Honda CB 450cc 90/91 (H)
Overall Rating:
Review
The HONDA CB 450 DX,

Last of the Long Running “Super Dreams 250 &400 ” saw the Birth of the up rated 450 twin in of all places “Brazil”, a New Honda Factory was Built in the Jungle for this New (Old) bike in the late 80s. And it was available in Britain from 89 to 93 as the DX with the Odd American Imported Rebel & 450C appearing from time to time ( a Nice looking Custom).

Never Really Bought By the Speed Merchants , or Cruisers and too Big for the 125 market
This Bike pops up regularly in an around the sub £500 Bracket
or £600 with T & T to you mate ;) .
(I have seen the Odd one Derestricted for the New 2 year BHP Limit , easily done they say.)

Well What Can Be Said About a Very Average Motorcycle?
Perhaps the Best thing is That it is Average,
It’s a HONDA after all.
it do’s every thing it says on the Box !,It go’s it Stops & Starts with little Fuss or Problem.

It is Still Lighter enough to be Manhandled if Need be ,But Feels Heavier enough to be Firm.
The Frame was Made for the 400 , It was I believe the 250 Dreams that Suffered by having to logg around its mass by sharing the same frame ( Giving them a Bad Rep’ in there Day).
So the 450 has little Trouble & Pulls a “Bit” Quicker. Its aprox 48 bhp & a Oil Cooled Twin.

But its Not a Sports Bike,
Though its Small Cow Horn Bars and a Long Petrol Tank (On the DX) Put you in a Forward Sports Slouch.
It can Keep up easy enough with General Traffic & Can Out power the Average Car,
Delivery is Smooth and Feels faster than it is,
My example on what is Now a 18 year old Bike feels Very much Like the Universal Jap 4 Cylinder (Thanks to Mr Hondas Balance Shafts) very Smooth & Quite..

Zoom through the 6 Speed Box and you Can ,Keep up with Most Bikes not trying to lose you in Normal use, Probably Slows some what Before 80mph & has Seen the Ton (100) Once .
But in 6th Gear (Probably an Overdrive) it would easily Cruise at Any Speed up to the Legal Limit.

OK You Could Hammer it, Blast off, and Keep up & Beat on a Good Day a Sports Bike, With a Bit of Luck & a Timed Rider.. But (A) It would Not Last Long & (B) Not on mine you Dont !.

Right It’s a Twin ,That Feels More like a Four (To Me) Makes a Good Short Range Commuter with the ability for a Genital Week end Blast , For Me the Riding Position would Stop me from Touring to Far. But an Ex Sports Rider would find the Bars higher than the Norm.
While it is a Old Design, Any Faults have long since been Ironed Out.
And with the “Super Dream” Heritage they Should be Loads of Rusting Spares & add on’s out there in the second Hand & Junk Market .
New Bits are still available l inc cheap service bits Via the Web & old Honda Dealers.

Up to Now Mine has been Reliable , Seat Comfy , Tank Huge 17 ltr, Lights and indicators good. In fact all Equipment good it’s a Honda.
Bad Points, No Soul, No Posseabilty…its Just a Use full Bike at the Right Price..

Why they are a Few Cheap Ones Around is that the Born again Bikers Want the Sports Bike or Harley of there Choice and have the Money,
While the Poor Still favour the Mz, or Rat Chopper. Or any Scrapped Sports Bike… Which Leaves a Few Good & Cheap Very useful Bikes out there in the Old Middle Ground.

So there you Are, Would I swop mine Yes !, Would I Keep it Definitely its Useful & Cheap.
So: 45 MPG min…100 mph top.. 60/70 Cruise..48 Bhp..& Plenty of Parts Still….”Honda”

I love this bike. It is the perfect commuter bike, and has the power to carry my wife on the back too. It's nippy, sounds throaty, comfortable, and very reliable. I do 26 miles a day in London and the 80+mpg is a massive benefit. Very economical. If you have a restricted full license (25kw or 33bhp) then this is your absolute best choice for a motorbike, unless you put a restrictor on a big bike (which is expensive). You won't regret getting on of these.

Aparently these bikes are very good. If you do want a 250 superdream, ask many questions. Otherwise you could have one like my old one.

First the good.

They are dirt cheap to buy.

Now for the Bad.

Depending how well they have been maintained anything can and maybe will go wrong.

