When I was 16(20+ yrs ago),the bike to have was a RD125LC powervalve.I had a black and red one back then, total fun, good handling and reliability.
About five years ago I decided to get another one but couldnt find a black one for love nor money. So I settled for a red'n'white(totally original)one. As soon as I could, the standard was replaced with the inevitable "Micron",the performance changed straight away from being a crazy whippet to a screaming greyhound. All these new fancy cagivas, aprilias etc didnt know what hit them. And until they show any signs of being a threat to the RD,I wont bother with any of the other mods that you can do with these old classic devil worshippers.
This all probably sounds quite sad, hearing a 37yr old rant on about a little 125,but the fact is that 4yrs ago I took and passed my bike test and have owned a gsxr600 and am now riding an R1.My RD takes pride of place in my garage and will only come out when I see a worth while challenge,Im also unlikely to sell her,cuz no other bike has given me so much fun, memories than the RD125LC YPVS past and present.KEEP THESE CLASSIC PIECES OF HISTORY ALIVE.Happy biking......

The BMW RT/GS is your Cadillac – nice ride, lot’s of toys but agricultural under the skin. The 'Pan' is your Roller – Super smooth, Super tanker. Then comes the FJR, your Bentley Continental GT! A discreet, ballistic missile with handling, quality, comfort and style. You're love it!

I've had it for 3 years now and have been very pleased so far.As an OAP & a BOF I needed something not too heavy, handles well, reliable & comfortable.I bought this from a car garage,it wasn't in the best of nick but I had read the reports and the Fazer was well recommended by all and sundry. It has been all that I hoped for & more:
It has a comfortable seat but was a bit slippy and I kept squashing my n**s till I adapted! The sit up & beg handle bars are perfect,no aching wrists, hunched back, creaking knees and the fairing kept the wind and rain off to some extent but still buffeted at higher speeds.I have done 200 miles non stop without too much discomfort on more than one occasion. In fact it seemed just made for me,I am 13 stone and 5ft 9ins.It is quite a forgiving bike, handling is good and it can be thrown about with gay abandon, goes round corners and where I generally want it to go.It is not too heavy at approx.180kg;I know because I picked it up when I dropped it whilst doing a tight U turn trying to park it on a field.Thankfully no damage except my pride.
Reliability has been no problem at all,it has had routine services when required at reasonable costs. It is bog standard,I dont believe in performance enhancing ,loud illegal exhausts etc.Yamaha know far more than I do so why muck a good thing up.I have fitted a hugger,Scott oiler, mud flap, crash bars and a Givi rack:sensible and practical items.
Performance is more than adequate,it pulls well when
accelerating in lower gears but really takes off when you hit 8/9000 revs.I have never, ever red lined a bike so I don't know what it is like to scream it.I go out with 4 friends regularly, all with bigger bikes and much younger,I am content to stick at 80mph,occasionly touching a ton (125mph twice).I am never far behind and ride within my ability.MPG is brilliant,52+ giving over 200 miles to a tank.It still has good old fashioned carbs which have never gone out of balance.
The brakes are derived from the R1 and are more than adequate for my needs but there again I have never had to slam on so I don't know what to expect when it it is dirty underpants time! The suspension is firm but doesn't throw me off when going over bumps.
The gear box is notchy and goes with a clunk when starting off but is nice and smooth when on the move and combined with a sweet clutch.
Running costs are reasonable, servicing not too expensive and so far has been consumables.I got 8500 front & 7300back from Bridgstone tyres I fitted.Chain & sprockets were fitted at 15000miles.It has passed the MOT each time but an advisory notice was given this time to say brake pads are due for renewal.
The overall finish is okay but needs TLC over winter.Fasteners fur up,down pipes, frame go rusty and brakes seize up if not attended to.Surprisingly the body work has kept its colour, blue, and shine very well but the engine paint, black, has flaked off.
I have been back on bikes for 14 years after a break of 23 years and these Japanese bikes are far superior in every way over the old British bikes;and so they should be;I have been very happy with my Fazer and would recommend one to anybody but it doesn't quite match up in desirability to my VFR I bought new in 1998 and had for 5 years.

Yamaha SR 125cc Apr '99 (T)

I've had my SR 125 for a year. It got me through my CBT and test and has served me well in my first year of riding, often giving me 90 - 100mpg of fuel efficiency.

It's reliable and accommodating of a learner's mistakes. Its only downfall for a learner is the slightly wide clutch handle: I found it a little tricky at first to get any fine clutch control and this will be worse for female riders with smaller hands.

