Suzuki VX 800cc 90/91 (H)
Overall Rating:

I have owned a VX 800 for quite a while and never had any problems with it, it is an effortless cruiser with loads of bottom end torque which accelerates in top gear from 30mph to 120mph effortlessly, it has the comfort of a cruiser with the lightness and agility of a sports bike which is ideal for use as both a commuter bike and a weekend cruiser making it truly versatile.

I owned one of these for two years. the only reason to change was having my head turned by a 1200 Bandit!

It has the bulletproof 800cc V-Twin engine fitted to the Intruders but it is NOT a cruiser. The engine is the soul of this bike, it's a torque monster. Into top at 30/40 mph and just leave it there! Vibrations are well controlled but this feels like a 'proper' bike. Easy starting, hot or cold and that lovely V-twin sound!

It's a 'standard' bike. As such the riding position allows a good turn of speed without the disadvantages of a 'sports' style bike.

These bike's make excellent tourers and all purpose bikes. A fairing/screen is a huge benefit. The genuine half fairing by TCP is only available on European models but is excellent if you can find one. With that fairing cruising at motorway speeds is effortless.

A good size tank and good fuel economy (approx 50mpg) allow approx 160 miles before reserve.

The front suspension is soft as standard, progressive front springs sort this out. I fitted BT020's front and rear which transformed the handling still further. Hagon rear shocks are a popular upgrade.

The single front disc worries some but I never had any doubts that the bike would stop in time, I'm not a 'stoppie' merchant though!. The rear disc brake is excellent. To get the best out of the braking on these bikes use both! I fitted braided lines which improved the feel of the brakes enormously.

In the UK these are rare. I had many riders come up to discuss the bike with me and received many compliments on the look of the bike.

A good buy as a post DAS first big bike, as a general purpose bike or even just as a winter bike. With it's shaft drive you can forget chain lube!!

If you want to ride something that you rarely will see anywhere else, consider one of these.

I have owned and driven several bikes and find this bike responsive and good for long trips after adding a fairing and progressive susp. Compared to Buell the VX is more reliable and quicker off the line and approximately the same weight. Buell is a wheely machine much to short for set up. Also added a set of jardine rumblers and lifted the carb needles a bit and the bike really wakes up. No vibration troubles compared to Harleys. Not a GSXR but cannot tour with them and enjoy the trip. So I truly enjoy my VX thanks.

Very strange bike. Seat is uncomfortable. Lots of vibration. Braking can be scary. Good top speed if you can hang on due to upright riding position. Have to say the most boring and physically uncomfortable bike I have ever owned. Think twice

Had this silver VX for three years now. Only problems despite all year riding/commuting have been with the tank rusting through (sealed repeatedly) and excessive and uneven wear in the rear disc though it was bought with a 'ribbed' disc the brake(s) hadn't seized. Rear disc replaced and both calipers (F&R) stripped and rebuilt using new seals, no further problems. Additionally bike came with annodised aluminium brake hose fittings on braided steel hoses, both sets of fittings (F&R) corroded and split within three months of each other..in the summer! Replaced both hoses and fittings with S/S braided. Reliable starts in all weathers (parked in garden overnight) Fast enough for commuting, long drives a bit of a pain (1-2 hours max)in the but. Engine torquey and responsive. Wheelies well with the girlfriend on the back otherwise difficult! Strange handling is, despite the uprated forks and shocks, due to the raked out forks (like the Intruder, probably a similar frame, SACHS had the right with idea USD forks, twin disc!). Bit like the parents, love it to bits but can't live with it for any longer! Looking for a big Monster, Buell possibly a Fazer Thou. Overall underated bike (different from the norm and thats got to be good!)

A hard to categorise bike, a sort of street/retro/tourer, but a good all rounder. Regularly returns 50 mpg and will do 120 mph (as long as you can hang on) Front suspension too soft and will bottom out under hard braking or major potholes, rectify by fitting progressive springs then its ok. I toured South of England & Channel Isles last year with no problems.

V-Twin roadster with enough torque and turn of speed to surprise many machines. Capable tourer that eats miles and returns 50mpg. It will pull 120mph Very strong engine. Single front disk works. Vibes a bit and seat is a bit narrow after a couple of hundred miles. Pillion comfy. Gets admiring looks from the non racer fraternity. Rare now but worth picking one up as a work horse or weekend jaunter.

A V-Twin Shaft Driven Bandit, Engine has torque from 1500rpm, needs better brakes, but will sit at 90+ mph as long as your arms will let you. A more interesting alternative to the NTV650/Gt550 courier norm, comfortable but a little bit heavy
