Six and the City
Monday
The gut wrenching, nausea inducing panic quickly filtered through me as realisation hit me; my R6 was gone.
The gap between all the other bikes gaped like a wound. I ran back to the office, shaking. I couldn’t think, I couldn’t dial the phone, I couldn’t string a sentence together. I wanted to throw up and cry all at the same time, it was just a case of prioritising which one came first.
Security rang the local plod shop for me, but I couldn’t even remember my reg number. Finally it came to me and they took the details. The only good thing was I had parked under CCTV cameras and it would all be recorded somewhere.
I gave them this information only to be told that someone would be in contact with me within the next three days.
Eventually, I rang home and broke the news to Hornet Boy. He immediately came to pick me up, only to listen to my heart breaking all the way home.
Tuesday
On the Hornet and slightly more in control of my emotions, I rode past the scene of the crime. I saw Paul, a fellow biker whom I’ve met a few times. Stopped to say hello and told him about the theft. He responded that it would have happened under his security cameras so I gave him my contact details and continued on to work.
Half an hour later and Paul is in reception with stills taken from his CCTV recordings; there, bang to rights – scum loading it up into a plain white van. Less than 20 seconds.
Also, a private taxi driver can be seen standing about 10 feet away. Possibly a witness or an accomplice. I rang the police to let them know what I had found out, "That’s some really good detective work there"…..
Friday
The DC working on my case rang today. She told me that the good news was that it had all been captured on CCTV.
"I told you that", I answered, trying to keep the contempt out of my voice. I obviously did a better job than she did of keeping the total disinterest out of hers.
"I’ve tried to reach this building manager who has the CCTV footage but he’s not answering his phone", she tells me.
"He’s off and not back until Tuesday", I inform her. "Well, I’m now off for four days; I might try and get out next Tuesday to have a look at it".
Tuesday
No – of course she didn’t come and view the footage.
Thursday
Two officers from Walworth visited me today and they’ve got one of the little fuckers! No news on the bike though. Sold it to pykies.
The little shit was currently out on bail waiting sentencing for something else. So big thumbs up to the great British judicial system.
"They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this just cos he’s getting sentenced for something else"
Admirable sentiment boys.
"Any chance you can leave him with me, a few of my big mates and a baseball bat for 10 minutes?" I asked. I also want to tattoo BIKE THIEF across his forehead.
"We would love to, but he goes down for 2 years tomorrow. Sorry, but he’ll get his justice inside"
"Of course he wont, he’ll come out more skilled then he went in"
One of them turned to me and smiled evilly, "Oh no, he’ll learn the hard way. He’s a real pretty boy…"
