I shall give a quick summary of the 1994/95 Suzuki GS125ESM. Its comfortable, but if you're tall (I am about 6 foot) it starts to take a toll on your back as the seat is tilted forward so you move back but slide back down to the tank. It handles like a dream, avoiding those pot holes and drain covers is easy on this beast. The pulling away power from stand still is fantastic but slowly loses power towards 8000 rpm in 4th.
Only £10.56 to fill up (at 102.9p per litre) and seems to last forever.
As usual the front breaking is better than the back but the back with a touch can take off enough speed to comfortably go round corners in built up places.
When cruising at 30mph it is a comfortable and enjoyable ride, as you hit 55mph+ you start to get battered by the wind, if its windy then becareful because the bike is ultra light (an add-on to that, if people want to turn up and put it in their van to drive off it won't take longer than 4 or 5 mins, get a lock)..

But overall, a great learners bike!

very bad finish proverbial rust on wheels, chrome fell off within weeks of leaving showroom, will not run correctly took it back to shop many times (they were not interested, too cheap a bike not the latest hyper gsxrrrrrr) gave in getting ready to throw it in the bin.

this is my first "big Bike" after completing my test on and now being on a restricted 33bhp liscence. I wasa first drawn to this bike as they are widely know as been good starter bikes. They are know to be bullet proof using a simple twin cylinder air colled engine. As well as this i see mine as been reasnably cheap to run. i would have thought 70+ mpg where as de restricted its about 52 as far i know. insurance yet again very reasnable as well as tax about £48. These are some of the factors that make them so popular as a first bike a long/commuter bikes. last year i covered roughly 17000 miles which were hassle free just the usual tyres/chains/sprockets/break pads. this was untill this year the output shaft on the gear box striped. but been a popular bike parts are easily obtained, and the engine been a so simple is easy to strip, as well as maintain. so overall a fantastic bike in my opinion and i cant think of a better first bike. i would have though it to be bad luck that the output shaft stripped asi have only ever seen one other gs500 with the same problem so it cant be that comman.

Ive had several GS1000s over the last five years and in general they have all been very reliable. Whether Ive just been lucky with the charging system I don't know,but it definitely helps to run the headlights all the time,and always make sure the oil is full.


These engines are a real pleasure,loads of grunt low down and a decent ammount of power until 8000 revs(about 92BHP).You can go fast enough to really amuse yourself,but BEWARE! The brakes are truly dreadful even if the system is completely rebuilt with new ss hoses,you will only see a small improvement,but you do get used to it and make allowances.


The prettiest is easily the blue and white 'S' model with the small fairing and they are going up in price quickly. However you can still buy a good E model from upwards of £800,which I'm sure makes them very underrated. Walk away from a smoker,at the moment they are not recouping an engine rebuild,but don't be put off by clutch noises,they all do that,sir!


All in all a good handling fast heavy reliable old brute that will make you smile.I love both mine(and my Kwak ZRX1200)

The GS550 sits in a large, full sized frame, typical of a UJM motorcycle. The little 550cc motor does a great job, buzzing along on 4 cylinders. got to keep the revs up somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm if you want to keep the power and torque where it needs to be.

The bike has a pretty good front brake for a single disc, but not up to the standard of a modern bike. Perhaps steel brake lines would help.

The rear drum brake, non-hydraulic, is pretty weak.

Ergonomics is very good. Handling is good, as the skinny tires (by today's standards) make the bike flick into corners quickly. Obviously a 30 year old bike isn't going to corner like modern bikes, so you have to back off the agressiveness by about 20 percent.

The bike is quite tall and a little on the heavy side, so not a beginners bike.

If you want a nice old UJM, without tons of power, which is good for minor roads, this bike is the ticket.

The bike has "points" which require overhaul every 10,000 km. If you want a more maintenance free bike, go with a little later year (1982 and beyond) where you'll get electronic ignition, tires without spokes, and 4 valves per cylinder.

If you're into nostalgia, go for an old GS 550, 1978 or earlier with spokes tires. Just be prepared to spend a little more care and love on it.

