Gilera DNA 125cc Sept '01 (51)
Overall Rating:
Review
Had my DNA for a just over a month now, its a fantastic bike. I use it every day, and have put 800 miles on it already. Handles brilliantly, even in wet weather. The bike is riden on all different road surfaces, including cobbles (dont recommend doing this fast, eg 50+mph), excellent in traffic. Thie biggest limiting factor on the bikes handling is the rider and how far you are prepared to push it and lean over, this bike feels like it will keep leaning over further forever.< >< >The only problems I have had are a puncture (happens to all bikes), leaky valve and an air filter full of crap (british winter weather). Starts and runs well (especially with a clean air filter) in all weathers, even rain.< >< >The bike is kept outside and covered (most of the time), always starts in the morning even when below zero. Only rust is on the exhaust, where the paint has gone and the salt from the roads has been busy. No rust on any suspension parts or anywhere else on the bike.< >< >I've had it up to 72mph, I always get over 70mpg. Normally 77+mpg (worst has been 73mpg), most of my riding is on A roads at 60+ mph. Great bike for commuting and fun riding while learning. Very confidence inspiring bike. Cant wait for the summer to do more weekend riding. Would definitely buy one again, preferably with a bigger engine though.< >< >Only time the engine is lacking is on a high exposed A road, but I know bigger bikes (600's) run like a bag of nails on this road as well. Will beat most things at the lights, all thats beaten me is an SV650. Accerleration from 40 to 50-60 is amazing for such a small bike, very useful when commuting.< >< >Comfort is good on the bike even when riding all day (on and off, haven't had chance to do any really long rides yet). The small bikini style farings offer good weather protection even in heavy rain. Wind shelter is rather limited though as the screen is so tiny, no problem at the speeds this bike can do.

Had it about 9 months and up until recently loved it to pieces but it's starting to fall apart now!< >< >1. Rust forming on the exhaust, front forks, brake disks and a little on the dash even though it's covered 70% of the time.< >2. Springs on the rear suspension have faded to a shite pinky colour from ferrari red.< >3. Bike doesn't like the wet and refuses to start for a good 10 mins of trying usually.< >4. Drive belt snapped while on a bypass at 70mph and wrapped itself around the starter so had to push it home for 2 miles uphill.< >5. Upper Radiator piping behind the right footpeg is wearing away from my boot touching it when my feet are on the pegs - If it burst it would have dumped my radiator water and seized the whole engine while covering my foot in boiling water!!!< >6. Front end of the bike is extremely light and tends to slide a little whenever you're leaning into a turn (a tiny bit nerve-wracking).< >7. Dashboard is filled with condensation meaning the digital display isn't visible half the time!< >8. Numbers 4 and 5 above were done under warranty however my two local bike shops refused to do the warranty work because they're "fed up with cleaning up after Gilera" they "don't get paid enough for the amount of warranty stuff they do for Gilera".< >I give the bike 2 out of 5 because when it rides it's damn fun. WHEN... Nevermind, Direct Access is calling and there's a nice Ducati 620 Sport with my name on it...

Had a intermitent problem with the back brake switch used for brake light and start-up safety switch. Quite often wouldn't allow ignition with back brake lever held in. Now doesn't work at all and no brake light with rear brake only on so using front brake for starting. Think the switch is kapput. Maybe Italian bikes not built for UK winter commuting...

I got my Gilera DNA 2 weeks ago and already got 80mph out of it. The bike handles well around corners and has very good acceleration from a stop position. If you got the bike de-resticted then it would add a lot of speed to the bike and a lot more fun. I highly recommend this bike and is probably the best 125 out there at the moment.

Bought as a toy but now I don't want to part with it! Great for commuting in congested town centres, plenty of storage, uses hardly any fuel!

Bought for daughter at 16. Bike slow but a looker, handles well (like a real bike) though seating position a bit painful on the wrists after a few miles (like the R1!) and stops well. Good lights. Derestricted when daughter reached 17 (easy, cut off 'willy' on your exhaust and seal the hole and remove the plastic spacers fron the pulleys = 45mph. Bigger jets and new exhaust = even more mph!!) handles even better flat out, does excellent stoppies. No problems other than usual Italian problems i.e. electrics 'wash' all electrical connectors in WD40. Crappy plastic bulb holders crack (replaced under warrenty) looking forward to full deristriction (see http://www.taffspeed.co.uk/technic/dna.htm)

Worst pile of **** I've ever wasted money on!!! If you're thinking on buying a Gilera DNA... DONT! Get a Honda Varadero125 or NSR125 or a decent scooter... At least Hondas are reliable, unlike this pile of ***** I've had it just over a year now and had over 22 problems with it!! From HT leads snapping to fuel pumps siezing (twice) Has anyone had similar problems and if so what have you done about it? I've just sent Gilera/Piaggio a nasty email about all the problems I've been havin with it, and the current mis-firing problem I've got with it...

I had my Ice as a first bike and it is one of the fastest nippyest scooters on the road. One prob - it's a bit too tall apart form that GET ONE
