Honda ST Pan European

I see that Panamaniac1 is now doing his own servicing. Excellent decision! I think the full service on mine cost me between £50 and £60 for materials. Every 4K that's not so bad. Plus you know it's been done right, not bodged by some bored underpaid mechanic at a main dealer. Simple fact is, if I had to pay for someone else to service my bikes, I couldn't afford to run them.

An update to the earlier review by Black Dog. I have commuted the bike for a week or two and done a full service since the last review. Commuting - not the ideal tool for this, as the bike is just so heavy (both at home and at the work end there are slippery and uneven surfaces, and I'm a bit nervous of doing something stupid) and I have an XT trailbike that is ideal for the job anyway. But all comments about the ride and handling still apply - very good in both cases. Someone else commented that the bike felt 'safe' and I would agree. Servicing was surprisingly easy. The service history for the last 10k miles was verbal not written (if you see what I mean), so I decided to do a full back-to-zero service for peace of mind. I didn't do the valve clearances as I ran out of time, and it all sounded good in any case. I will do that before any big trip, but I think it can stay as it is for the moment. Otherwise, very straightforward. The only issue was getting the body plastics back on. The plod mechanics who serviced it before used any fastener that came to hand, I think, so matching up all the fairing clips and screws at the end was pretty much trial and error, but I got there in the end. I fitted a new electric screen mechanism, as the previous one was jammed (hence the affordable price!). £200, but well worth it. Being able to adjust the screen height on the move is a hell of a luxury. One thing for Pan newbies - make sure you get the proper plug spanner! Nothing in my toolbox came close, and I ended up buying the proper tool, which is about 5 miles long as the plugs are recessed far down in the heads. Still delighted with the bike, and looking forward to the chance of putting a few big miles on her.

I got this bike as a direct replacement for a Triumph Trophy 1200 that I'd had for 3 years, Mechanically I find the Honda better than the older Triumph; Electrically it's a bit of a disaster the battery has gone flat on me 5 times in 16 months despite it being plugged into an optimate! The handling is good, it has a far more 'planted' feel about it, it's a bit snatchy -due to the Fuel injection- in 1st gear, but this discretion is more than made up for by the smoothness of the power delivery once you get moving (and it sounds great when you really open the throttle!)
The major issues I have with the Honda (and these are relative to the Triumph) are the paint on the bike is very soft and scratches/rubs off easily, The weather protection is nowhere near as good as the Triumph was and servicing, at every 4k, is very expensive! but I think this is down to which dealer you use, shopping around is vital here, my dealer charged £250 for a simple 4k service that was supposed to be a levels check only! (I had the same service done at the Honda dealer in Morecambe for £90?!
I now (the warrantee is finished) do my own services.
However for the comfort, pleasure and a rather strange feeling of 'safeness' when being out on the bike I'm more than happy with the Pan!

What can I say that hasn't already been said by far better qualified commentators than me. Suffice to say this was always my dream bike and one that I never thought I would ever own but, luckily for me Mrs spartan had other ideas so now I am the very proud owner of a white 58 plate ST1300. It has fulfilled all of my expectations and then some from the smooth but powerful acceleration, the effortless cornering, unmistakable road presence, 50+ mpgh and phenmomenal stopping power. This is one hell of a bike that is built for comfort and mile eating comfort. I have spent up to eight hours in the saddle (not including rest stops) with no stiffness or discomfiture at all. Yes it is a big bike and at 300kgs plus it can be awkward moving it about to get it out of the garage but once it is moving it feels light and amazingly responsive. An excellent tourer just as Mr Honda claims but it is easily capapble of just riding it for fun. The build quality is just as you would expect from Honda; solid and efficient and the almost cockpit effect of riding with the screen all the way up is superb even if the roll back draught on your back feels as though your are being pushed towards the bars. The instrument configuration is well thought out and easy to look at. As you have probably gleaned from the above I am very impressed with my bike.

Just picked it up today, so a few first impressions and will follow up with a more detailed review later. Bringing it home from the seller's place involved 150 miles of motorway and A-road in pouring rain and high winds - not the best day to get used to a new bike. The ST is incredibly comfortable, very powerful, and handles like a much smaller bike. The stability at big lean angles is fantastic and although it is very heavy, it doesn't feel it once you are moving. Putting it away in the garage was a bit of a struggle though. The weather protection is the best - after 150 miles of driving rain, my light summer gloves were slightly damp but still comfy, and my suit had hardly any rain on it anywhere. The linked braking system is reassuring. I wouldn't want it on a sportsbike, but on a heavy tourer it works well. Mine is an ex-police bike, returned to civilian spec but still police white. You can have a lot of fun with this! I have never owned a big Honda before, but what everyone says is true - the build quality is amazing. And it seems to be reaonably economical - M-way at 80-100 and A-roads at 60-80, and it was giving me 50 mpg. I'll add more when I have some more to say. So far, I'm a very happy bunny.

Does everything - at a price.
weight is low down so it handles well - but there is a lot of weight - don't lay it down unless you have an olymic wejght lifting team handy to get it up again.
You cruise nicely at legal limits - then look at speedo and see what speed you are actually doing- the reading can be a trace faster than expected!!!
Only true sports bikes will leave the lights faster.
side boxes and top box will take a supermarket trolley of shopping.
With all this and the british weather, on a pan you stay dry without waterproofs as that massive fairing protects you. Does have a lot of length and side area so strong cross winds need treating with respect and the CBT style turn in the road with out putting your feet down can be considered a challenge!
Best bike I have ever riden

What a bike. I have 60K miles and the bike has never faltered. I have suprised many a young stud thru the mountains with the handling and a 1000 miles in 17 hours is no problem. Will cruise at 90 MPH all day and leave enough energy to dance all night.

This is the second Pan I've owned. The last was traded in with 72,000 miles for this one. It came from Western Australia police with 53000km on the clock and only space on the seat for the rider. Don't believe the critics, the Pan is the best bike I've ridden. The last one needed a new rear disc at 35,000miles and the exhaust changed at around 60,000. Other than that, the mechanic asked why I bothered to get it serviced, as nothing much ever needed done.

Love the bike , it is a model PP which means it is ex-police to you and me. I purchased it direct from Thames Valley Police with a service card and 48 000 miles on the clock. Engine is sweet and has now covered 63 000 miles , gearbox has a slight noise at 70 mph but it has spent 40 odd thousand miles sitting at this speed. Fitted with a high screen which makes upright touring easy , regular journeys Wales to Scotland with ease and 1 fuel stop. So far I have had to fit new discs to the front and a new exhaust the rest have just been standard service items. Buy One Now
