Q: How heavy is a Yamaha MT- 01?
A: Very.
I think it was Upper (or Lower) Thames St where I found out.
A guy on a black MT-01 had nipped up the cycle lane and as much as I’m loathe to do it – I did the same and followed him 'cos there was a gap up front just before the lights.
However, our path was blocked by a black cab who had pulled over on to the cycle path and put his hazards on (quelle surprise, eh?), and behind the cab, a truck carrying tons of hardcore.
So, there was kinda a gap between the truck and the lead vehicle, caused by the black cab.
So MT chap gets right up in front of the truck, inches from his front nearside wheel. I’m down the side of the truck, but he can see me in his mirror.
Lights change; cab blocks progress, truck moves off slowly, doesn’t see the MT.
I sound my horn in alarm but too late, truck has knocked the MT over.
And now my progress is blocked by this bloody great bike.
No one other than himself to blame, 'cos there was no way in hell that the truck driver could see him as his cab was so high, and trucks don’t have mirrors sticking out of their windscreens at 90 degree angles showing them what’s directly below them to the front.
Not something I’ve ever given any thought to before, but I can appreciate how there are accidents involving cyclists and trucks; because they are so close they are often out of sight.
So, back to the MT – he’s shouting at the driver, who got out, looked confused, didn’t speak English, drove off, and I’m contemplating heroics by offering assistance.
I offered, it was accepted.
All seven stone of me.
I have no idea how we got that beast upright but I couldn’t move for 2 days afterwards.

I dearly love my R6 but there’s no harm in thinking of an upgrade, and to be honest, I’ve been thinking a LOT about an R1.
I really like them.
So, Moto Expo came to my locality and I dragged my biker colleague Gary along with me to look at the cars and bikes.
Had a nose around and found some bikes on the BMW stand. Gary looks around with interest, I just look critical. Man, is that HP2 a fugly bike.
BMW rep tries to chat up Gary and pats the pillion seat whilst turning to me saying; "There’s even room for you"
Gary ducks and covers whilst telling him I’ve got my own bike.
BMW sales man raises a patronising eyebrow and enquires to what I ride
"An R6"
He stops smirking, avoids eye contact and says, "I’ll shut up then."
Probably best.
Wandering around, I find Infinity Motorcycles with a range of sparkling new Yamahas, and to my delight, an R1, which I manage to convince the guy to let me try on.
It’s surprisingly bigger than I thought and even wearing my high heeled boots, it was a struggle for me to bring it upright off the side stand.
(Polished marble floors, metal tipped stiletto heels and R1’s are really not a practical combination, despite the type of picture that might paint.)
Before falling hopelessly in love, nearly dropping it, and finally admitting defeat, I ask my colleague the question that only my sisterhood of lady bikers the world over would truly understand:
"Does my bum look big on this?"
