I’ll be waiting for the boos and jeers but it’s time for a not so positive review of the Kawasaki budget twin. I bought my ER-6F six months ago after receiving an insurance payment for my last bike. Of course it wasn’t anything like the bikes value so the reasonably priced Kawasaki seemed the practical choice. Since owning it I have commuted to work, gone on ride outs and spent a long weekend in France. No matter what people say the bike is built to a budget, the fastenings showed furry rusty bits quickly even with liberal amounts of ACF50. The engine when up and running is fine, it can sit at 80 all day but the fuelling isn’t as smooth as most reviewers say. Whilst riding around town there is surging between 3 to 4 thousand revs and often feels lumpy even for a twin. It can out accelerate most cars but when riding with friends you’ll be left behind. My main gripe is the budget (cheap not very cheerful) suspension. The front is not adjustable and the rear only has preload. It is appalling! Check out the ER6 forums and you will see a lot of owners have upgraded front and rear but at a cost of around £700! I can see why people do spend the money as I experienced the bike standing up mid bend if it encountered a bump and the front wallowing under braking. Speaking of the brakes, they work, eventually. Just don’t expect R1 braking. A change of pads apparently works wonders and shouldn’t cost too much. So in conclusion, if it’s a budget bike your after this is the one, the professional and I would hope independent reviewers like them. I can’t agree. Just don’t believe the hype and be prepared to spend some money setting the thing up. As for me I’ve traded mine in…!

NEW MOTORBIKE REVIEW - KAWASAKI ER – 6F

* What’s It all About?
Kawasaki’s latest ER-6f has arrived and this eagerly awaited mid-weight 2008 model looks certain to sell like hotcakes. This is a machine that is designed to appeal to both sexes of all ages and ability. Its sleek, clean contemporary styling should certainly turn heads. UK colours for 2008 include Lime Green and Metallic Diablo Black and whichever hue you choose the ER-6f is an extremely attractive bike.

Kawasaki’s designers have done well to hide the rear footrest hangers so effectively. They’re mounted off the main frame and grab rails are provided for the pillion passenger. The ergonomically efficient instrumentation is clear and easy to read while on the go. There is a digital speedometer underneath the analogue rev counter and warning lights are used for reserve fuel and temperature.

* How Does It Handle?
We’ve talked about the machine’s aesthetics but what is it like to ride? Just about any rider will find the Kawasaki ER-6f comfortable. Kawasaki’s engineers have gone for the conventional option of mounting the handlebars on the top yoke which enables individual riders to roll the bars backwards or forwards to match their personal riding preferences. This compact sports machine belongs on tight twisty road. It’s light at only 178kg, well balanced and very manoeuvrable, and the robust but lightweight chassis and narrow engine help in this respect. The exhaust system is located underneath the bike exiting just in front of the rear wheel and this too helps to provide the Kawasaki ER-6f with excellent balance and handling.

The rear shock absorber is mounted between the Diamond high-tensile frame and swingarm which does away with the need for excess bushes, bearings and link arms. This arrangement reduces the overall weight of the bike and decreases the amount of maintenance required which has to be good when it comes to running costs.

All this technology and design excellence adds up to a bike that handles beautifully. The broad spread of power available makes for an extremely pleasant riding experience especially when riding along meandering country lanes.

The Kawasaki ER-6F’s 650 parallel-twin engine is actually all-new, but there are certain similarities between it and the very dependable Kawasaki ER5 unit. It is however, much more compact which is partly due to the fact that it’s mated to a highly modified, slick six-speed transmission. The Kawasaki powerplant uses an efficient dual butterfly electronic fuel injection system which provides just the right amount of fuel and air mixture to ensure smooth and silky power delivery. The throttle action has also been finessed to offer smooth roll-on and roll-off characteristics. A maximum power figure of 53kW (72.1PS) arrives at 8,500rpm with maximum torque of 66Nm is encountered at 7,000rpm.

Efficient braking is provided by dual semi-floating 300mm petal discs at the front and a single 220mm petal disc at the rear wheel. For an additional £400 you can also opt for ABS for great security.

* What Does It Cost?
The Kawasaki ER-6f is priced very competitively at £4,495 on the road but you’ll pay an additional £400 for ABS brakes. Kawasaki produce a naked version of the same machine called the ER-6n. Do without the fairing and the price drops to £4,295 or £4,595 with ABS.

* Verdict
Stylish, compact and manoeuvrable, the mid-weight Kawasaki ER- 6f has wide appeal. This 2008 model offers superb handling and strong performance at a very competitive price. Kawasaki should have a hit on their hands.

As I girly biker I wanted a light slim nippy bike. The er6-n that I have ticks all the boxes for me. I have called her Zelda,she is very forgiving on my dodgy gear changes but on in a straight line I can get a decent speed out of her.I can just about keep up with my friend on her bike!! I find the ride speedy, responsive,handling is good at slow speeds. When my daughter is pillion the brakes are still good and the handling good too. I love her shes the best bike I have owned.