Now I've been riding for a year I'm finding the lack of power a problem. I'm on motorways for some of my commute to work and 55 - 60mph is about the top speed without a struggle. That's not the bike's fault; it's just time for me to move on to something with a bit more power.

After a varied bike history over 15 years I brought a 2002 model R1. This is my 2nd R1 as I had previously owned an original 1998 model and later a Ducati 996S.
Making the swap back to an inline four was a bigger change than I'd imagined as the Ducatis twin engine delivered power so well from low down.
However my choice was made and I quickly refreshed myself with the R1 with happy results.
The 2002 fuel injected engine is so smooth and revs cleanly through the range providing a useable spread of power which can be used confidently without getting into too much trouble. I fitted a Remus Titainium exhaust system which releases a few extra bhp but I really fitted it for the beautiful crisp note and stunning looks. The build quailty is also top notch.
As with previous 'R' series bikes the bodywork fits well and is simple to remove for the purposes of cleaning etc, not a huge amount of storage room but then it is a no compromise sorts bike.
So back to the important stuff, Handling.. well the 2002 R1 lives up to it's reputation and is at home flowing through twisty A roads however it really comes into it's own on track. I still ride mine on its original suspension settings and the bike holds it's line beautifully. I run Pirelli Diablo Corsa 3s which give great feedback and are sticky enough for fast group track day riding. If I had to critise one thing with this bike it would be that the front end is still very light and when really putting the power down in low gears the bar may twitch a little. This was the same with the 1998 model but probably depends alot on your riding style. Either way this can be quickly cured by fitting a steering damper. I haven't as I like the feedback through the bars.
The brakes are still fantastic..enough said!
Finally.. looks! Well in my opinion the 02/03 model looks sharp clean and lightweight. It still has those intimidating sloping headlights and the addition of the slimline led rear is sharp and aggresive.

I enjoy riding this bike and even though there are newer, lighter and more powerful versions around, in the right hands it is as good as any of them.
My bike has the following:
2005 Rossi Valencia Paint Job
Renthal Grips + Sprockets
Remus Titainium Exhaust with Harris Hanger
Tail tidy and coloured undertray
Pazzo racing brake levers
Quick action throttle

Being a bit of a cheapskate I opted for a restricted test so until my 2 years are up this bike is restricted to 33bhp.

I had looked at many bikes but kept coming back to the Fazer as the only downside in reviews seemed to be its thirst for fuel. I've clocked 160 miles from full before chickening out & filling up again so not sure what you'd actually get. The fuel dial is dependable on whether your facing uphill or downhill & can go from quater tank to full & vice versa within a few meters.

The engine is responsive & ticks over lovely, having owned it since April I've never yet had to use the manual choke to get started.

Many people will scorn at my 33bhp restriction but the Fazer still does 100mph which is enough to get you banned on UK roads. The bike seems quite heavy so I guess that's good for a newbie to get used to handling.

Image wise the bike isn't a head turner but then that's a good thing. Roll a new sports bike onto your drive & you'll get noticed so better have all your security top notch cos people will want it. I live in a rough area & thus far (touch wood) my Fazer has been safe in a side alley with a flimsy wooden door. Seems to stand up well to UK weather despite the relative neglect (cleaning's really not my thing) I've given it.

Brakes are apparently off a R1 which you don't notice on day to day riding but on going into a corner too fast I applied them hard & they hit hard, worth bearing in mind if you want to stay the right side of the handlebars.

Had to change the battery this week which with my lack of bike knowledge I was dreading, however turned out to be a doddle on the Fazer so hoping other maintenance proves as easy. All in all glad I went for the Fazer. I intend to derestrict it & keep it after that. Sadly I'll probably be its last owner as I intend to keep it until it doesn't go any more.

I'm on ny 4th R6, all have been '99 models, sold em cos I needed money, or fancied a change. But I keep coming back because they tick all the boxes for me. I use the bike for track days, touring, work on occasions (instructor)and having fun. I have never had a breakdown, other than dropping in the wet at silverstone - but even then the crash bobbins did the job - only the right hand engine case was broken, and a scratched belly pan.
The handling is fine, my current one was set too hard, I just changed back to standard settings as per mr. Haynes, and its fine. I use metzeler racetecs or Dunlop 208s. One tooth smaller on the front sprocket creates more fun and less front tyre wear :-)
I wouldn't recommend one as a 1st bike after test, but there is no better value for money bike out there, in my humble opinion. I have ridden 05 and 07 models, which are even sharper, even a little too clinical and perfect. But for £2000 a '99 model is great, and I cannot justify spending at least twice that to upgrade to the newer models. Sports bike on a shoestring! Go for it, but not as a first bike, too lively for the inexperienced.
