Bought my VFR 800 2003 with 8000 miles on clock and full service history from a dealer in west sussex. It was an absolute steel at £1500, However it did have a minor mark on the front panel and a small crack so after repairing this it came to about £1800. Loved this bike and was a very good ride. Sold this for £3500!

Having owned a VFR750 FK (88 model) 15 years ago and since then had a succession of BMWs, Honda’s the last bike being the highly underrated Yamaha Thundercat. The need to change came about when a knee injury was causing a lot pain after an hours ride on the regular two and half hour trip to Bournemouth to see my mother.
The Thundercat regrettably had to go. I saw a private ad for a Honda VFR800Fi-X for £1500 with only 34K miles. A snap decision was made and memories of the sheer fun on the old VFR were coming back. The later model must be better – right?
The seller was a decent chap who sadly had lost his license due a medical condition causing gradual loss of sight. The test ride was not quite as pleasurable had I hoped. Compared to the Thundercat it was very lumpy and snatchy in the most of the gears below 3K rpm which made town riding a bit of a pain and reminded me of my friends Yamaha TDM900. Not at all like my old model VFR. Once out of town it was better and more importantly the peg position was lower so hopefully more comfortable on longer runs. The bike had a stainless Motad down pipes and a new rear shock it was too good of a bargain to let go.
A week later I was the new owner and two hundred mile ride out was its first test with some friends. The bike performed OK, but was awful riding around the sea side town of Cromer on a very busy congested Sunday afternoon.
The clutch was heavy and the lurching, and snatching in most gears below 3K rpm was beginning to irritate me.
It also runs hot which is alarming at first. The fan cuts in quite late – which is normal evidently. The VFR forum confirmed all of above were all like that
A trip to Bournemouth showed its strengths on motorways and A roads – its mid-range power was a joy and it did have better suspension than the Thundercat and slowly I’ve begun to gel with the bike.
Linked brakes work efficiently – don’t know why some people dislike them so much and go to the trouble of converting them to a standard setup. I had to use them in anger the other day and the reduced dive of the forks made me appreciate them more.
I fitted heated grips which made cold weather journeys more tolerable.
I’ve adjusted the PAIR vacuums to improve low speed and hesitant running but made no real difference. Then an article in Motorcycle sport & Leisure about one of their testers who bought the identical model to mine fitted a different silencer and said it made the bike a little smoother. I had Viper silencer which was for the Thundercat but when fitted with its supplied link pipe it made the silencer stick out of the side too much. So it only got used once and stored away to sell.
Fortunately it was compatible with the VFR and just had to buy a new link pipe.
Just fitted it and it’s a neat fit. The road legal Viper is a lot smaller and looks less cumbersome than original. The biggest surprise is that it appears to have eliminated the hesitancy at low speed. It’s still lumpy of course but it does not feel it’s about to stall.
It now pulls without hesitating from just over 2K RPM in top gear which was not possible before without lurching and snatching. It’s a dramatic improvement.
It’s only 5 degrees C outside so it too early to say it’s a complete fix until a warmer weather appears. If it remains successful I hope to have a more enjoyable time with the VFR and look forward to some continental trips.

Don't get me wrong - I loved the 1980's.
But unfortunately, I've always hated 80's bikes.
Horrible square headlamped dogs with far too many wide go-faster stripes for my liking.
That is until now ...
My VFR400R left the production line as I left school.
We ventured into the world all shiny and new.
Both wanting to be different.
With the VFR's Pro-arm and white wheels - it certainly had a very distinctive look about it.
Fantastic handling. Very light weight so happily slings itself in and out of bends. Bit cramped for the tall I fear with your elbows fouling your knees if you should be 6ft and over. A pleasant surprise though for the shorter legged - finally a sports bike that didn't require step ladders to get onto.
The roar from the V4 is cracking and with the right exhaust can fitted this lion can sound awesome.
Reliability wise - well just one word for you = Honda
And as for a square headlight ... Thankfully Honda were kind.

