I have always been unlucky when it comes to breaking rules, because all the way through my school life it was always me that seemed to get caught. I was just never any good at covering up or looking out for people watching, in fact I was just too honest. And that’s why de-restricting my moped seems like a bit too much of a risk, because I always get caught, and getting caught with a moped that is de-restricted and therefore no longer a moped is quite a big thing. I would certainly be prosecuted for no licence and no insurance and that’s just for starters. Not only that, but if I was involved in an accident and needed to claim off my insurance, if they found out that my bike had been altered, they would refuse to pay up.

Which all makes it seem like it’s not worth tampering with my moped and so sticking to 30mph for the nine months I have left until my 17th birthday seems like the best option; but I hate feeling like the only person who is stuck at 30, and three quarters of a year can seem like a very long time when you are my age. I’m not saying that it is OK to break laws and de-restrict bikes, I’m just saying that if there was a straightforward way to do it on my bike I would have done it by now. As it is, neither me nor my dad can seem to find an easy way without making it obvious it has been tampered with.

In the end I decided that seeing as though I don’t travel a lot on my moped – I don’t use it to go to college and I rarely go to my mates on it – it doesn’t really matter that much to me that it’s not de-restricted. I can wait a few months and if I do nothing to endanger my licence, I can get a beautiful new EXC 125, which is definitely the only thing that is keeping me going. The worst thing is seeing your friends starting to drive cars and ride bigger motorcycles knowing that you still have to depend on a moped for transport. Even if it was a moped that did 80, the fact remains that it’s a moped and it will never compete with a real bike or a car.

There have been many times that I wished I was born back in the 70’s, things seemed to be much better then, not just for motor biking but for life in general (no I don’t mean the drugs). There weren’t all of the big problems that we are always hearing about in the news today, you could go out for a sociable drink without wondering who was carrying a knife and the world hadn’t turned into the messed up wreck of a place it has become; when an old man who shoots a burglar can be arrested for it, there is a problem. (Mind you saying all this, I think my bike is from around the 1970’s so at least I have something from that era). And then there is all this caution in today’s motorcycling world about wearing the right protective equipment and the latest top of the range anti-gravel rash XYZ 2000 kit. If you think back to any time before 1973 many people didn’t even wear helmets! Those were the days when you got out whatever was in the wardrobe, and went for a ride; and it seems that this usually only consisted of a pair of flared jeans and a denim jacket (apart from us northerners, where it was a flat cap and Wellingtons).

Anyway it seems I have reached that point yet again where I have to stop writing, so I wish you all A Very Merry Christmas – don’t overdo it on the drink, and be sure to ride safe.
