Yamaha Cygnus 125cc Sept '08 (58)
Overall Rating:
Review
My good lady wife recently took delivery of the Yamaha Cygnus, and it's had no problems so far. The design's nice and clean and it offers pretty decent performance compared with some scooters we've had over the years.

Running costs for the Cygnus have also been a real surprise, it's a very efficient model. Storage space has been another major highlight - the Cygnus is great for running little errands around town. All in all, I'd rate this scooter as one of the best models currently available in terms of economy and reliability.

Yamaha TDM 800cc 97/98 (R)
Overall Rating:
Review
I got the chance to ride a Yamaha TDM 850 a week or so I can understand why it never really caught on in the UK. Some people I know look at the Yamaha TDM 850 as vastly underrated and something completely different and while I can see where they are coming from and I did enjoy my ride, I couldn’t be persuaded to buy one.

The engine on the Yamaha TDM 850 is a plus point as it is usable, puts out a good amount of power and is generally solid. The handling is surprisingly good as well, with fairly good suspension and brakes making it a true sports roadster. I’ve ridden the Ducati Multistrada and the Yamaha TDM 850 is similar in feel. The instrumentation is fairly sporty and works well, as do the mirrors and the switchgear. In terms of reliability, Yamaha has never been top of the tree and although the TDM 850 is better than others of the era, it still is not that great and will require constant looking after. One bonus that the Yamaha TDM 850 does have though is that its quite good for tall riders.

Yamaha YBR 250cc Sept '07 (57)
Overall Rating:
Review
If you are looking for a motorbike that manoeuvres easily through the city and has more oomph than a 125cc then you might find that the Yamaha YBR 250 is perfect for you. I personally like a bike that has a little more power but I really enjoyed my ride on the YBR.

The Yamaha YBR 250 is reliable and it looks good so there isn’t much more you can ask of this simple motorbike. The five speed transmission engine is perfect with digital ignition. And the power and torque this bike offers is enough for any commuter but will not be sufficient for a power hungry biker.

Another good thing for the commuter about the Yamaha YBR is it has the largest fuel capacity in its class at 19 litres. If you want a bike to commute on then I would seriously recommend this Yamaha.

Yamaha XT 600cc 85/86 (C)
Overall Rating:
Review
I feel a little bit sorry for the Yamaha XT 600 because it is a dual purpose motorbike. Back in the day when there were no specialist bikes then there might have been a place for the XT but now it looks a little out of place. The Yamaha XT 600 is pretty much a jack of all trades and so you will find this bike not suited perfectly to anything. There is still a place in some people’s hearts for dual purpose bikes but I struggled to understand it when I rode the Yamaha XT 600.

The styling of the Yamaha XT 600 is very much like a dirt bike. Around town I thought that the XT was a fun little ride but it did tend to lug around corners. If you want a bike to commute on then the Yamaha XT is pretty good because it is not phased by potholes or cobbles and any other road hazards.

I was not at all impressed with the Yamaha XT however when I took it out of the town. Once you reach a steady 60mph the handlebars shake and you will find yourself vibrating. The seat is also really hard and gives you virtually no support at all.

If you want an off road explorer then the XT is excellent. You will be able to ride through streams, climb steep hills and have some fun but you have to be careful because it is quite easy to lose control of the bike.

Yamaha TRX 850cc 97/98 (R)
Overall Rating:
Review
The Yamaha TRX 850 never really sold well but I’ve recently had the chance to ride one and I thought it was underrated somewhat and had a bit of character to it. The Yamaha TRX 850 uses a V-parallel 850 engine that has quite a lot of grunt, the suspension was a bit bouncy but it still handled fairly well and the brakes were pretty good as well but I have been told that the brake callipers are prone to seize when not looked after and serviced well. From what I’ve been told, the same is true for a lot of the bike in that it needs to be very well looked after otherwise it is prone to corrosion.

Comfort is fairly good on the Yamaha TRX 850 but only for the rider, it gets more comfortable at speed and extended periods in town can become tiresome. Although the Yamaha TRX 850 is quite a good bike to ride for a bit, I can understand why it didn’t sell so well. If you find one for a good price then I would say go for it but otherwise there are better bikes out there.

Yamaha MT-03 660cc Apr '09 (09)
Overall Rating:
Review
The MT-03 is one of the best bikes I have ever ridden. I absolutely love this bike and if I had any spare cash then I would definitely buy one. This motorbike oozes Yamaha thinking and is a true style icon. If you want to bring an element of fun into what you ride then I would definitely say that the Yamaha MT-03 does this effortlessly.

I think this bike comes into its own when you ride it in the city. It is light and copes well with the twists and turns the city brings. The engine is compact and has excellent power and thrust at any number of revs. Because the wheelbase of the Yamaha MT-03 is quite short the centre of gravity is focused allowing excellent control and traction whatever the roads and conditions.

I love the agility of this bike and the street sports riding feel it gives you as you travel through a city.

Yamaha XJ 600cc 83 (Y)
Overall Rating:
Review
A really old school bike nowadays, but brings back plenty of memories of my early riding years.

The speed of this bike was the real surprise, it manages to move up through the motions really quickly. As a young rider, I always appreciated the seat and handling of the XJ, made the learning process a whole lot easier and really comfortable.

Sadly, I guess this bike will only appeal to the purists browsing the second hand market, as I can't say it's really a 'must own' bike of the era. But it's got undeniable charm and offers spirited performance. If you're offered the chance to try this bike, give it a whirl - it may just exceed your expectations.

Yamaha TDM 850cc Apr '99 (T)
Overall Rating:
Review
If I had to assign the TDM a label, I'd call it an 'unsung hero'. It's definitely one of my favourite bikes from the 90's period. The TDM looks pretty good and the fairing's decent, especially in comparison to some other bikes I've taken for a spin that have been lacking in that department.

Not a massive fan of Yamahas in general, but would mark the TDM out as one of their better efforts.

More thought in terms of the rider seat would have been appreciated. Found few setbacks in terms of reliability, whilst the brakes are more than adequate. It's longevity where this model really stands out though, reckon very little work is needed to keep this bike in top shape for several years.
