I have been riding a Thundercat for 18 months and thought it was time for a change. I loved my cat and thought it was awesome. I swapped it for my new Kawasaki ZX6R. One owner from new with 4kms on the clock. It soon became apparent that my cat was slow and heavy. The new Kwakka is awesome, its fast, agile, pretty, comfy, and easy to ride. I hit my cats top speed on the Kwak and still had a gear to go! It feels like i\'m riding a jet fighter. MINT!

I Own a ZX12R in Hyderabad (India) for the last 3.5 years. It is the ultimate and THE BEST machine I have ridden during my riding career span of over 35 years. Started biking with 250cc twin port AJS and during this long span have passed and ridden scores of bikes, but this machine is the ultimate. It is very user friendly and extremely manouverable once it gets in motion.

Kawasaki’s ZX9R has to be for me probably the best ‘real world’ motorcycle out there. Ok so it has been superceded by the awesome ZX-10R now into its second model configuration so therefore could be considered old hat or even obsolete.

When the ZX9R-F2 finally faded from Kawasaki’s new model offerings it was effectively ten years old and had been developed from the B1 through ‘C’, ‘E’ and finally the ‘F’ model. Continuing on from the ground breaking GPZ900R itself developed into an A11 suffix. I lament the loss of the 900cc category offered by Kawasaki. It’s a dying class much like the 750cc class populated predominantly it would seem by Suzuki with their hugely popular Gixer 750.

I have to confess when I first jumped on a ZX9R I was full of anticipation. It was an ‘E’ model and looked shark like and menacing, equipped with the new fox eye headlamp set up. I rode the bike all the way to Snetterton from Sussex for an 8 hour endurance meeting, but when I dismounted I was far from satisfied with the whole package. The front felt vague, I kept thinking ‘where’s the grip’ from the front and the power delivery though full on didn’t feel as mad as I thought. I was thoroughly cynical and disappointed.

I dismissed all of them as ‘not for me’ despite what other owners (of which there were a lot ) told me, And bought a ZX6 J1 which seemed just right as soon as I sat on it.

The first doubt’s I had in dismissing this machine out of hand after one ride was when accompanying a particularly mad Frenchman on a trip to the south of France. He was riding an E1 completely boggo standard other than the addition of a Yoshi race can. The bloke was a demon and in order to keep up with him I had to ride like a nutter that had been let out of the asylum and thought he could fly.

Frenchie reckoned he saw 180 on the clock and I don’t doubt the vieux garcon.

A while later I had the opportunity to buy a C2 model quite cheap due to a few battle scars. It had however a full Akrapovic system, dyno-jetted and wore a set of Pirelli Diablo Corsa tyres. I’m not sure if it was psychosomatic but the front felt planted and the power delivery a lot rawer. I bought it (hey it was cheap) and decided for piece of mind to bung a set of Ohlins springs in the front forks and compliment it with an Ohlin’s shocker at the rear. Bloody hell what a difference. I never looked back.

It was comfortable, fast, sounded awesome and handled reasonably well enough for me to commit to three track days at Brands, Snetterton and Silverstone, humbling some other race focused leather clad track specific heroes

Thus far I have not looked back. I sold that C2 after 18 months and bought an E1 model that someone had chucked down Paddock Hill at Brands. Sorted it out, deftly fitting the Ohlins and the Akrapovic from the C model I had removed before sale, both of which fitted (though if you look at the fitment charts they strictly speaking weren’t the same component) and enjoyed another 18 months of 9 ing it about before I was offered a great price and sold the green meanie, hours later buying another C2 model.

I think the reason I didn’t like them at first was because of (From memory) the Bridgestone tyres that were fitted as standard, they just didn’t suit me.

The 9 is however comfortable equipped with grab handles to make your pillion more comfortable, pretty indestructible in terms of the motor, fast handles well with a bit of tweakage and has an above average fuel tank range (at modest speeds at any rate). Six pot callipers at the front stop well, I favour EBC HH pads or Ferodo of late.

Another great advantage of the 9 (as it is now in relative terms getting on a bit) is the ease of servicing. I don’t feel confident enough to check shims etc, but for minor service intervals, once you have removed the fuel tank, the air box is right underneath and easily removable, plugs are easy to get at, fuel, oil and coolant filters are a piece of cake to change. Dis-assembled and back together in a matter of a few hours. I have always used Pro-4 Silkolene fully synthetic oil. Oil is the life blood of any bike and it definitely pays to glug some of the posher more slippery stuff in its guts

I think I might keep this one, it’s gonna have a few miles piled onto it in the coming months and despite the fact that ‘average’ condition examples hover around the £2,500-£2,995 mark, I like it too much to let go too cheaply.

The closest bike to my 9 that I can think of would be the ‘05/06 Triumph Daytona in terms of size and power. But I haven’t ridden one so can’t say for sure. Might be tempted by an F model in the future if I can find one in the right colour at the right price. Love it!!!!

Kawasaki have been making bullet trains for years. What can I say this is a bullet with wheels on for the black top, with class leading styling.

Compared to the bloated looking Hayabusa and big boned Blackbird the 12’ is assuredly svelte and sporty. (I’ve seen pix of the 2007 ’Busa’ in the press and sure it may ace the 12 in terms of horsepower as well as more importantly for Suzuki the ZZR1400, it still looks like the bodywork has drooped due to being under a hot sun). I’ve seen the mighty 12 hammered on the track. I’ve caned one across France (at it has to be said rather eye ball smearing speeds), I don’t think I have burnt so much fuel in so short a time! But what a ride. My mate spent six months commuting on one and couldn’t fault it as an everyday machine, finally relinquishing it for an alternative bike that didn’t encourage warp speed every time he rode it

The ’A’ models were unrestricted but looked a bit ugly. I have it on good authority that if you try hard enough in the right place you will see an indicated double ton. (Though naturally this is not true speed) The ’B’ models though restricted were much improved in terms of looks with a slimmer top fairing which gave a much sportier impression

Probably the fastest production bike in the world has been relegated into second place in the hierarchy of muscle bikes by one of its own kind, the eagerly awaited ZZR1400. We’ve all yet to learn the capabilities of the new kid on the block, but we do know how fantasticly able this machine is. It is fast, it is comfortable, and it will handle, as well as looking great. It does however lose out in terms of aesthetics over the ’12’ in my opinion, presumably to make it even more slippery and planted.

There are a lot of ZX12’s about now equipped with the almost de-rigeur full Akrapovic systems, (The choice of pipes are restricted for this bike due to a Catalytic converter in the link pipe which transfers heat in a detrimental way to aftermarket bolt on mufflers. I have heard of some probably cheaper options catching fire which gets bloody hot). No doubt power commanders, Usual suspension mods by Swedish guru’s Ohlins, there is no doubt in my mind these equipped bikes are one of the best looking bikes still out there.

What with the current trend of producing sports bikes smaller and compacter, if you are not built like a weasel they are slowly becoming less and less suitable for even the average size person who needs the speed, whilst hoovering a few miles up in comfort with adequate weather protection

Einstein said time was relative to speed, and at the speed of light time will slow to almost a standstill (if I remember my schoolboy physics correctly). Had he been a young man today, Albert could have tested his theories on one of these beauts.

I race and also ride one of these to work everyday. With 27 years riding experience every now and the I think WOW the power delivery on this thing is just crazy! It's like riding a hand grenade. Poor mirrors for the road and little wind protection.
