Formerly the owner of a 600cc Transalp, I bought the 650 hoping for improved power, suspension and handling and got them. The 650 is also more economical, giving me between 55 and 62mpg depending on riding style. Power may not be startling, but it is linear and delivered from as low as 2000rpm in the higher gears. The bike will pull top gear from 40mph and fourth from 30mph, helping to achieve good fuel consumption. Tank range easily exceeds 200 miles once you gain trust in the consistent but not very reassuring fuel gauge.
Tyres, a major running cost of any motorcycle, are inexpensive tubed cross-ply.
Top speed is claimed to be around 110mph; the 650 will easily cruise at 80mph with good acceleration available. On twisty or bumpy roads good ground clearance, firm long-travel suspension, predictable steering and excellent balance make the bike easy to ride quickly. The brakes are satisfactory given a hard squeeze and well-suited to 'all-roads' use. Reliability was faultless on my example which ran perfectly even after 10 hours' riding in hard rain. The main drawback with any Transalp is ease of maintenance; removing the fairing or fuel tank is time-consuming and getting to the tappets is easier if the coolant is drained and the carburettors removed.
The lockable seat covers a large storage compartment big enough to take inner tubes and tyre levers. The plastic belly pan is surprisingly tough and well able to withstand impact from small rocks. Off-road handling is superior to the 600 and off-road ability mainly limited by tyre choice, suspension travel and ground clearance.
The riding position is very comfortable and arguably better than the BMW R1100RT I owned previously, but pillion accommodation is not as generous. The fairing and handguards do a good job of deflecting rain and the fairing vents keep the knees warm in cold weather. The standard screen, however, is low and much improved with the addition of a spoiler or high screen.

Honda Transalp

Just completed a tour of the east coast of Spain and the old bull never let me down.
The best mid-range tour bike ever made!

I bought the bike new last year,I haven't got the mileage they say you can get from it. 124 miles to a full tank I've been getting. Brakes aren't the best but its not a racer. Comfort wise and reliability is good ,I'm still trying to get fond of it but in time I think I will succumb.

Great to find a bike that 'Does what it says on the box'
I have found it to be very comfortable over 200 mile runs, however 200 miles is all you will get out of a 4 gal tank - so not very special on fuel. Maybe that is part of the price for the protection you get, as the fairing, whilst not massive, really does keep the wind and rain off.

It is not a light bike, nor will it suit short legs but is a very easy, stable ride. Adding a pillion and gear won't trouble it either. Honda build quality is there although not as good as it was. Mine has proved 100% reliable and a good 'Return bike' after a 10 year break from riding. Not the most exciting bike but does all things well and with out drama.

Bought mine new. I did 20000 miles in 5 months, rear pads 6000 miles, I'm still on original front pads, rear bridgestone max 7000 miles, avon distanzia (130/90) so far 8000 miles, still some rubber left, front bridgestone recently replaced (20000!). Good in town, motorways 90-100 mph easy (if not too windy) tall screen nice. 200 miles on one tank. Output shaft worn after 16000 miles (very bad! honda says chain too tight, bollocks). Sun, rain, snow it'll cope, comfy 10-14 hours everyday no problem. Great workhorse.

This bike I'd say is underated, it does everyting well.. but thats the problem.. it will go offroad (and mine did several times) but its too easy to damage (waterpump right at the front, even with a bash plate its asking for it) on the road it handles freakishly well at low speed (could ride it full lock at walking pace!) at higher speed it took quite a lot to upset the suspension. But it was almost like driving a car, the ride was very comfortable apart from the absoloutely dire seat. Unless you weigh 8 stone then budget for an aftermarket seat as this one was DIRE (and newer ones are amazingly even worse!).. also make sure your CDI units are using the modified holder or they WILL fail (design fault fixed in later versions)
If you have just passed your test it's a very good choice, easy going and predictable handling, or if your commuting through busy traffic, the transalp will get you where you want to go but it is not exciting; in fact you might as well go and buy a ford mundaneo for your thrills... I've ridden "older" "slower" twins, on paper they might be slower but in reality the transalp isn't a rip snorting beast. It's smooth and predictable output is great for learners or commuters, but boring as a party political broadcast for anything else...
Good allrounder is the perfect description, if you want to get there with no hassle this is the bike, but thats not what bikes are for?

What a bike. I am riding Africa and to all the most deserted places. I do this solo, this is how much I trust my Alp. Going on solo trip to Angola and know that nothing, abselutely nothing will brake.

I replaced a Blackbird with the Transalp to preserve life and licence.. The bike is growing on me day by day and is much easier on the back and wrists. It is proving completely fault free in commuting but needs a sixth gear for crawling in first and hooning in top. Engine has plenty of character but would like another 10/15hp. I have tried it off road and it is surprisingly fleet of foot with continental tkc80 front and back. Kept up with all the XL 600s no touble on gravel and sand but scary in the mud.. Eats back tyres (5000-6000 km). Rear suspension works better 2 up as it is very firm and jiggly but leads to great handling on twisty roads. Seat could do with a bit of padding for longer travels (330km range on open road). Quite rare sight in NZ but the tour companies are starting to use them. Expensive relative to BMW 650 and worth it. The engine is streets ahead as is the build quality.

Got an N reg 600 Transalp at Easter this year. It was my first bike for a couple of years so I didn't want to scare myself silly or worse. It is an incredibly easy bike to ride. The torquey engine makes gear changing almost redundant above 20 mph and the wide handlebars makes steering simple. The riding position is high and mighty with an excellent view over the tops of the tin can brigade. All this makes it an ideal commuter which is mostly what I use it for. When taken for a slightly more strenuous work out it is pleasantly surprising what this bike is capable of. It actually handles very nicely although a different cornering technique is required compared to the sports machines many of us are accustomed to. The engine is nice and smooth and up to about 80mph pulls quite nicely thank you very much. However this is no rocketship. Above 80mph it is starting to struggle and if you really start to hustle it it's worst feature becomes very apparent. The brakes are way too weak. This is a shame as its the kind of bike you would want to stuff into a corner braking quite late and then squirting it out of the apex using all that lovely torque. The poor brakes however leave you with a feeling of trepidation rather than anticipation every time a corner hoves into view. I believe the 650 Transalp has far superior brakes and I reckon this would improve the old Trannie immensely. If your mates on their R1's and 'Blades ask you if you want to go for a spin either politely decline or choose very bumpy twisty B roads as the route, otherwise you will be totally blown into the weeds. At the end of the day this bike is very good at what it is supposed to be and rather good at stuff it isn't. If you want a good fun easy to ride dependable bike and you don't buy into all that cutting edge sports stuff this could be the bike for you. As for me I fancy a test ride on a TDM900.

Great allrounder! Use it for commuting and have ridden it in the Sahara (Morocco) - fell off a few times but she just keeps going! Easy to work on, not so fast so less chance of killing yourself. Not very common in UK so feel quite original as well.< > Things I would say could be improved are: -< >height of windshield (I'm 6'1'')< >petrol cap (better for tank bags if it were flat - it is flat on new models though)< >bashplate - is made of plastic, should have Africa Twin type.< >petrol tank could be a bit bigger, maybe 20L instead of 17L.< > They are all minor, would buy another!
