All Honda NX Reviews
Honda NX 650cc 91/92 (J)
Overall Rating:
Review
This is a bike for born again bikers who want to do a bit of trail work or just potter the 'B' roads. The reliability is well - Honda.

Average maintenance will ensure high mileage and everything is well built. Some people have experienced steering bearing problems supposedly from the fact the oil lies in the frame and the heat transmits to the bearings but I have never had any problems in many years of riding.

Expect 50-55mpg even when giving it an occasional handful. The riding position is very comfortable but high so this is not a bike for anyone under 5ft 10” or so; but it does give you a view over the car roofs which makes you feel pretty safe as you can see what’s going on ahead.

For a big single the mirrors are good as vibration is not too much of a problem. It is not an outright off-road bike as it is too heavy for that but with a good pair of grippy tyres it will still give you some real fun on the rough stuff and feel safe doing it.

Brakes are very adequate without being vicious so are reassuring. Being a big, simple, air cooled motor there is no radiator to break, water pipes to burst etc. It wants you to stay on and play unlike some off-roaders which seem to want to spit you off given half a chance.

On the road it will pull 100mph but with the high riding position you will be taking all that wind on you so 60 to 70mph is a more realistic journey speed. Motorways are no fun as everyone and their mother will be overtaking you in their Nissan Micra’s but on a rural road on a sunny day it is the business.

Some people have done long journeys around the world on the NX650 but I think there are other bikes I would choose unless you really like to potter about. First gear is unnecessary on road work one up and the noise is just lovely on the standard pipe. Put a pillion on and you hardly notice the difference as there is oodles of torque.

Although getting long in the tooth now this is a bike that you should have alongside your sports bike in the garage so you can choose according to your mood.