The VFR400 NC30 maybe 18yrs old but it's so good they're not in the for-sale ads for long!.I got mine Feb2008 &it's had it's wear&tear faults but the V4 engine has not let it down once&the beautiful note coming from it's Scorpion exhaust tells you this isn't just a great bike for beginners but everyone and it's now known as a 'LEGEND'.It proved it's place amongst the best on track&road!.Parts are easily got through dealers or Ebay so keeping your pride&Joy on the road is easy enough. You can ride this easily around town&also become a hooligan out of it!&the power delivery is so good you won't be caught out but always impressed!.The bike handles so well&confidence just oozes out along with it's great looks.I love this bike&it will be with me for some time.

The VFR750FR-V - the best all-round bike Honda ever made?
OK, so many people think of the Honda VFR as a fuddy-duddy bike -
associated with middle-aged men who can't cope with sportsbikes, or
accused of the usual Honda "blandness". But they couldn't be more
wrong. The VFR (especially this last incarnation of the 750 models)is
a brilliant do-it-all bike. Of course, like anything which is truly
multi-purpose, you can argue that more specialist machines are
"better" than it at any given job. But you won't find a machine which
is so good at so many roles anywhere.
One of the first things to note about the VFR is that it's been
around for over 25 years in its various versions, and that throughout
the 80s and early 90s it regularly won "bike of the year" awards in
the press. Even though opinion on the latest 800 versions is more
divided, the VFR750 still comes up time and again in lists of top-10
all-time bikes in the press. It had the traditional Honda build
quality, was a phenomenal and effective piece of engineering
(single-sided swingarm, gear driven cams, lovely balanced V4
configuration) and there are plenty of stories about the unburstable
engine being able to do well into the 6 figure range with no problems
- about the only weakness is a tendency for regulator/rectifiers to
fail (and the mild steel exhaust collector corrodes, but don't they
all). Carefully ridden well over 200 miles on a tank of fuel is an
easy possibility, and major services are 16k apart.
Yet this workhorse bike handles superbly and can still go like stink
(a stock VFR was once ridden by Ron Haslam to third place against
factory race bikes in the Transatlantic Trophy). OK you don't have
the brute power of a modern litre-plus sportsbike on tap but you do
have a turbine-like engine with a wonderfully smooth power delivery,
and unless you're on a racetrack the VFR has more power (and more
USABLE power)than most of us would need, and can stay with any
bigger, sportier bikes through the twisties.
The other glories of the last 750s are that they have carbs instead
of injection and so suffer none of the low-throttle snatchiness that
often occurs with FI bikes, which combined with its balance and
semi-forward position make it an easy bike to run round town and
through traffic, being docile and tractable at low revs but still
capable of howling with the best of them if you want to open it up...
...and that's another thing. No other bike sounds like a VFR when you
get going. That howl is unique to the V4 and it's gorgeous. My
friends know when I'm approaching because it's a unique sound, and a
great one.
It will also take a pillion without them having to get off every
fifteen minutes because their knees are so tightly bent, or put them
off because they're perched up so high - and even more remarkably, it
will still go and handle just as well two-up as solo, which is a very
rare feat.
Are there any downsides? Well, about the only thing which might be
better are the brakes, which whilst being very capable lack the sheer
bite and power of modern top-range systems. And of course being
15-odd years old, shocks and exhausts will be worn and in need of
replacement - but that's true of any bike of that age. Fit a new
monoshock, bung on a stainless exhaust, and perhaps add a custom seat
- not because the original is uncomfortable, but because you will
never want to get out of the saddle :-) - and you have a bike which
will commute, tour, scratch, and do anything with the best of them.
Add to that the fact that due to its age you can pick a good one up
for less than 2k, and it's only insurance group 13... Good grief what
are you waiting for! Go and buy one!
But not mine... I'm not selling. I prefer to ride and enjoy :-)

