIVI Box a definate advantage, fork seals can blow unexpectedly (first sign is a very oily boot!) and rear shock doesn't stand much abuse, but a (better) rebuid for the rear is only about

Great little bike. Even when restricted to 33hp. A couple of reliablity problems (head gasket) parts take for ever to arrive. Good handling sounds nice too. Exhaust rusts v.quickly, looking at replacing with Arrow pipes.
