Pretty looking air-cooled twist'n'go scooter with 12 inch wheels and - it's most interesting feature - hub-centre steering. The model first came to the UK mid 90s and was obtainable new up until 2005. Italjet went bust, but with new owners of the brand is said to be reviving. The Formula range in the UK covered 50s and 125s, the latter with a parallel twin engine and disc brakes front and rear. (The early 50s had a rear disc too, but this was changed to a drum brake quite soon.)
The Formula 50 is easy to de-restrict; and when it is, it reaches 50mph with a solo rider on the flat. (A pillion passenger reduces this to an indicated 47mph on mine.) Low speed steering feels a little ponderous, but go over 5mph and the clever hub-centre steering with what is a front swinging arm is a pleasure: brake - and the scooter doesn't lurch downwards at all and the wheelbase remains constant, making it feel very sure-footed.
Consumption: c.75mpg. Acceleration: good for a 50, but not up to the best Peugeot standards. There is a liquid-cooled variant which costs more and the spec says it has more bhp, but I've never tried it. The headlight on my model has twin 25W bulbs which aren't effective and dip is a sidelight bulb, which is flash looking but a poor set up. Rider comfort is good with, most unsually for a scooter, a totally flat floor. (They're popular as paddock bikes for this reason as you can fit lots betwwen your legs.) Pillions have reasonable seat space but their footrest area is a bit slim. Storage: there is a small front panel compartment but the underseat storage is too small for a full-face helmet. Security: just a steering lock and seat lock.

I've had my Formula 50 for a month now, ok so its second hand but had only 800 miles on the clock when I bought it. I'm well pleased with the performance as the previous owner kindly had it de-restricted. It leaves ANY car at the lights, and corners fantastically thanks to the SIS on the front. Great road handling makes you feel safe whatever speed it goes. I've had 58 mph on a flat, I think its still got some breaking in to do so I'm gonna find me an (A) road and let it rip!!!

Great scoot, nippy and funky (when it works) but... I have had numerous electrical problems (now fixed) and after only four months of ownership (and less than 2,500KM), the thing needs a full engine rebuild! This shouldn't happen, epecially considering I haven't thrashed it or bashed it! It's been run on very good oil and the recommended petrol, yet it still needs the rebuild!!! I've been offered a fix under warranty, but I have no confidence at all that the scoot won't develop another (possibly different) fault soon after this gets sorted, so I'm now in the process of fighting for a refund. This was a UK bike with 3 years warranty, and cost me

At first my friends Formula Air 50 was extreamly slow with his average speed of about 25mph and about 15mph up hills!! He was always being left behind while we were all riding so he was desperatly trying to get it de-resticted and yesterday he did. The bloke who did it said my friends bike would do about 50, but as soon as he got it back he got 60 on a flat!!. He and another friend of mine with an Aerox Max Biaggi 50 had a race and they drew!!!!

An amazingly quick off the mark bike. Upgraded to this from the Formula 50, and am extremely glad I did so! Bought it third hand (perfect nick), and so far have had no problems what so ever with it, apart from a problem with the water pump (knew about it when buying the bike), and am getting it replaced soon (isnt needed- as the cooling system works fine). Only other slight niggle is the leaking coolant- but I think my slight bodge job has fixed that for now. Literally goes 0-50 in around 4 seconds (0-60 in about 8 seconds), meaning I could basically rinse any four wheeled vehicle in the high street. Great brakes too- prevented me from smashing into the side of some 17 year old girl in a Fiesta, smoke literally came out the back of the wheels! Build quality is slightly dodgy (as it is on all Italjets) but it doesnt fall apart whilst at 95mph, so im a happy man. Gulps down petrol!

I had several problems with the Formula 50 Air cooled Italjet. First problem was it had been restricted too much, going 10mph max up hills, second was the spark plug which would burn out every other week, and the spark lead would work itself loose and fall off every 300 odd miles, it was a nightmare. After months of phone calls and angry letters to Italjet, these problems were finally fixed to the extent they can be. Current problems include Dodgy indicators and electronics, aswell as a large crack in the side panel near the petrol cap which appeared mysteriously, costing