What to say about the VFR? Well I've had sports bikes most of my time but decided to go for something that might be comfortable and less back breaking and wrist snapping than I was used to. Looked round for candidates and a friend let me have a go on his VFR and was hooked from the start, now don't get me wrong this bike isn't all sweetness and smiles. So I decided to go down my local honda dealer and see what they had in to offer in the way of quality used goods. After some haggling about price and what freebies they might throw in, to try and influence a deal, then after signing on the dotted line and the sad farewell to my 05 plate ninja, it was done and I was commited and not to the local nut house either. I picked up the bike on a nice sunny friday afternoon and decided to go and see what it was capable of doing. Round town wasn't pleasureable. It wasn't happy in traffic and even though was a cool day, the temp was starting to go skyward quickly till it got to 106 and the fans kicked in. The engine isn't smooth round town and is lumpy in traffic and almost made me feel sea sick with the too and throwing. The throttle seems to come on sudden and jerks the front end into life. Once I got out of town onto some familiar country roads then the bike seemed to find its niche. The bike handled well enough and seemed to pull nicely and the judder effect of a v engine disappeared once it got upto 5 grand. So a bit further on and we'd started to get acquainted and I opened the throttle and once the vtech kicked in a horrible sound of what sounded like some mechanic had left a few of his spanners in the engine for a joke came into life. After I got to my local cafe I went to put the bike on its centre stand and almost got an hernia in the process. I know it might seem as though I wasn't happy with the bike but the truth is this bike has grown on me and is comfy on long hauls and is so at home clocking up mileage and after a 250 mile round journey I got off it and didn't walk as though I had some kind of disability. The truth is it doesn't do anything brilliantly but on the other hand it doesn't do anything totally bad either. THis bike has surprised me and I like it, but one mans dream is another mans knightmare. ps almost forgot but winter riding isn't too clever with the linked brakes on icy or greasy roads

I have always wanted one since the single sided 800 came out some 12 yrs ago. I picked my 99 FiX up a yr ago from my local Kent Motorcycles. It had 22k on and a very detailed full history, something to always look for. All the body work is original and datatagged, it hasn't even been dropped. I checked the bike and then flicked the starter, there was that sound, not like a screaming inline but a purpose rumble only a v engine can give, and that sweet low whine that tells you it ain't got a chain drive but cogs directly driving the cams, another bonus with all the cam chain adjuster failings I have experienced. As you set off there is power right where you need it, from about 3k it just builds up, not a smack of sudden power but before you know your moving through the gears and making quick progress. It isn't the fastest bike I have owned but keeps up with most modern 600 sports bikes, my friend has a zx6 and we often ride together. What I like is the way it does everything without really trying. Lots of protection from the wind without buying a replacement screen and i'm 5' 11" tall, you don't get cramped up and the bars are at a nice hight, something you will appreciate if you have ridden a sports bike for more than a 100 miles without stopping.Infact the only time I find myself needing to stop is for other riders or when my fuel gauge tells me and that can be some 180 miles of fun later. The VFR has a good easy to read display which includes LED temp and fuel. In my year of ownership I udse it constantly to travel to work and ride out for fun. It has never let me down I have't needed to replace a tyre in 6k, and only made one adjustment on the chain, I beleive this is directly down to the way it makes its power, smooth and liner. Over all I would say it is the best allrouder and the best of many I have owned in my 28 yrs of riding. It is very well made, as you would expect from Honda, many people remark on it's condition, reliability has been faultless, comfort is proberly the best for a sports tourer, handling well it isn't as quick as a sports bike to drop into a turn but still it turns in without any issues and you can get on the throttle earlier with the big v. After a long time playing with the settings I have found a setting which suits my heavy build and gives good feedback what the bike is doing. Braking well this is the first linked system I have ridden and after an intial soft long travel issue, fixed with new pads and fluid, I can't really tell the difference in my ridding, which can be quite spirited, MPG that depends on that twist grip on the right, anywhere between 35-50mpg I have experienced and it loves the higher grade fuels. Running costs, apart from the early brake issue which is a service part, I have't even needed to top up the oil, so one service at £120 and an Mot. Preformance wise I certainly don't need any more, having said that I am thinking of increasing the rear sprocket which will lower the gearing and release a little more power but I ride a lot in town and it is something I want to try to help with low speed filtering. I have ridden the V-TEC version of my bike and must say I still prefer mine. For sale, not likely I can't find any bike I would rather have at the moment
