Suzuki RF900
I have an RF900 94 model , (yes I know the '95 has a better rear shock never mind)!
I think this is one of the best if not the best all round sportsbike i have ever had the pleasure of getting my leg across,so to speak.
I have rode most bikes, had the first Honda Fireblade, (not a bad bike) compared to the RF, just a poor second class. Not the same torque, average handling, awful looking ,need I go on?
Whereas the RF,is a pretty thing, handles like a dream, quick, (so quick in fact it can deal with almost anything no problems at all. I use |Bridgestone tyres, yes tried the rest, ok for touring but I ride this RF to the limit so I need top tyres, hence the Bridgestones what an ALL round machine wish i could buy a new one.

Suzuki RF900
I acquired my RF900 from the widow of a good friend (no, he didn't die on the bike!) Who simply asked me to take it away - for free!
It's been sat in my garage for a few years, so this last week I took it out, washed it, did an oil change, fitted Goodridge brake lines, and pushed the starter button.
Well, I confess that it took a few turns to run.
I'd taken the precaution of draining the tank and carbs when I put it away, so it had new fuel and a dollop of fuel system cleaner just to help wash away any deposits. Now it fires up the instant you press the starter button.
Handling is OK-ish, but it really doesn't like nadgery country roads, but as long as the surface is reasonably smooth there's no problem. Tyres are BT-020s which seem very adequate.
Comfort is another issue. I read lots of comments from folk who declare the bike to be all-day comfortable. I'm assuming that these guys are small or have very short legs. I'm 6'1" with a 34" inside leg. The squeeze to get my feet on the pegs is definitely not comfortable. In fact, it's bordering on the painful. So, I'm about to go the route of footpeg lowering kit, seat raising, and doing a yoke/bar conversion that'll bring the bars about 1.25" up and 1.25" back. This will, I think, make all the difference. Town riding is not this bike's metier.
Mechanically, everything seems very sound. The engine is turbine-smooth. The gear box seems sweet and positive. And, oddly, the standard screen seems to provide me with a good flow of very smooth air that, with my Shoei X-Spirit, induces no buffeting whatsoever. In fact, I can feel the air supporting my chest once I start to get over 60mph.
At 120, there is no pressure on my wrists at all. That being said, I shall be fitting a double-bubble screen when I do the other alterations.
Build quality seems reasonable. The bike only had 4500 miles on it when I got it. There are a few pinpricks of rust on the frame, and on the welds. Nothing that won't be easy to restore. The bike is a very dark metallic green and black, and I haven't seen another of this colour scheme anywhere. It was fitted with a fill (road legal) Yoshimura exhaust system which does make a very pleasant tone without being, I think, too loud.
Performance is very pleasing, the bike accelerating like a rocket. Brakes are very adequate, but I recall that on standard lines there was a significant difference between using two fingers or four on the brake lever.
The gearbox seems to perform faultlessly. I have no idea about fuel consumption, 'cos I'm one of those types who simply fills the tank when it's empty. My suspicion is that the bike is running a tad rich right now, so it's been booked in for a Dyno run and DynoJet alterations if needed.
As a spare bike for the odd blast I think the RF is a keeper.
My normal ride is a BMW R1150GS Adventure, so the contrast is marked. I do think that the GS cornering speed will be higher in most situations. But the engine/gearbox do seem very agricultural compared to the RF's.

just to add a note to the review I did last year. I uprated the front end with progressive wound springs worth doing. and if you want a rear rack hepco & becker do one that fits well so you can fit a topbox.

Hi all what a bike, upgraded from my R-reg RF 600 rv, to this, good God what a bike, sooooooooooooo much power!!! Every one look's twice, to see what she is, brought her from Wales, filled the tank, and 168 miles later and 2 mile's from home the fuel light popped on, well happy with that, she's all standard got to sort the carb's, a little flutter at about 2 thousand rev's, but open her up and 145 mph no trouble, still a little left too. Don't know why so many people over looked this little monster, cheap to insure also, what more do we need (lol), my one little gripe is that she's a little light on the front-end when comeing out of a corner fast. but apart from that it's a big :))) from me

Want big power, comfort, and safe handling? Surprise your mates and buy an RF900R. Despite being a relatively well known bike, many don't realise just what it is capable of. Suzuki quote 124bhp at the crank and 165mph, with only a K&H filter and a Venom can fitted the Dyno report in my garage shows 127.1bhp at the back wheel - not a maga-bike, but very respectable. I can confirm the 165mph top end too (ask the embarrassed chap in the Scooby-doo Impreza, who gobbed-off at me to impress his girl passengers). The suspension may be a budget setup, but as long as it is healthy and adjusted to suit the rider then the bike is capable of keeping up with (or even beating)much newer machines through the twisties - but you have got to be prepared to work hard. At over 6ft 2" and 16+ stone I am running the front with increased preload (2 rings visible) and 1 click down from top on rear pre-load. I loved hearing the excuses from GSXR/CBRR/ZXR/YZF riders when I posted times in the top 25% at Darley Moor and Donnington - and that was on Michellin Macadams! (Don't bother riding on these tyres in the wet). Continental Road-Attacks are a revelation - highly recommended for confidence inspiring grip and quick steering (although with high levels of pre-load dialled-in the bike does tend to shake it's head accelerating hard on uneven road surfaces). Other mods you need? Front fender extender to protect the rad, rear hugger to protect the shock, double-bubble is the best option for an alternative screen - if you are 5'6" or over the OE screen sends everything up under your lid (wind, bugs, rain etc). Hyabusa 6-pot Tokico calipers bolt straight on at the front, but you don't need them, you can massively improve the brakes by fitting braided lines and clean fluid. Take your time bleeing the brakes, including cracking the top union open slightly to tickle more air out. Keep the carbs balanced, and change the oil regulary - semi synthetic oil seems best for a free revving engine and smooth gear changes. Fully synthetic is a waste of money - you get no added benefit. A well looked after RF is the only bike you will ever need. ENJOY!

