Yamaha’s then-new 2006 aluminum-framed YZ450F was a fine machine, and a worthy heir to the historic YZ-F line.
The return to a five-speed and power that was domesticated but not de-clawed were highlights of the machine as were the solid feel of the light alloy chassis.
It missed the target in turning and steering accuracy, though, and the riding position made tall guys look like a pocket knife with the blades half folded.
Yamaha calls ’07 a refinement year, but we never underestimate the power of small changes. Forged triple clamps (instead of cast) are more than strong enough for the job, but with fewer ribs hidden underneath, they modify the feel of the bike in a very good way, and even help the steering feel.
A shock, a mere 1.5mm longer is another shot at the turning gremlins, and another hit. The bike rides higher in the rear and puts more weight on the front wheel.

We weren’t as sure on the engine. Yamaha made laudable efforts to quieten the exhaust note, and it worked. The bike is pleasantly subdued sound-wise. A more aggressive cam is in place as well, and it makes the bike very lively from 1/3rd throttle on up, but the engine is much smoother below a third.
It is also reluctant to pull a tall gear when there is traction. If you actually use the five-speed you will like this motor. If you want to do the whole track in one or two gears, you may lament the passing of the ’06-spec engine.

Got my thunderace 4 years ago. A seat cowl & remus viper legal can give it an edge. Pleanty of grunt, goes through 1 lite of oil every few hundred K's. This bike can move but heavy in corners. It would be nice to be able to "flick" it more into bends than drag it over. Hard on rear tyres and I've been using dual compound bridgestones. Bullet proof and a good value sportsbike in a country where bike prices are extortionate.

It is amazing what power you can extract from a 50 or 80 cc engine, and some people will take it to extreme, and over do it when it comes to tuning these bikes up.We bought a 3year old competition YAMAHA BIG WHEEL YZ80,if it had been cared for on the outside, it is usually a fair observation it gonna be good on the inside.Check how much blue smoke appears when starting up from cold, and when warm just see how it sounds and clears when blipping the throttle, if it rattles profoundly from the cyclinder head, my guess it will probably need new rings, and possible new or refurbished sleeve.Naturally if it has been raced you expect this, so check the history and service record if receipts have been kept. Rule of thumb advice, dont jump into a purchase if you or your son/daughter are just excited, it will or could cost you a fortune.Condition is a relection of price so check, and double check, and compare before writing that CHEQUE, although they will probably want cash BEWARE. The machine its self like most other similar bikes KAWASAKI KX60/90,KTM60/80,SUZUKI RM60/80 straight out of the box new, prepared properly, AND KEPT in tip top performance, these will go on for years perhaps the plastic's might need replacing, and occasionally handle bar's or levers, they all have their individual characters, but when it comes down to Racing it,s down to the Rider as much as the Bike. The deal is with this bike later versions had or have electronic ignition, some have electric starts, aswell as kickstarts, Big or small wheel engine wise they are the same, try not to convert it's all extra cost and hassle, if you can avoid it.Reed valve kicks in smartly and you will know it when the powerband hits that G spot moment, dont forget you spend more time out of the saddle on a MOTOX bike so seat should be secure, all nuts and bolts tightened, check wheel bearings on both wheel hubs for play, leaks on forks seals, and rear mono shock travel, make sure Bike is clean when viewed not Muddy, how it has been used, and who your buying from, you never know for sure if this could have been acquired unlawfully, get frame number ! if in doubt, turnabout and walk, sometimes that gut feeling is right.Dealers lap these up, and sell at a tidy profit, so expect to pay £200-300 more fair enough, but there is no warranty given usually.Have Fun, go racing the track is the best place for MX bikes, BUT ALWAYS invest in the Full PROTECTIVE GEAR,the best investment you can make is in Living to ride another day.
