BOUGHT THE XVS1100 VSTAR CLASSIC NEW FOR CASH IN MID 2006 PART EXED MY VIRAGO 1100 FOR IT AS MY WIFE WAS FINDING IT HARDER TO GET ONTO THE VIRAGO WITH HER DISABILITY AND THE XVS IS A LOT BIGGER THAN THE VIRAGO EVENTHOUGH IT USESES THE SAME ENGINE THAT IS MADE TO LOOK DIFFERENT BY COVERS OVER THE ENGINE.PERFORMANCE WAS WORSE THAN THE VIRAGO GETTING OVER 100MPH WAS DIFFICULT [THE VIRAGO DOING 110MPH] BEING A LOT MORE HEAVY THE HANDLING WAS NOT AS GOOD AS THE VIRAGO BUT IT DID LOOK FLASH THEN AFTER TWO YEARS I HAD TO PUT NEW TYRES ON BOTH WHEELS A TWO HOUR JOB ON THE VIRAGO. TO GET THE BACK WHEEL OUT OF THE XVS YOU HAVE TO USE A HARLY/ QUAD BIKE LIFT THEN TAKE OF THE REAR FOOTREST COMPLETE WITH BRACKET THEN THE BRAKE CALLIPER AND BRACKET THEN UNBOLT THE DIFF FROM THE SOFTAIL THEN LIFT THE BIKE HIGH ENOUGH TO BE ABLE LOWER THE REAR WHEEL COMPLETE WITH DIFF AND DRIVESHAFT DOWN AND OUT WHEN THE AXEL IS TAKEN OUT YOU CAN THEN TAKE THE DIFF/DRIVESHAT OFF THE WHEEL AND CHANGE TYRE YOU THEN REVERSE THE WHOLE SEQENCE HALF A DAY FOR THE BACK WHEEL ALONE SO IF YOU DO YOUR OWN MECHANICS GO FOR THE OLDER VIRAGO 1100 AND HAVE A BETTER BIKE

THIS IS MY SECOND XJ900F SHAFT DRIVE YAMAHA THIS IS A BETTER BIKE THAN THE LATER XJ900S EVEN THOUGH THAT IS A GREAT BIKE AS WELL THE XJ 900F IS FROM THE FAMILY OF XJ SHAFT DRIVE BIKES ie XJ650/700/750/ AND SECA MODELS BUT STYLED FOR THE BRITISH MARKET SO IT HAS A COMFORTABLE RIDING POSITION WHICH IS NEEDED AS THIS BIKE IS VERY CAPABLE OF LONG RANGE TOURING DOING 190 MPG BEFORE IT HITS RESERVE AND 30MILES ON RESERVE AT LEAST. A TOP SPEED OF 142MPH TOP GEAR DOWN TO 30 MPH AND ALL THE WAY TO TOP SPEED WITHOUT CHANGEING GEAR IT HAS A VERY SLIGHT ROUGH PATCH BETWEEN 4,500 AND 5000 RPM MY FIRST ONE HAD THE SAME PATCH BUT I FIND 90MPH CRUISING JUST ABOVE THIS PATCH AND 65MPH JUST BELOW. VERY CHEAP TO RUN AS TYRES ARE CHEAP ALL SERVICE PARTS ARE EASY TO GET HOLD OF STILL. VERY COMFORTABLE FOR A PILLION GREAT FOR ATTACHING HARD LUGGAGE TO FOR THOSE LONG TOURS.CARBS MUST BE BALANCED USING THE YICS TOOL TO GET ACCURATE RESULTS BUT NOT NEEDED TO BE DONE VERY OFTEN AND MY FIRST XJ900 ONLY NEEDED TWO SHIMS CHANGED IN 96000 MILES I STILL HAVE THEM TO SO GET ONE IF YOU WANT A GREAT CHEAP TO RUN ALL ROUND TOURING MOTORCYCLE HAVE FUN RICK