I had alawys been a fan of sport V-twins, but my TLR had put a stop to that. It was lumpy, most of my mates didn't like the look of the thing and eventually I parted with it before I threw it in the River Tay. I haven't had a bike for a while and decided I'd get back into it once I'd moved from Dundee to Lincoln. I didn't want a twin and I wanted a bike for under £2k to start me off again. I found the ideal bike in the form of an RF900 on a 96 (N) plate. I was aware that it was an extremely underrated bike, but I didn't believe how much so until I rode it home. It was brilliant. The bike is quite clean, with a couple of scratches on the tank and fairing, but nothing to set alarm bells ringing. There is no sign of it being dropped or badly abused and at 23k miles, it's not long in the tooth either. My only real coomplaint is I find the gearbox very clunky, but if I remember right, the TLR was like that too.
Once I'd regained some forgotten confidence, I squeezed into my leathers and set off for a lengthy ride to really get to know the bike. When I gave it some stress for the first time, I was really amazed at how this bike shifted. It is bloody quick! And it handles 10 times better than I thought it would...and to be fair, it handles 20 times better than it's looks permit. I have no intention of parting with this machine for a good while, I'll be keeping her for at least a year and a half, rack up some Scottish miles and then trade her in for a GSXR1000, I think. I would recommend this bike to anyone who has been off bikes for a while or to bikers who want a more comfortable sports tourer. For the biker on a budget, like me, it's great value for money, the MPG is around 35-40 (and I'm 16 stone), but the main factors is that it is so comfortable, it looks a bit different, it goes like shit of a shovel and handles like a dream. It's quite cheap to insure too.

Hi ,bought my RF off ebay and rode it home 400 miles which was a nice introduction to it ,after owning a Pan with with all the weather protection that it gives you ,it took me a few miles to get into the swing of things ,it has a few upgrades on it ,Scorpion can, heated grips external socket for GPS or whatever ,six pot calipers ,but i would like some info on some other things such as tyres as i do a 70 mile commute every day on dual carraige way roads the rear is squared off, also where can i get higher risers and straight bars? The perils of buying off ebay,no brake lights ,when i checked the bulbs in the rear they were different sizes it also has mini indicators that flash quicker than a fiddlers elbow, also no spring in the right hand foot peg,so i have to be carefull with my feet. The chain was brown but i lubed it before i took it home but i will fit an oiler ,is a Scottoiler the best or are there other oilers on the market i could use,any other info would be much appriciated ,just one other thing ,after reading the mpg and miles to the tank i have been getting roughly 130 to the tank before reserve,is this normal?

Suzuki RF900-R, the underdog from the get go due to the overwhelming popularity of the Honda CBR900-RR (Fireblade); possibly one of the most hyped bikes on the road, with a cult following even before tyre touched tarmac.
The RF has stood the test of time and has proved itself to be not only a worthy alternative, but in some ways the better choice (build quality, reliability and repair costs being prime examples).
Would i recommend the RF9 to others ... YES, without a shadow of a doubt. It's just a wonderful bike to ride, delivering 'Exactly what it says on the tin' and without any of the hype given to the Fireblade. For my money the RF9 just ticks all the right boxes: Speed, Power, Handling, Comfort, Running cost ...... etc.
My own RF9 is a little bit special; coming fully loaded with upgrades and additions. This has been done not because of accident or damage, but rather as a minds-eye project gone out of control and seriously over budget. All started by the previous oner, but redone from top to toe on arrival to me.
Where to start:
Upgraded Hayabusa suspension to take the weight of yours truly (not a small bloke) and improve handling.
GSXR1100 forks and brakes (smooth ride / stops on a dime).
Bandit 1200 polished yokes and risers, linked to a set of Redline straight bars/bar ends (metallic red).
Custom seat (lowered) to improve comfort and better fit the copious glutimous-maximous-posterious.
Polished/dimpled custom pegs front and rear (just cause i liked them).
Colour coded Suzuki rims; good quality tyres that work in rain and shine; covered by Suzuki original fender extenders (you know why).
Complete Scorpion race system with colour coded can (sounds so sweet).
Prior to this, the whole bike was stripped (inc the engine) and rebuilt from the ground up (or should i say - frame out) and professionally set-up.
Almost every nut, bolt and fastening on the bike has been replaced/upgraded to a polished equivalent.
* That's my bike: Its not a flashy bike; it's not a new bike; but its my bike and few would pass her if she was in a hurry to get home - lol.
937cc / 130bhp / 165++mph
"Is she for sale" you ask? - Why for the right offer, yes she is - but not cheap!
