Aprilia RST Futura

Review
Now this is a seriously underestimated bike. When it was launched it was overpriced, had dubious styling & Aprilia had various woes that made them a less than secure choice, for many riders. Which is a shame, because Aprilia got it so right with this one.
Comfort;
Very comfortable (beats XJR for seat comfort), with a relatively short reach to the bars & the pegs only a little way back. The seat is to die for. 2 hours in the saddle is easy, you'd run out of fuel before it started to bother you.
Performance;
With about 113bhp from the 60º Rotax V twin, the rev counter never pauses from 2500 revs to the red line (10,500) in top. This would be about 155mph, plenty. The gearing is a little low, but that makes red light drags much more fun.
Handling;
Showa USDs up front & Sachs unit behind (with a remote pre-load adjuster). Get the suspension dialed in & it's excellant. Not up to a sports bike's speed & agility, but not too far off either.
Economy;
Not bad, I averaged about 43mpg over a year.
Braking;
Again. Decent & progressive from 4 pot Brembos. Usual caveat, use braided lines & it'll be sharp.
Down sides;
Like every vehicle there's something to moan about. On the Futura it's the charging circuit & a cheap fuel quick disconnect (QD). Aprilia skimmped on the wiring & one particular connector when creating this bike, that can reslut in a dead bike at the side of the road. BUT, it's an easy fix. The QD is made of a plastic that gets brittle with age & can break VERY easily. Again easy fix.
Up sides;
It's a very distinctive bike, which makes it a bit exotic & special, though that can polarise opinions.
The clocks are gorgeous, with blue back-lighting (with adjustable brightness) & various LCD pie-chart displays for; engine temp, fuel, ambient air temp along with the usual clock, odo etc. On a related note, I think the speedo is more accurate than most too (but that could be just my perception).
The screen is very good at protecting you, but there does tend to give fair bit of turbulance around the helmet.
Lastly, it's a hoot to ride! If you get one, you'll not be disappointed

Reviews on this bike always seem to be by people who have not done their homework before buying theirs. Like all bikes they have their known weaknesses, so dont moan about them when they happen to you, expect them to happen! So back to the review...
The Pegaso, to sum up my experience of over 10 000miles and a few bike strips and rebuilds, is one of the most sexy looking adventure tourers if bought in the two-tone colours (I say this because the newer green and blue ones dont float my boat), which goes like hell if you know how to ride hard.
The negative points are that they are not as economical as you would think, they can be tempramental especially if left in the rain not covered, If you live out in the sticks it may be hard to get parts.
To disagree with the common complaints of getting parts however, I would recommend buying a peg if you are keen on doing all the work yourself and if you are in relatively short distance of an Aprilia dealership in a first world country.
I have replaced a load of parts along the way and combining Ebay with my local dealership (and a BMW one once) I have never had to wait too long for a part.
Working on them is not as difficult as people say, just get the workshop manual and after taking it apart once it will be so much quicker the next time.
Right so to sum it up: go onto the Aprilia pegaso forum on Yahoo and check out the common problems, work out if they are things you would be happy sorting if they happened, then get your hard earned money together and purchase one of the most smile enducing bikes there is!
Lets remember that this is the same bike as the BMW F650 that used to be made by Aprilia with a few minor differences that was bought in truck loads by European consumers eager for the BMW badge.
Lets also remember that the BMW is two insurance catagories above the Pegaso, and is a watered down de-italianized version of a great Italian Adventure tourer!

As a commuter it was quick, noisy (so the car drivers can hear you weaving through the traffic) but was off the road for 3 months – yes 3 months waiting for an electrical pickup to arrive from Italy!!
Great on fuel, weather protection is good, handling is great - it can be thrown around like a rag doll!
Top end is reasonable for a 50cc, mine would go off the clock having done the rollers, re-jetted & put on a Technigas exhaust.
Acceleration is brisk but the roller/jet combo needs tweaking to get the best mix of top end speed and the traffic light GP sprint!
The other good thing about the SR50R was the head & tail lights are exactly the same as an RSV R and through the traffic its just a fast!!!!
For a 16 year old or a cost conscious commuter you cant get better!!

I have the 125 Chesterfeild version and wow what a bike fitted it with an Arrow exhaust & k&n air filter Runs well and quick Just warm it up before you ride it, clean out the rubbish from the engine occasionally and thrash it from time to time!
