Bought this in exchange for Africa Twin and man what a change. Holy shit the first day I headed down a windy safe road and let her over on the bends, it cornered on rails. Maybe all sports bikes are this good - I don't know. I got the red colour scheme as it didn't re sell with yellow so I'm lucky. The second trip I started and idled it for about a minute and the engine management light came on - Shit I thought, A phone call later The Ducati man assured me that the computer is very sensitive so no worries since. Just a painful grin every time I fire it up and hit the open road. Its amazing really. Like the Africa Twin took me and my wife all over Southern and Northern Europe and not a whistle out of it. I expect good use for fun as its only for 200 mile trips and the missus has to stretch. We're not 24 anymore. I agree with another dude who said its a future classic. Have to agree. Check the tail end even - Honda not in the same ball park. In fact all other bike design copy but fail to really impress. Don't buy a new one unless you got the dosh. And you'll have to run it in. Buy a pampered one and let her rip. Fox

Bought new, 3200 miles, ridden in storms and sun, never missed a beat. Pussy cat to ride until speed needed, and although 6'2" I don't find it too much of a pain in town for short periods. Build quality good to excellent, fuel con excellent in normal riding, likes a drink when hooning. Great power delivery from v twin, but watch your licence, it's that easy! If you're considering one, do it, look after it and you'll not want to part with it. First service at 12 months was

This is my first bike. I spent ages looking at all the Jap look alikes but the Duke stood out a mile. It has style, good handling, loads of grunt, torque and gives you massive smile factor every time you throw your leg over and go for a blast. OK, its not the fastest but when it looks/sounds as good as it does who cares. Plus, if you get one just see how hard it is to stop smiling when you tell a non believer you ride a Ducati !!!!!

Let's face it - arguably the greatest bike of all time. Stunning looks - sublime handling, and.............. THE NOISE!
The rumours are true though, pillions hate them, and keeping them servcied is essential. I havent found it particularly unreliable although have had reg/rec issues ( a known fault I believe!)) Get one if you can afford it - you WILL have fun!

I don't care what anyone says - I love it....OK so my wrists get a little sore, but I still think it's better than all the anonymous Japanese bikes out there. I use it for a daily 15 mile commute to and from the suburbs into the city of London each day, and for the occasional blast at weekends - and it's perfect for both. I have had the bike for a little over a year and 6000 miles now, and the only problem was a blown gasket, swiftly fixed under warranty. Still love it, but want a 749/999....maybe in a year or so

My return to biking after a break of around 10 years consisted of me walking through the village I live in and seeing a bike parked with a for sale sign on in the garden of a house.
This bike was a bright red Ducati 900 Superlight Desmodue Series 5 number 442 I think and I loved it because of the noise from the exhausts and the performance / handling of the air cooled twin. My wife said it sound like bolts being rattled in a biscuit tin........but of course this was because the Ducati uses a dry clutch insted of the wet clutch of most Japanese machines. I recall one outing on the Duke I ended up in the middle of a thunderstorm in the far North West of Scotland (Aultnacealach) in fact it was so bad I had to stop for a coffee at an Inn. After around half an hour the storm passed and I ventured out to the bike....Ducati have the reputation for not liking adverse weather...but this little Duke did me proud, and we roared off to Ullapool, then home on streaming wet roads with the engine never missing a beat. Great little bike, I would have another.

My first V twin. Has a lot of character and superb handling but lacks a bit of power. Brakes superb. Long distances a pain in the wrists but the seat is surprisingly comfy. Covered 8000miles with only one minor fault. Got to watch the electrics when washing and a good dose of WD40 goes a long way to maintaining the electics and finish. Does not suit the Scottish winter and hates salt. I prefer the looks of the H/F version but the engine gets really grubby. Fitted Bridgestone 020's and had a marked handling improvement. Cheap to buy (imported from germany in 200 for less than

Bought the Duke new in March 2000, had a few initial problems, notably the gearbox, tells you it's in neutral when it's not actually, caused some minor damage, which has now (eventually) been sorted by Ducati UK. Had to do plenty of reminding to get a suitable reply. The new Duke is a lot better than the old one, the quality of the finish is excellent, but the nuts, bolts etc still go off colour quite quickly. To ride the bike is very nimble, even thought there is not much power (62-65 bhp) it pulls out of bends very quickly and is very stable. When pushed hard on flat, smooth, twisty roads it excells in the grin factor stakes. The music the bike makes with standard cans on is a little dissapointing, but invest in some aftermarket cans and it transformes the bike and makes the most gorgeous noise when coming down hill and backing off the throttle, "oh so sweet", this is the music Ducati's are meant to make. After a long ride there is quite an ache in your wrists, and the thumb on your right hand may go a little numb, the seat is quite comfortable, but do more than 200 miles (320km, approx) and you will be very glad for a stop, to strech out and relax a while. Same goes for the pillion, although it is a lot more comfortable than other sports bike, so I've been reliably informed, with quite a wide well padded seat, both male (6ft) and females(5ft 7in and 4ft 11in) found it fine on regular rides out. The standard rubber is very good, and unless you are on a par with Foggy (or ride like you think you are him!!) then these are fine for most people. Overall the new Duke is a very solid package, it look's like nothing else on the road, and boy does it get the look's, very admired when parked up road side, and afterall that is one of the pleasures of owning a Ducati, ENVY. Now looking at trading up to a 748bp next year, but getting more attached to the 750SS every ride, so watch this space.

Love it heaps, never had any problems, 62000km and loves to rev. Could do with a few more ponies but sounds great with open can, and a good thrasher thats a bit different, people still dribble over it like it was a 998, and most days its more than enough fun. It all comes down to the pingers($)

This is my second 900ss. I had the last one for 2 years and sold it for a 1200 bandit. Had the bandit for a year and decided to get the 2002 900ss. Stunning colour scheme. The suspension has been improved and there is a lighter swingarm fitted. You can feel the difference on twisty roads. Its a good, strong, smooth motor and above all serious fun!! It comes into its own on open roads. Ducati got rid of the flip up stand and put a microswitch on it so you cannot run the bike on the sidestand. Bit of a ball-ache!! Thats my only niggle.