What can I say I have been riding for nearly 40 years at just over 5ft small the problem has always been getting your feet down. I tried the ER^ at the NEC bake show. The looks first hit me the exhaust hidden away under the belly pan and the single rear unit. Oh so neat. I just had to have one. Took a test ride on the naked bike.Returned to the shop and placed my order.I commute daily with fitted top box to carry my work suit. Simly slips through the traffic into Bham. Neat and nimble. Took it over to IOM 07 what a blast of with the top box and fly over the mountain. Not quite in the JM times but grin factor was a Magic 130. Return trip with luggage not a problem. Have done 13k miles in 2 years just fitted new Battleaxe 021 after a few days of riding on egg shells the magic is back and she again slides into corners..
If you are on the short side give one a try I know you will love it. RIDE ON

This was my first big bike and was chosen after reading several reviews and seeing it in the flesh.
Not to everyone’s taste but to me it looks like a Jap copy of a Ducati Monster but without the running costs! The other reason I bought it was because it was spanking new and cost only £3500 with £90 insurance – second hand bike money!
Engine – Smooth and powerful, easily loose your license but not too mad being an inline twin.
Will pull away in 5th (with a bit of clutch) so for the novice its excellent.

Gearbox – Smooth and precise - neutral is easy to find. Maybe slightly low geared as I found myself looking for another gear in top – keeps you thinking about the speed which is a good thing!

Comfort – Seat is well padded and really low, at 5ft 8” I could easily touch the ground with both feet. I didn’t like the amount of wind blast at speed, I felt like I was hanging on for dear life on a few occasions, they do a screen for the front but I think it looks crap so would put up with the wind or stay off the motorways!

Running costs – mpg was pretty good – all depends on your right wrist! Tax was £60 if I remember rightly and my first service cost £30 so its not going to break the bank.

Looks – I like it – mine was black with the gold frame but the new blue for 2007 looks ace!

Brakes - took a while to bed in from new, I had a few scary moments but one it had done a few miles the brakes were superb, stops quickly and very controlled.

Would I buy another – yes without a doubt, great bike, good commuter as its easy to get through the traffic and good for a blast on a Sunday!

This bike is great easy fun! Plenty of poke but a smooth delivery as it is a twin parallel 650cc. The handling creates confidence as the weight is all low and it is great for pootlin round town or blast down the open road. Trust me at 0-60 in 3.8 it isn't slow!
But you do have to open her up and rev it it for this kind of performance. The looks are great on both the naked or faired, I have the faired and there are a couple of problems. The mirrors are not great unless you want to see what gloves you are wearing and the 06 has a problem with vibration although the new ones don't. But Kawasaki will rectify this free under warranty, just call them I did and she is like a new bike now.
I recommend this to new riders and short people. I'm 6'1" and it is still comfy though I have my legs bent and feet flat a the lights. She turns so well you can filter traffic easily too. What can I say but I use it 24/7 and love it as it is a real all rounder. Looks sporty to.

This is more of a \"first impressions\" than a review, as I only picked the bike up brand new today and have done huge 57 miles on it! I got the ER after riding a 900 Diversion for the 3 and a bit years. I love my Divvy but having suffered a slipped disc last year it’s just too big and heavy. The ER is the complete opposite - small light and very easy to manoeuvre and ride.

I have not had much chance to explore performance as I have to run it in. No more than 4000 revs for the first 500 miles and then 6000 for the next 500. 4000 revs equals about 55-60 mph in top and seems to get there quickly enough even without revving hard (though I suppose that depends on your own perspective of “quickly enough”). At those revs there is a tiny bit of vibration through the pegs, but not enough to be a problem. Considering it’s a parallel twin and I’m used to a lazy in line four it’s very smooth.

The 6 speed gearbox is the best of any bike I’ve owned. It’s very slick, very sweet & very positive. The clutch is very light and the lever is span adjustable (as is the front brake). I’ve had a couple of Honda’s and a couple of Yamaha Divvy’s none of which are known for brilliant gearboxes, but nevertheless the ER’s is lovely to use. That’s a good thing as I suspect that I will be using it a lot more than I’m used to on the Diversion. The Divvy would pull cleanly in just about any gear and any revs. The ER was never going to have that tractability and isn’t very happy below about 3000 in any of the higher ratios. I can’t fault it for that, I just have to adapt to a different riding style.

I’ve got the ABS model but not surprisingly after 57 miles I haven’t had to use the ABS. The brakes themselves feel fine and do what they’re supposed to, i.e. stop the bike. The back brake seems to have a lot of travel in the lever before anything happens, but I expect I can get that sorted at the first service.

I’m about 6 foot tall and I suspect that on a long run I’ll start to find the bike a bit cramped. The riding position is very comfortable and upright, but it has a quite a low and narrow seat that meant for me, that my legs get a bit scrunched up after an hour or so. Kawasaki do a taller seat, but at £200 I’ll settle for stopping and stretching my legs. The fairing is adequate. Most of the windblast was deflected to a point just below my shoulders - enough to make motorway cruising reasonably comfortable. There is a taller screen option as well as a couple of aftermarket jobs, but I doubt I’ll bother. The only other issue in terms of comfort is the exhaust. The underslung can looks lovely and sounds OK too, but it has a cat’ so it gets very hot and is directly underneath you when you’re sitting on the bike. I definitely noticed my bum and legs getting very warm at low speeds in town! It’ll be lovely in winter, but I expect it’ll be uncomfortable in summer.

The mirrors aren’t brilliant. They’re mounted on the fairing and get a fair bit of elbow in them. They’re OK for seeing what’s coming up on either side, but I find it almost impossible to see what is actually behind me. The only way to do so is to tuck your elbows right in and move your head about whilst looking and even then you’d easily miss something. The other slight problem with them is in traffic. They are the same width as the bars, about a foot further forward and exactly the same height as car mirrors making filtering a bit of a challenge – I expect I’ll get used to it.

On the whole it seems a great little bike and so far I’m very pleased with it.
