NEW SCOOTER ROAD TEST
SYM JET EURO REVIEW - SYMPLY THE BEST

Can The Taiwanese Manufacturer Crack The Lucrative UK Market? Hannah Rainford Reports.

* What’s It all About?
SYM may not be one of the best known Scooter manufacturers in the UK but they are definitely making their mark. All you need to do is type “SYM” into your favourite search engine and you’ll find forum after forum of SYM owners who love their models to death, ranting and raving that they are best thing since sliced bread.

SYM stands for SanYang Motorcycles, a Taiwanese company who also have subsidiaries in China and Vietnam. After the success of many other Asian manufacturers in Europe, SYM decided to target their product at the European market. A company called Moore Large, one of the UK’s biggest importers of bikes and accessories, took on the job of promoting the SYM brand in the UK along with many other foreign brands.

SYM’s most popular scooter is the Jet Euro, which is available to European customers in 50cc or 100cc guises. It offers great value for money and is stylish enough to appeal to almost everyone. The SYM Jet Euro 50cc will particularly find favour with teenagers and novice riders because of its easy to use controls, yet it remains stylish enough to earn some serious street cred.

* What Does It Cost?
SYM offer two choices on the Jet Euro. Those looking at starting in the world of scootering or just want something less powerful should go for the 50cc priced at £1,399. Those with more experience can opt for the 100cc at a £100 premium.

The 50cc only costs between £5 and £8 to fill up the tank and that should last you fifty miles until you hit the reserve. It also has the advantage of having a petrol-fuelled engine rather than the up-and-coming LPG fuelling system, meaning that you can top up at any filling station. The great thing about scooters is that they are exempt from congestion charging and with the looming threat that this will become compulsory in many city centres, the scooter looks like a good buy.

* How Does It Handle?
The SYM Jet Euro has been designed with teenagers in mind. There are to main types of scooter; the retro Vespas and Lambrettas reminding us of the swinging sixties and then there are the modern versions with aggressive styling and sharp angles. The SYM Jet Euro falls in to the latter category which has become much more popular with teenagers over the years.

You may never have heard of SYM but these scooters are being sold at dealers up and down the country, as are products and parts to go with them. The sales figures are also very encouraging and it seems likely that SYM will become a popular name in the world of scootering.

Mums and Dads looking to purchase a scooter for their teenager will like the idea of a SYM Jet Euro. The 50cc model can be restricted so that the scooter can never reach a speed over 30mph. Once riders have passed the relevant tests and are more confident on two wheels then this can be altered. Even then the scooter will only reach a maximum speed of just over 45mph. The 100cc model, as you would expect, gives you an extra 10mph on top speed.

* Verdict
If you are looking at choosing your first scooter or buying a scooter for someone else then you can’t go far wrong with the SYM Jet Euro 50cc. The speed restriction and the easy to use equipment make the Jet perfect for a keen novice rider desperate to get out on the open road. Those who are more confident in their scootering can upgrade to the 100c model before embarking on a more serious scooter.

If the SYM Jet Euro doesn’t like the model to you, then SYM have an array of other scooters available and they are sure to have something to suit your tastes.

Sym Jet X-Sport
I've got a Sym Jet X-sport moped.
It is still restricted and only hits about 30mph but down a hill I got 38mph. It is a very reliable moped and I would recommend it to anybody For a first bike.

I've got a Sym Jet 50 in red and it looks great without the stickers on. It's also pretty fast for a 50, it takes a bit of time to pick up speed but it does about 50mph on flat once de-restricted and about 63mph down hill only because it's de-restricted and got racing roller plus a Leo Vince ZX racing exhaust. The lights are not very bright but they do the job. And the indicator beep on every flash you can hear it buzzing in your ears. The back light look pretty good to! Overall this bike is very good for the money.
