Gilera DNA 125cc Sept '02 (52)
Overall Rating:
Review
Brilliant bike, handles like a dream. Only limit is the pegs so I cant get my knee down all the way. Got mine in September 2002, running great, its my second because my first was stolen, I get great fuel economy from it and servicing is cheap. I have had 80 out of it, only problem is the exhaust rusting but im looking for a sports exhaust anyway, if anyone knows where I can get one from let me know, oh and I'm after a side stand as well if any one knows where I can find one.

Gilera Coguar 125cc Sept '00 (X)
Overall Rating:
Review
I bought a 2 1/2 year old Gilera Coguar for my girlfriend a couple of months ago, as her first bike after she passed her CBT. Firstly, I have to say that the chrome had suffered because of TOTAL neglect by the previous female owner, and her apathetic father. Otherwise, after a day of fettling, we now have the bargain bike of the year. It rides very well indeed, economy is outstanding, the engine (Honda OHC CityFly) is unburstable. Brakes are powerful for a small bike; and all those whinges about chains failing after 8000 miles... GET SOME CHAIN LUBE, DIMWITS! In any case, a new chain and sprocket set = 30 quid. Peanuts. Most 125 learner bikes are ridden by people with no mechanical knowledge, and expect everything to run on fresh air and no maintenance. Pathetic. Give this stylish bike the praise it deserves. This bike is a real head-turner, and is brilliant to ride. Any Italian machine is going to be a little short on finish, (especially chrome plating) so keep it clean, wax polished and all will be OK! I've ridden it many times, and it will do 65mph with me weighing nearly 100kg. Superb. Get a life, get a Coguar while they are cheap, and ENJOY! PS By the way, I also ride a Triumph Trident for touring, and commute using a Honda CG125 (which is gutless, styleless, nervous and has crap brakes compared to the Coguar)

Gilera DNA 50cc Sept '02 (52)

I had my DNA for a year. Quite good fun Pulling from the lights was quick, up to 50 was fast but then getting to 60-70 to forever. But had problems starting it when it was cold, problems with it cutting out when it was wet, front wheel always wanting to bury itself in the tarmac when braking, not being able to read the speedo or any other thing when they steamed up, radiator reservoir leaking all in the helmet bay. Apart from these minor faults it was ok. Oh yeah and remember to keep it chained up or fit an alarm, mine was stolen 2 weeks ago and wrecked so look after it. Some small faults but good fun

Had this bike for a month and had no problems with it, Had to ride it from where I bought it and having not ridden a motorbike for a while was a bit nervous.. but felt confident in riding the dna.. It handles like a proper bike without all the messing around with gears.. We are waiting for the shop to get another one in so we can both ride them.. This bike is the mutts nuts

As an update to my review on February 19 2003 I'm adding an extra star. Since the review I had a complete engine replacement due to the fact that the pistons slipped a cog and instead of them alternating into the chamber they were firing into the chamber simultaneously, smashing the whole top end of the bike to pieces. This was replaced under warranty though and everything's great. I'm actually really enjoying the bike now the weather is warming up and I've found a couple of places in the UK who do DNA 4-stroke performance parts so it's getting 3 stars now instead of 2.

Gilera Runner 175cc Sept '00 (X)
Overall Rating:
Review
So after my Typhoon went I got a Runner 180 (2 stroke). Its good for 90 and doesn't feel too slow on the motorway although you wouldn't want to do more than a couple of junctions with the engine buzzing like that. Upside down front forks died at 8k miles and had them replaced with right way up ones (at the suggestion of the shop). They are a little longer (or my centre stand got shorter) but handling feels the same. Used every day to commute for 2 years. Starts first time unless alarm has run battery down over a long weekend in which case first or second kick gets it going. Its comparable to 125 at communting speeds as the 125 is geared lower/ has more torque lower in rev range. 180 can sound a bit rough at 30mph but not being limited to 65 makes up for this. Screen does work well in the wet. Having no step through is a real pain when fetching takeaway! Be prepared to be overtaken dangerously as cars and 'proper bikes' don't want to be behind a scooter even if you're making good progress (70+) on A/B roads. They must be trying to make up for lacking in the trouser dept. One thing I did notice was that the headlight cut out on three occasions, 2 dusk and one dark. The latter was not nice as I was mid overtake at the time! Can't find any problems with electrics though! Great fun, good commuter,

Had from new since October 2002. 2 main problems in 2000 miles:<
><
>1. Serious rust damage to exhaust. Dealer admitted to me that Gilera's exhaust paint is crap. Had it repainted with several coats of decent stuff on the warranty. Looks a bit ropy due to the damage already being done. Get this done early to prevent this problem. <
><
>2. Switch in rear brake lever for brake light and ignition was corroded and needed replacing. Not covered by warranty. Spray with WD40 etc to prevent this.

The Gilera Runner SP50 is one of the best scoots out there. Mine is only a 50cc it did 45mph on the straights when I first got tune up and it will reach speeds of 80mph. It's a mad great bike. Gotta have one
