Kawasaki AR

Hi,
I bought a AR50 about 5 months ago, since then I have changed many parts including boring it out to 93cc, uprating the carb to one off a 100cc bike and I have made an exhaust for it, out of a exhaust off a 100cc soccter (or should I say 100cc load of crap! lol)
The handling of these bikes is absolutly awsome for the age, and they stop quick too. If you modify an AR to the spec mine is at you can get about 65-70 mph out of it.
It cost me £160 to insure (third party, fire and theft)
£350 to buy and another £350 to 'do it up' so they are a cheap bike and will have a standard RS50 for breakfast!
I would recommend an AR to anyone with quite a small budget and only a provisional licence!

immaculate bike, fun entry into cruiser marketplace. Has a very quick de tuned gpz motor that surprise alot of road users. Revs well and smooth engine without vibration.
Lovely looking bike, ideal for the shorter men and ladies such as myself 5'7, as it has a low seta height . Handles well for a cruiser and good economy. Mine has a windshield which helps over in the uk! comfortable seat I rode mine 200 miles home on the first day, good handlebar seating position as well. had for two years now only thing to go wrong has been the battery, bulletproof engines! overall an underated great bike!

For my sins, I am a motorcycle policeman and have ridden BMW's both on and off duty for most of my riding life. I never thought that I would stray away from the good old German thoroughbred until, that is, a colleague of mine rode to work on a borrowed Kawasaki GTR1400. The lines and styling were perfect and as soon as i saw that it was a shaft drive, i simply had to have a go!....
I popped out of Police HQ for a 5 minute spin.... and came back an hour later!. If I could write a list of pro's and con's for the perfect bike then this machine would fill all of the pro's and leave the con's to the competition. From the word go the handling, acceleration, comfort, braking and all round ease of operation were strikingly obvious, kawasaki have finally got it right for a sports touring machine. I think that the fact that they have used the ZZR engine and dynamics coupled with the shaft drive in my mind make it a superb machine for both general commuting and long distance touring. Needless to say within 24 hours of testing this incredible motorcycle I was into the local Kawasaki dealers where I ordered my '58' plate black GTR. I picked it up in october and have now covered 3,300miles. The bike has not missed a beat!. I travel a 50 mile round trip daily to and from work, I ride my '08' plated BMW 1200RT all day at work and I must say it is a pleasure to get back on the GTR to go home. It is one stunning machine. The only points that I would suggest for a would be GTR owner are: To go for the high screen, I am only 5'10" but find the elctric standard screen to be just a little short and require the high screen or a Laminar Lip fitted just to take the edge off for a more comfortable ride. If you consider an after market exhaust, which I personally don't feel that I needed and if I did it would only be for aesthetic reasons, then don't fit it until the warranty has expired because the standard exhaust houses 2 x sensors, 1 in the end can and one in the main body, replacing either of these can effect the smooth running of the standard set up and will of course make the warranty null and void. The bike boasts a power socket on the dashboard and a secondary under the seat in the tail section, ideal for fitting both Satnav and Autocom with the greatest of ease. What more can I say?.... I have no doubt that one day I will return to BMW but for the moment i am more than at ease with the Kawasaki and their latest phenominal sports Tourer.... Go get one now!....

Ive got the 400r, grey import, but was very impressed the first time I rode it, being a smaller fellow, the bike was just the right hieght, and a well looked after example should be very reliable, apart from the obvious cold start which can sometimes take a few seconds, there isnt much power low down, but when you pick up the revs, you'll be going faster than you thought. it can be lumpy on tick over at times, but hey ho, its an old bike, although it is rare to find a good example with low genuine milage.

Ive owned my big zed for nearly 3 years now and it really is the doggs, loads of grunt, easy to flick around and loads of smiles per miles.
slight downers are, small fuel tank/range and the seat is a little numbing after a while, but all in all a great bike.
loads of trick bits to bolt on to make it all your own and will always turn heads where ever you go.
thinking of buying one then DO and visit www.zedoc.co.uk for help, advice and general biking gossip

May one day be a semi-classic. Good points are the retro look which makes it a bit different from the usual naked bike. Bad points are many and really as no bike is without bad points whether you put up with them or not is down to personal taste. I've never done more than 100mph on the 750cc and wouldn't recommend trying as a major amount of wobble kicks in at 100 (and yes I have had the wheel alignment checked). Seat is a little on the hard side especially over long distances. Very low speed handling is less stable than simiilar sized bikes such as the Fazer or Honda hornet. Good used down-pipes replacements are getting hard to find. No new replacement options exist for the original 4 into 2 exhaust and the 4 into 1 Nexus looks horrible!!! I'm considering using the London Chroming Co to restore existing pipes but this will put a serious dent in the wallet!

I have owned a zephyr 750 for 5 years. Basically it is a retro and this is down to taste at the end of the day as to which you prefer. It is a proper middleweight bike for the old school biker. This is for basic motorcycling and for that purpose she is fine. Decent brakes, good acceleration when needed, corners well (at sensible speeds). Let's be honest you can't do 125 mph on a sit up and beg, but she is comfy at 75 on the M6 and will accelerate quickly from that if needed..........but a small touring fairing helps a lot.
Everything is easy to get at for maintenance purposes.
Pads, filters, plugs are all cheap enough.
It is booted with Avon Azarro's.........plenty good enough and seem to be wearing very well. I feel very safe on them in the wet.
Bad points for me are:
Exhaust system rots readily at the balance pipe area...........well expensive to replace with new downpipes (£400+). Most will weld/plate it up at the first signs of rot. When all else fails there is always motad nexxus......but that aint cheap either.........and they dont look right (personal opinion). Keep on top of it by treating/repainting the balance pipe area.
The eagle eyed will note an absence of the offending exhaust in the pic of my bike. I have plated the exhaust and it is going back on the bike soon.
Apologies for the state of the bike. The alloys are not great and will need a lot of polishing to get them back to former glory. I am not a fair weather biker so there is a price to be paid for that. So get the winter salt off asap if you want to keep the shine.
Camchain rattle on start-up is fairly normal for this bike. It is annoying, but it does quieten down once warm.
I think this bike is much maligned compared to the bandits, which seem more popular. But for me it is a good solid bike for the money, and you can pick them up for less than a grand in very good nick.
This bike will do 45 to 50 MPG if maintained properly and ridden sensibly.
It is not an exciting bike for the sports minded, but well worth a look in my opinion as a good getaround bike. It is a good commuter bike in heavier town traffic and over longer distances. I am 6 ft tall and find the riding position comfortable, albeit a little disconcerting at first till you get used to it.
I enjoy riding it, but have not tried it in excess of 100 miles yet, so can't speak for touring capability. It would definately need a screen for that purpose in my opinion.
I hope this is helpful.
