It’s not easy living up to the reputation of having the most reliable bike in the world, especially when it breaks down just days after you’ve announced its mechanical supremacy.
Thankfully it wasn’t as bad as previous breakdowns in that I didn’t have to take the engine out! It turned out to be a recurring problem with the dodgy electrics in my fairing/headlight conversion, but a bit of wire stripping with the aid of my teeth, some insulating tape and a piece of ripped up fag packet to keep the wires separate seemed to do the trick and off I went, proud of my quality bodging. Until it rained a few days later and soaked my piece of fag packet, rendering it useless. So a few quid spent on some new fuses and numerous stops later, the sun came out, which allowed me to conveniently forget the problem… until it rains again. I really should fix it properly. Oh and I need to adjust my chain.

In other news, tyres are bloody expensive!! But perhaps that isn’t news to most of you. I have had to get a whole new set, thanks to my rear tyre developing an 8 inch split whilst travelling around the M25, and my front tyre not only going bald, but bulging out in all the wrong places. So two new Bridgestone BT-045’s later and £145 quid seems to have drained from my bank account. But it’s the best bit of money I have ever spent on my bike; the difference between my old, nylon, square, treadless, rear tyre and this new one is just astounding! I can confidently tip into corners without fear of going sideways or completely losing the rear end, which was always a worry, and wet roads don’t faze us anymore either because, no matter the conditions, the tyres will grip all day long and give me drive out of corners rather than spin or slide. Definitely a worthwhile investment for any rider and bike; they look pretty good too!
On a completely unrelated issue, I was riding home from Leicester Square down towards St Georges Circus, in SE1, when I stopped at some lights next to a brand spanking new GSXR 750, hailed as one of the fastest and all round greatest sports bikes out there. So the lights turn green and off he shoots… for about fifty metres before slowing to just below the speed limit. I completely understand the whole safety thing and after all he was obeying the law, but enough is enough! I was in a hurry to get home after a hard shift at work but could not bring myself to pass him. I never can, I quite simply cannot overtake other motorbikes. Regardless of speed, model, or make, I don’t like doing it. This is for a couple of reasons. Firstly I don’t want the rider to think I am a young arsehole on a bike racing around with complete disregard for mine or anyone else’s safety; secondly I don’t want the rider to think it is some kind of challenge, either to their masculinity (or femininity), or to a race; or finally, that I am passing them to make some kind of statement about their riding or their bike. None of these would be the true case.
I appreciate that most other bikes will be quicker than mine given the chance, so I am not interested in racing anyone, I just like to ride as quickly as I can.
I brought this subject up with a wise old ex courier who simply told me to "Do it, just overtake ‘em". And when I think about it, he’s right. So if you see a big, red, reliable GS500 come hurtling past your eight thousand pound sports bike, I aint trying to challenge you, you’re just too damn slow!
