Dangerous weather conditions hit UK – Be careful Bikers! - (22/12/2009)

Snow and ice have caused mayhem across the UK and made the roads a treacherous place, especially for bikers. In conditions such as those we’ve seen it’s not recommended for bikers to be out on the roads but sometimes riding is necessary so it’s best to take note of some important tips:

• Follow tyre tracks where possible
• Try to avoid compacted snow
• Try to stay upright when turning rather than leaning
• Use the rear brake
• Get a decent pair of riding gloves
• Maybe even wear two pairs of socks… just keep warm. A warmer body means higher concentration levels
• Consider buying some winter tyres… safety is the priority here
• Take your time!

The lorries have been out in force covering the main roads with grit (which is actually rock salt). Rock salt lowers the freezing point of moisture on the surface of the road, preventing ice from forming and helping to melt the existing ice. However, the gritters can’t cover every area of our vast infrastructure so take care at all times, particularly when venturing off the main roads.

So, keep an eye on the forecasts and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
