A short while before last month's little accident, I got a call from ‘The Dealer’ telling me that he had an offer for me. It consisted of a very lovely import in the form of a Suzuki Bandit 400. Low miles, high revs and cheap insurance. Yes please! The idea of a ‘pocket rocket’ was very, very appealing. More sophisticated brakes, higher revving engine, dynamic street style looks, and better fuel efficiency.
I phoned my Guru for some advice and was told that my only problem could be when I needed spare parts, because it’s an import. Now some people might see that as just a minor problem, but you have to remember that I have been through 3 engines inside a year, spend every Wednesday night fixing something on my bike, and have blown a piston on each of my previous bikes. Critics say it is me, and my effect on my bike, but I put it down to bad luck and coincidence i.e. it was not my fault.
It was an offer I couldn’t refuse, a decision which was compounded when I saw a picture of the Bandit sparkling among a sea of bikes, it’s gorgeous. Okay it doesn’t have a fairing, which I would have liked, and my GS500 is running the best it has done in the year since I got it, but the Dealer and I agree it will be perfect for my needs.
Insurance. Quote after quote came up frustratingly expensive considering I was downsizing from a 500cc. I don’t know whether it was my age or address or the fact that the bike is an import that was upping the price, but it is pissing me off. It's daylight robbery. The companies know that no one my age can afford insurance premiums and so offer you finance options with high interest rates. It’s disgusting and is one of the major contributing factors to the low numbers of young riders on the road. Its solution is glaringly obvious and equally as simple: lower insurance premiums. End of.
Unfortunately in the run up to me getting my hands on the new machine, I had my accident and the whole insurance thing is taking bloody ages, delaying the sale of my bike and purchase of the Bandit. Oh and the dink on my exhaust, crack in my fairing and chip on my petrol tank has rendered my bike a write off which has its own complications. I cannot be without my bike as it is my connection to everything further than the end of my road. The struggle goes on!!
Just so that the Dealer knows, I am still very much in Bandit country and as soon as this sorts itself out I will be round to collect the keys!

As many of you will be aware, British Superbike racer Ollie Bridewell tragically died during practice at Mallory Park on Friday 20th July. He sustained head and neck injuries in a crash at the Esses section of the circuit.
Ollie Bridewell was only 21 but had competed in eight seasons of racing after being brought up in the world of competitive motorcycle racing. I was lucky enough to meet him when I went to the final round of the BSB at Brands Hatch a couple of seasons ago and although it was a very brief meeting the respect that I gained for him was massive, as he was out there competing at the top level — living his, and every other young motorcyclist's, dream.
BSB’s Fred Clarke said: "Ollie Bridewell was a welcome breath of fresh air in this all too frequently, serious world. Very, very rarely to be seen without that engaging smile upon his face, simply to have been in his company, was to gain a treasured memento."
