My first bike and universally acknowledged by my friends to be a great choice. Easy to ride, great to look at, loads of torque and power at the bottom end, and it's cheap! I have the Dark model which means I lose a brake disc (not a problem, I have discovered) and have a plastic tank (which looks great, although you can't attach a magnetic tank bag to it) but it is

Fantastic entry level bike into the world of Ducati. Superb, handling, brakes, power delivery and looks. Could be a little easier going on the wrists though.

It was great apart from the oil leak onto the exhaust. Was initially restricted and really nice gentle introduction into big bikes. Post derestriction I thought that it was a bit much for a single disk and I'd just seen a 750SS. The rest is history. I'd have another one though!

Bought to replace a 600SS. Really a much better machine. Dunno why as most things appeared to be the same. Got bored with the performance after 18 months, had cans, jets & filter done and made it even better without sacrificing too much economy (gaining on motorway runs). May be going soon for a 748. Never had any trouble with it at all.

After riding a GPZ1000RX for the last 18 months and then jumping on to the 600ss, I straight away noticed the difference in horse power (about half) but the torque and handling are superb, and sitting on legal road limits you can have so much fun. The bike is such a head turner, and with a staintuned pipe sounds awsome. I have always wanted a Ducati but could never afford one, but this was well worth the investment, I could never go back to a jap four again.

What a great, manageable first bike! I knew all I wanted was a Duke, having been converted to bikes only last year. I passed my test 3 weeks ago and already I'm over 500 miles...not bad considering I only work 12 miles away and work 6 days a week! Steering, handling superb; very slight ache in mid-back after long journeys, but nothing major. First service (600m) should be around

Bellisima!! Since the first time I rode her it has been pure heaven. She turns when I think about it, stops shorter than possible, and absolutely kicks my a$$ whenever I try to find out how much power she has...incredible. Best bike ever (I've had 851's and a 900ss/sp and this is the one).

A great bike for trackdays on fast tracks. Just an emotional attachment you don't get with a Japanese bike. Great build quality but reliability is suspect. All part of the "fun". Battery drains on it's own (goes dead). Needs chip and cans along with lower gearing to really bring all out for use. Pure magic on rough fast sweepers!

Gearbox better than the 996. Motor only slightly down on torque. On a track you'd hardly notice. Not less than the 916/996 just different. Build quality good but reliability suspect.

Absolutely Shite. The fact that Ducati even developed (if thats what you want to call it) this 'thing' shows that even they too can make a real 'dud' (and thats an understatement!) Just like the Porsche 924, the 500 Sport Desmo should never have been released - a wopping great big smear on the reputation of the maker of some of the finest sports machines. Goes like Shite, handles like shite, doesn't stop real well either, ducati never released a workshop manual for the thing, and getting spare parts (here in oz) is like finding the old proverbial 'hens tooth'! If you want a cheap parallel twin go a CB400 or something like that because not only are there more of these around (more parts, not to mention workshop manual available, plus you can cary a pillion) the good old Jap certainly beats the Italian hands down when it comes to build quality, reliability, and 'value for money' (when your talking about bikes of this age group anyway).