Also, they tend to have little gas and oil leaks, so if you want perfection, definitely don't buy an old bike.

If you can live with the temperment of an old bike, the GS550 rocks!

Bought the bike brand new, actually it was a replacement, (the first was stolen). Bike thieves, get a job and a life!
So apart from that, So Far so good!
Clocked up over 45,000 kms...still going strong- no major service, just Oil changes, a set of spark plugs at 30,000...also a new rear tyre at 35,000 [the other had a hole that insisted on leaking no matter what, plugs and goo-do not always fix]. Next thing due is a new 520-xso chain and front/rear sprockets.
More about the Chain next time I write.

Had the bike 2 months. Great bike never lets me down. Pulls in any gear, smooth even at top speed of 75mph. Stands out from the crowd, great fuel econemy would defintly recommend!

I bought a new GS500F K5 a year ago and have found it to be an absolutely superb machine. I also own a 20-year old GS250T which shares a very similar design of power plant. In fact the older GS250T is an eight-valve engine with all the complexities that brings, whereas for the GS500 the Suzuki designers bravely opted for a more reliable (though lower power) 4 valve design which makes it even more reliable than its 250cc predecessor. The engine design on the GS500 therefore has a very long pedigree and I would be very surprised if there were any major design or manufacturing flaws remaining. That said, my GS500 engine did exhibit a knocking sound when the bike was leaned to one side – I took it back to the dealers (Crescent Suzuki in Bournemouth England) and they told me it was a known problem with this engine. They got a complete set of parts to fix the problem which, after fitting, completely cured the problem (well done guys, I was impressed with your service). Incidentally, the problem is cam shaft float – it does not affect the performance or reliability of the bike, its just a bit annoying and would obviously make it difficult to sell the bike on. So my advice to anyone who buys a GS500 is to listen out for this noise and take it straight back to your dealer – Suzuki know all about it and they won’t argue. I have done 12000km on my bike in the last year and if I take it easy on the run to work and back (30km each way) I can get close to 80mpg. Yet the GS500 will go like stink if you wind open the throttle and let it rev towards the red line – certainly plenty enough power unless you are a very experienced rider and can handle more. The handling of the bike is outstanding, it feels very reassuring even in the wet and I have never had a slide out of it. You can reckon on 15000km out of a set of tyres if you don’t burn rubber too hard. The brakes work well, though the rear does squeak a bit unless you apply it hard. My GS500 has started first touch of the starter every morning for the last year and has never let me down. Its powerful and comfortable up for two-up riding, though if rider and passenger are on the big side I think it would struggle a bit. I intend to use mine to do some touring as well as commuting and am really looking forward to that. If I have one gripe it is build quality – you have to be prepared to keep this bike sprayed with anti-corrosion spray on all the vulnerable parts (you’ll find out which they are if you keep an eye on them and watch for corrosion to appear) - then give them a squirt regularly and you’ll be OK. This is especially important in the (English) winter when they salt the roads – if you’re not careful your bike will look like a real dog by the end of the winter. Regarding after-market exhausts – in the UK try Predator (Google it and you’ll find it easy enough) – they do a nice stainless exhaust for around 300 quid which should see you alright for many years (better than the mild steel job that Suzuki put on which is never going to last any time at all).

Excellent Beginner Bike! It my first ride and for the money u cant go wrong even new...The F model has nice fairings and has some pep to it...overall it handles very well but front suspension and brakes could be a bit better.

I have had my GS500 for around 8 months and have done over 6000km without incident. I bought it brand new and love it!! I am not a fan of the bike around town as I find it much prefers the 5000rpm mark of the open road.. iI have used it to travel 500km trips and have found that it handles it very well, its just me that gets tired not the bike. I get excellent milage with up to 27km / litre (what that is in miles i dont know?) the only one thing I can say that I do not like in that the bike doesnt have a fairing, and at 110 km/hour it makes you wish you had bought the GS500F. But overall an excellent bike and I recommend it.