My old one had slightly bent forks so more strain was on one arm than the other.

The carbs were out of balance severely. 70 MPH was just achievable so overtaking trucks was HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

Finally this one Guzzled oil like a 2 stroke.
The engine finally siezed on the M20 3 miles before the Ashford turn off.

The tank is very long so prepare to stoop over. The seat kinda compensates.

Overall this is a superdream with little dream appeal, choose wrong and it will be a super nightmare.

Why oh why have Honda stopped making CB500s! In my opinion, this is the best all-round bike you can lay your hands on.

What do you want your bike to do? Commute? Perfect - narrow and light, nice flat bars allow easy maneouvring, outruns any car from the lights with ease, and still returns 50-60mpg. Trackdays? Oh yes - CB500s even have their own race series, Ron Haslam uses them at his race school at Donnington, and most riders will find their limits long before the bike's. Weekend blasts? You betcha. A good rider will keep up with many a supersports on the twisties on the CB500 - great fun for you, and a serious embarassment for them! :-) Touring? Crank up the preload, strap on a wingrack, and away you go, with a 200+ mile tank range and a relaxed riding position to help you eat up the miles. Pillion? Plenty of room, decent seat and sensible pillion pegs that don't put you in a knee-breaking crouch. A good grab-handle too.

The bike can be restricted for beginners, and is very forgiving if ridden quietly; but buzz an unrestricted machine into its 7-9k zone and it flies along, accelerating hard and reaching well over the ton in no time. Drop it and it's hardy - very little to break easily, and if it does, replacement parts are cheap. The engines are bulletproof and if properly maintained will easily run to 100k with little more likely to go wrong than the camchain tensioner giving out - a £40 replacement (why do you think there are so many despatch riders using them!). There's a big, active and helpful owners' club too, with massive communal expertise ann a really helpful outlook. Post a problem and several locals will be round to help you sort it out in no time. How many other bike groups are like that?

It's cheap to buy, dirt cheap to run, incredibly reliable, easy to work on, and really a no-brainer choice for an allrounder which can do the work but still be fun. Many people think of them as cheap winter hacks but they can do this and SO much more. And some of them even look really sexy - check out one of the black half-faired "S" models with gold wheels - yummy :-)

In summary it's a bike with enough power that you can really use it all in the real world, a chassis that's simple but effective, a budget bike in price but not in performance. Thre is no other bike which delivers half as much for so little money, not to mention in so many areas. .

Buy one - you won't regret it!

Honda CB125
I bought this bike (1988 CB125TDJ) with 28k miles on the clock in December 2007, this bike was a "temporary" thing for me as I am 17 and looking for my bike test yet.
Seven-eight months later I find myself with a full year's MOT, which brings me onto reliability.
So far so good, its now up to 35 thousand miles and the main thing that has gone wrong was a cracked piston, which is just as well because we found a poorly bodged internal bearing.
The recess for the circlip to hold on the rear sprocket mysteriously wore away so I replaced the back wheel.
Very cheap parts for this bike, relativly easy to work on as all the nuts and bolts work.
I did the fork seals but following a Haynes manual, it was very easy to do.
The bike is surprisingly comfy hauling my near 15 stone 6ft frame around, so undoubtedly I have no option but to take advantage of the 12000rpm redline,(have seen 13k), the bike will sit comfertably on the road at about 55-60mph I saw 80 once on a very steep hill further north in Scotland.
I find the handling very predictable and sedate. Try if you want but it's hard to upset this bike.

There is a problem with ground clearance i've tried hanging of MotoGPgp style but it still scrapes whats left of the worn pegs and centre stand.
To give you an idea what this bike can do - I go along comfortably with an RS125 when the road gets rough(real) the CB does fine, the front can wonder a bit in the corners, it's averaging 65mpg with my enthuseastic riding, around 85mpg in the snow. This bike having a longer wheelbase is very good on slippery terrain but its handy to lean offroad skils before you find this out(CR250).

The brakes are poor, double the breaking by putting your feet down but they pass an MOT and you dont really need them often anyway(braided hoses) (Racing pads).
The looks and dream appeal are low for most but I think it looks nice enough. I never go cruising around town anyway, I go for longer runs down backroads.
To sum up this bike, its like a fat girlfriend, great fun to ride but embarrasing to show to your friends
