NEW MOTORCYCLE ROAD TEST - HYOSUNG GT 650R
A VERY TEMPING ALTERNATIVE – LOOK OUT JAPAN
* What’s It all About?
South Korean’s largest manufacturer, Hyosung, have come a long way in a relatively short time. They’ve expanded their product range substantially in recent years and now offer a selection of machines stretching from inexpensive scooters to powerful sport bikes. One of their latest models, the Hyosung GT650R, is now challenging Japan’s and Europe’s best in the middleweight sports bike sector. Make no mistake, this bike offers an excellent riding experience for an incredibly low, value for money price.
* What Does It Cost?
£3,999 gets you a well made machine that most definitely stands comparison with some of the best motorcycles in its class. Compare that with models that it’s up against such as Ducati’s Multistrada 1100 at £7,750 and the BMW R1200R at £8,295. True, the Italian and German motorcycles offer better resale value and the brands more prestige but you can’t afford to ignore the Hyosung, especially as it feels a lot better built than other more expensive machines in it’s area of the market.
* How Does It Handle?
The Koreans have caught up with the competition and the Hyosung GT650R’s handling is agile and pretty competent. The front floating calibre twin disc brakes not only pull the bike up well but offer plenty of progressive feel. The front upside-down forks are fully-adjustable so that the bike’s handling characteristics can be altered to match rider tastes.
Ride comfort is exemplary while the riding position is better than that found on several rivals. Hyosung currently rely on good old-fashioned carburetion with two Mikuni carbs feeding the fuel rather than injection which turns out to be no bad thing. There’s excellent throttle response on tap with smooth power delivery and the fine, free revving V Twin engine produces decent midrange grunt, excellent for confident overtaking manoeuvres.
* Verdict
The Koreans have managed to do an excellent job with the GT’s styling. Yes, some detailing could be improved such as at the rear of the bike and around the front brakes, but overall the Hyosung’s appearance is pleasing to the eye.
Hyosung’s GT650R would please riders who need a machine for the daily commuter run during the week but want a bike that they can have fun with at the weekends. At £3,999 there’s nothing to touch it. Watch out world, the Koreans have arrived.
Hyosung’s GT650 range also includes the half-faired S model on sale at £3,899 and the naked GT650 which can be purchased for £3,599. The range is covered by a two-year manufacturer warranty.

what can i say.....fantastic bike, with lots of value for money, i have upgraded a few parts on my bike, i have added a tinted double bubble screen, hel performance brake lines, armstrong HH race pads, gsxr 750 rear shock, sprayed my rear sets and pillion pegs in black and clear coated them, fitted crash bungs and swing arm protectors, fitted a scorpion titanium exhaust, much better and very very loud, ive also got a seat cowl coming, i have added new rubber, bridgestone battleaxe bt020 tyres, better than the original 45's , added little carbon fibre yoke protector and petrol cap trim, ive also added a 6x5 number plate with a modified fender eliminator, and added mini indicators all round, the bike is very fast for a 650 and easily out runs the sv650 and beats it hands down for looks, for more information on this bike visit the owners club www.korider.com for all your hyosung needs

I have the gt 125 r model and this bike looks great to say the least, a proper sports bike look and could pass for a 600 anytime.The bike runs and handles great but with such a big bike for a 125cc engine its speed is not the best.I have replaced the standard can with a blue flame and it does help greatly with the performance.The only major fault with these bikes is the kick stand censor,this makes the bike cut out if you put it into gear with the stand down.I had prods with the comet i had with this but its easy solved by disconecting it and looping it back in.Over all if your look ing for a learner legal bike with big bike looks this is the one to have.

Hyosung GT125
I own the 125cc version of the GT125R. I have to say this bike is amazin'. Great for commuting and all round every day riding.
This bike is also very comfortable, unlike most sport bikes. The new digi dash is very easy on the eyes and makes it clearer to see when riding.
I had a Scorpion exhaust fitted (no baffle). This makes the bike sound like the 650 version or even a Suzuki SV.
I would highly recommend this bike to any first time buyer or rider.

