Crash protection specialists, R&G Racing, have developed a new style of paddock stand cotton reel for owners of the 2008 Suzuki GSX-R750, GSX-R600 and Kawasaki ZX-10R.

More than just a requirement for use with the efficient ‘fork’ type paddock stand, the R&G ‘off-set cotton reel’ offers double protection for owners. In addition to helping protect the swingarm in the event of a spill, R&G’s system won’t foul the standard exhaust.

That may sound strange but, despite using the swingarm bobbin mounts laid out by the manufacturers, reports of some makes of cotton reels marking the standard exhaust systems under riding conditions filtered through to R&G. Always listening to their customers and quick to react, R&G were impelled to create their own alternative arrangement, and the results are stunning.

The new bobbin set-up replaces the existing chain adjuster plates and is held in place by the rear wheel spindle. This set-up allows the paddock stand to be attached at the very rear of the bike for general maintenance and won’t interfere with the exhaust.

When it comes to removing the rear wheel, the cotton reels can be swapped from their rear position over to the original swingarm mounts.

The mounting brackets are machined from aluminium while the bobbins are constructed from a high-density Polyethylene (HDPE), designed to wear and not shatter. The particular grade of steel bolts used also helps to absorb impact by bending, rather than snap or twist their mounting points on the bike.

R&G Racing Off-Set Cotton Reels cost £42.54, but regular cotton reels are available for most popular bikes in either white or black and cost £24.99.
