Yamaha YZF1000 Thunderace

Mine's a P Reg Thunderace, looks stunning in black/grey/silver.
I've had it for a year and a half, done 5000 miles (now 23K). It's very fast once the EXUP exhaust valve opens at 6000rpm, the whole character changes from a tourer to something much more exciting.
Handling and brakes are just great, its ultra ultra reliable, economical - just one great bike.
Psst it's for sale too, £1650 with new MOT and just fitted rear tyre (puncture, sigh, always garaged, beautiful, call Bob on 07830 146884 (June 08)

I bought an ace 2 weeks ago with a smashed fairing so have streetfightered it till i can come across fairing parts when enough cash available. This is the first yamaha ive owned since my first bike RD250C. I am so impressed with it looks. handling, braking Pillion seat has our lass wetter than an otters pocket, fuel consumption is good roll on the summer (hope for sun peeps)to bet it above 7000rpm in all gears

I've owned my Thunderace for 5 months now, it's been used for short trips to work and back (around 5 miles) and longer trips (55 miles) 3 times a week. Most of this time has been in either, freezing cold ice and frosts, or rain that could sink Noah's Ark! Yet, it's still a pleasure to get on her and ride.

The reliabilty has been absolutely faultless (1 puncture aside, hardly a bike fault!) Although the road salt is having an effect on the fasteners(can you name a bike that doesn't?). I do my own maintenance and it is a bit of a bind to get access to the essentials, oil, filter and coolant levels as the fairing is made up of so many pieces. This could be me being used to motocross bikes though, as it's been a while since I've owned a road bike.

I run Bridgestone 021 tyres and find they last well and out perform the Pirelli's that were fitted when I got the bike, in the wet and slime at least!
The handling of the bike also impressed me. Previously i've owned GSXR's and a VFR 400, and I swear the Ace turns as quick as the Gixer! Although it does take a bit more manhandling! The Ace makes use of a YZF 750 frame, so it probably shouldn't come as too much of a shock though, as these bikes have won BSB titles!

The best bit about her though is her engine. 145bhp may not be cutting edge for a 1000cc bike these days, but it's plenty powerful enough for the road. Pulling away from 30 zones in top, with pillion onboard is no trouble! Yet, give her some revs (8000+) and the exhaust note changes and the world gets alot smaller! (if you can stop the wheelspin in the rain!) 2nd gear power wheelies are no problems either.
All in all, I think these are underated bikes. If you want the latest 1000cc sportsbike and all the pose that goes with it, then this isn't the bike for you. But if you want something that'll rack up 1000's of miles in comfort and still have enough "sportiness" to duff up the the GSXR 1000 owners in their matching leathers, boots and unmarked kneesliders, then give one a close look. With a relatively soft setup, R1 brakes, 37mpg and the grunty lump, there really isn't much any quicker on the roads of Britain.

Thunderace bought this nearly 4 years ago was Red/White/Black. My mate works for Equire Bikes in Bury St Edmunds gave it a good once over and Dyno'd it, fitted a K&N , Rengade can and a Dyno Jet kit now pushing 150BHP. This bike is a vastly under rated machine smooth and easy to ride round town loads of torque no need to gear hop constantly just wind her up. She eats the miles when touring or doing long distances from Cambridge to Northern Germany in 1 run only stopped for fuel once and a coffee (it was cold). Easily keeps up with full on knee down sportsters but dont need to get a new spine or wrists after a run out. Never had a problem with her except a sticky ex up valve Again thanks to mates 2 hr job shes on top form again. Yamaha could have done far more to promote these machines and now really dont have a faired sports tourer. I know the big sales are sports bikes and the R1 was being pushed to compete against the CBR but us poor non Rossi wannabes got shunted again. Sadly they now have stopped the line so no more aces. All I can say I cant rave enough about this bike a really exceptional all rounder does whatever I ask. I thought so much of this bike I was knocked off by a I didnt see you driver (me lights on AGV Kinetic lid with bright orange Union Jack)that I bought the bike back from the insurance she is now going to be a deep blue.

I've been riding 30 years, and this is the best yet. The comfort trade off with the hard edge sports m/cs isn't worth the pain any more. The Ace is lightening quick, torquey as hell, and handles superbly. It makes me laugh when the Blade, Duke and R1 riders and sit and pick holes in handling on modern bikes. Your average "good biker" is still at least 20% behind most production bikes capabilities for the last 10 years. Most sports riders "read " too many reviews. Take an old GS750 or CB750 out for a spin and learn to take control of the bike.
The Ace is more than good enough for all except the very best riders, so be honest with yourself, then try an Ace. It is awesome!

A very fast 'sports tourer' sore legs around the 300 mile mark. Mirrors vibrate around 70 mph (as long as its not got a blue light flashing in them!!) Eats oil, but a lovely ride 2 up. Cornering good with decent tyres. Definately lots of scope for add ons - single seat conversions etc. Better looking than an R1 in my eyes! Enjoy the summer brian

The Thunderace is the most underated bike in a long time . Mine has done 35k and the finish and reliability are without question. On real roads (bumps and things) it will not be beaten by the more flighty R1 and the like, lay the power down out of a bend and watch the gap increase ! It's biggest criticism when it came out was 'it's not focused enough' ! Dream on its a beaut , comfy , mega grip and handling it's the dogs B........

Great alround bike, love it, you can keep your R1's. Owned it about 3 months now and have no plans to change it. It's in yellow and silver with black screen, hugger and undertray its the muts nuts, often seen at rivington hall barn at weekends when out with the boys. No real problems with the set up of the bike just wants to keep going 'n' going, i'll have to watch my licence. Currently running on dunlop D207's after a short spell on Pirelli Dragons - more confidence now i've changed them. Also ride it 40 miles a day to and from work in all weathers once again must say great allround machine.