What can i say? Fantastic bike! I've had this bike for just under a year now and had no problems at all. It gets lots of looks, and always draws a crowd. The build quality is good, not as good as some jap bikes, but give it time and I seriously think they will be at the same standard. The bike's main rival is the Suzuki SV650 which Hyosung built parts for under license.
The Hyosung has faster acceleration, and top end, the bike handles very well into the corners, and is very stable at top speed. I've added an aftermarket can, from a ZX6R which is a direct bolt on,the sound is amazing. The bike feels much more alive now and seems to have a bit more go!!!
Genuine and aftermarket parts are not a problem to get either, as the market is growing with each passing month.
Would I buy another???? Yes I would! I'm actually thinking about getting the GT650X, or possibly the GT1200X when it finally arrives.
To summarize, if you buy one of these Hyosungs I guarantee you won't be disapointed, the 2007 models in the UK are totally trouble free. If you're looking at reviews from the 05/06 models then they may be negative as the bikes did have a few problems with valves but rest assured its all been sorted now. For more info on the bikes and somewhere to ask questions about modding your Hyosung please visit, www.korider.com

I've got the 125 version of the Comet GT125-R model and to be honest i'm astounded as to how nice and good a bike it really is.
First impression are that it's maybe a 400cc, as the overall stature of the bike is much bigger than the CBR, NSR, Mito or Sachs 125cc's.
On the style front again it wins out; nice clean race lines; nice wide tyres; brakes that actually do stop you (always a good feature) and with the 4-stroke full sized DOHC V-twin engine, you're not short of power (or as much power as you'd expect in a 125).
Exhaust seems to be quite good quality (not biscuit tin, as you sometimes get and burn through in a month). The Digi dash gives it a nice modern look; big display too (easy on the eyes).
More power than i expected from this size of bike; excellent Mpg too.
As a big bloke it's nice and comfy with a good sized seat and loads of room to get the belly in (lol). The suspension a bit hard for my taste, but hell ... it's a 125.
Yup, I'd reccommend the Hyosung Comet / GT125-R as both a local commuter and as an ideal learner legal first bike.
An all round we cracker with race looks to match.
JP.

I bought my GT250 new and right away I knew the rear shock had to go, it had no damping to speak of and seriously affected handling. That done I took it to the mountains where it showed some potential. Gas mileage was dismal while playing, close to that of my 1200 Bandit.
Then with less than 3 months and only 6,700 km on the clock while running down the interstate it swallowed a valve and locked up. This engine was just broken in and never taken near red line. Now I can’t find anyone qualified to work on it, what good is a warranty? I was just starting to like this bike too.

THIS REVIEW SUBSEQUENT TO THE ONE OF SEPT '05. AFTER TWO YEARS OF OWNERSHIP.
THE 'BIKE IS FINE. SADLY THE DEALER BACKUP IS APPALLING TO SAY THE LEAST AND THE IMPORTER(J.BARRUS)WHO TOOK OVER FROM BAVANAR DON'T EVEN HAVE THE GOOD GRACE TO REPLY TO e-MAILS.
THE MISFIRE WHICH HAS PLAGUED THE BIKE FROM WORD GO STILL OCCURS,THE ONLY ADVICE FROM THE DEALER IS IT MUST BE MY RIDING STYLE(!!!)/NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE etc.etc.- THEY PROBABLY HAVN'T SOLD ENOUGH AND AS WORD GETS AROUND I DOUBT THEY'LL SELL ENOUGH TO FIND OUT!!
GETTING SPARES IS A NIGHTMARE,EVEN FOR COMMON SERVICE ITEMS - NOBODY LISTS THEM.I'M MAKING MY OWN PARTS LIST AS I DO FIND THEM.ANYONE WHO WANTS HELP IS WELCOME TO CONTACT ME.
MY BEST ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO IS THINKING OF ONE OF THESE IS: DONT!!! UNLESS YOU HAVE A EXTREMELY GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF MECHANICS AND ENJOY HUNTING ROUND FOR PARTS.(BEAR IN MIND ALSO THAT NO SERVICE MANUAL EXISTS FOR THIS 'BIKE BEFORE STARTING.)I THINK THE DEALER ONLY HAD ONE FOR THE 125.HARD LUCK ME FOR BEING THE OWNER OF A 'BIKE THAT NO-ONE WANTS FOR TRADE IN AGAINST SOMETHING DECENT.I WAS OFFERED £850 JUST THE OTHER DAY - POOR FOR SOMETHING JUST 2 YEARS OLD WHICH COST ALL BUT £3,000 O.T.R.THAT'S WHY I LIST RUNNING COSTS AS HIGH,AND RELIABILITY AS 2.
CAVEAT EMPTOR.

Done 1k miles and still quite happy with it, although i\'m disappointed it can\'t be derestricted. Hopefully de-cat-ing it will increase power a little. Definitely a fun cheap bike with very little running cost