Review
These bikes are awesome, one of the best 600's Ive owned.
These bikes are known to be a bit twitchy, but honestly I dont think they are.
The 2002 R6's were the last year of the carb models.
The power is 120bhp with 68.1nm Torque,
Seat height is a standard 820mm (32.3 inchs)
Dry weight is a light 169kg and comes with an ok 17 litre tank - as for the mpg this i find very good and is on par with my old CBR600F which are known for being economical.
This bike is has been very reliable for me and would recommend it to anyone.
The Pros I find are
Digital Speedo
Switch between MP/H and KM/H
Comfortable
Brakes are great
Handling
Perfomance
Modern styling
Cons
Slow Manouvers can be tricky for the inexperienced
Very little space under the pillion seat
Servicing items could be cheaper
Spark plugs a bit hard to get at
My legs - I am 5ft 5 and could just touch the floor on tip toes but am fine on one foot at lights but I cut the seat 1 inch and is much more comforting.
Common 2nd gear slip on 1999 - 2001 R6's, loads were recalled so check this in the history.
Thanks for reading

After my Thunderace the FJR is wonderfully comfortable for one or two as expected. But I didn't expect it to be sharper handling than the Thunderace (which felt a bit heavy on the steering), feel pretty much as fast, return over 50mpg average, and look sooo cool (in blue and silver). Colour coded panniers are disappointingly small and scratch easily, but everything else is good. I noticed one review saying that the shaft drive makes powering out of a corner unwise - I don't know what's wrong with that bike, but mine is a dream under heavy power out of a corner. As others have said, power delivery is turbine like and very impressive. Mine is the model with the automatic clutch and frankly I wouldn't bother. The bike feels quite heavy to manoevre - much more so than my beloved old FJ1100 which I had a small mishap on.....

I love this bike to bits.
There are other bikes I wouldn't mind riding but I'd always want to come back to this one!
It is a great all-rounder: quick enough to be fun, good handling and loads of punch out of bends. At the same time it is comfortable on long journeys, handles luggage/pillions with ease, great on fuel and has always been totally reliable.
It has a few faults: the lights aren't the best, fuelling isn't great when coming off a closed throttle (you soon learn to avoid it) and it can feel a little "top-heavy" to wheel around but other than that I struggle to think of anything I don't like about it.
I love the torque that makes the bike so easy to ride, you can go fast without effort, hardly needing to change gear if you are lazy like me!
The riding position is great too. Very relaxed which means I can ride all day without my dodgy knees giving me pain. You can have a great view when riding through town but the roomy seat also allows you to hunker down more when pushing on or on the motorway. If you do a lot of motorway journeys then a touring screen comes in very useful as you can ride sitting upright at silly speeds while you need to crouch a bit to avoid windblast with the standard.
My only visits back to Yamaha have been for servicing and the throttle position sensor recall that affected many Yam's. The bike itself hasn't missed a beat.
Fuel economy is amazing for a big bike. I get 45mpg plus on my daily commute. On a run I can get 60mpg plus depending on speed. If I keep to 70mph on the motorway then I can turn in 70mpg! Even an average speed of 90mph turns in around 63mpg. No matter how hard I thrash it I always seem to get over 44mpg. Frankly, I think that is awesome.
If you are a real rider (not just a sunny, Saturday afternoon specimen) and can only afford one bike, the TDM900 should be it.

Had this bike for two months now, good buy off ebay. Loved it when i first got it,changed from a runner 125 twist an go, mistake!!!!
The gilera was by far a faster bike, thought that the Virago would be a little better than it is (55mph cruise)i had 60 out of it the other day but that was down hill, accelleration is pants. I paid £100 for some thunder pipes which are straight, i was told this would make the top end better and accelleration quicker, nothing. Needs a bigger engine.
I am now going to try and sell it and get something with a little more speed.

I bought my old xs250 special approx 6 months ago off Ebay. The sellar had stated that it had a few problems including an occasional sticking throttle and that the photos made it look slightly better than it was. As the bike still had 2 months tax & mot I decided that I would get a lift from a mate and ride it the 60 miles back home. Imagine my horror when I finally got to see my dream machine and discovered it's real condition. The forks were badly pitted and leaking, the engine would only fire 1 cylinder, the petrol tank was almost corroded through in several places and the back tyre was as bald as a coot. I could see that the bike had potential so I parted with my hard earned cash and began what would prove to be a diffcult journey home. A huge amount of work was needed to make useable for the summer but I easily found all the parts again Ebay. The bike will have a full rebuild over the winter months in time for next spring including a 400cc top end conversion to give it a little more grunt. Having ridden the bike all through this wet summer I am delighted to say that it is an enjoyable ride and gets as much attention as any other custom bike.
