Yamaha Fazer 600cc Sept '01 (51)

Review
I bought my secondhand Fazer a few months ago and am completely in love with the machine. For my 30 mile (roundtrip) daily commute, it is the perfect tool. I get to play boy racer on the weekends and can assure you lot that the 90 horses can dirty your smalls over 8000rpm. Like others have said, the bike feels sluggish under 6000 rpm and there are harsh vibrations at 7000rpm (conveniently motorway cruising speed). The saddle also does not work as well as it should. And yes - the lights are rubbish. But for a daily commuter and weekend rides with your girfriend as pillion, I honestly think this bike is hard to beat. And it is cheap. And reliable.

Bought my 1 owner, 5000 mile fazer 2 weeks ago and have already covered over 1000 miles. After all the reviews I was expecting this bike to blow me away after a '78 BMW and a '96 DR650, but I was initially disappointed. Why?. Seems to be a bit bland all over, you need to ring it's neck to make it move but the worst of all is engine vibes @ 6-7000 revs (70-80mph aprox in top), NOT GREAT FOR MOTORWAYS!. However the bike does everything you ask of it, and it's good points are growing on me...

I've had the bike for 6 months this is the 2003 model with the fazer 1000 fairing. cracking bike it will plod round town with ease but get the revs up on an open road and it takes off like a rocket and has great handling to boot. Ideal first big bike. Only a few slight niggles to mention, has the usual Yamaha tractor type gear box and with doing around 100 to work a day I find my wrists start to ache after about 70 miles of motorway driving. But still look forward each day to ride home.

Compared to all the hype in the bike magazines, this bike was a total let-down!! I expected a bike that I could do a bit of scratching on. HA!! Instead I got soft suspension, an engine which was too powerful for the poor chassis, and brakes which overpowered the crap suspension & chassis. I got this bike really out of shape a few times without trying, not very confidence boosting. This is a commuter bike with a powerful engine, not a sports-tourer bike!! I wouldn't like to tour on it or do a track day on it. It is now sold!! On the upside it is good for wheelies!

Decided at the age of pensionionable maturity to go for it. Hence the Fazer, a brilliant choice. Light, chuckable, responsive, and brakes that cope with 60 plus reflexes. But I`ll go for the 1200 - residual commonsense prevails.

Bought the bike from new in 1990 to replace an FZ750 and was so good that I kept it for 9 years before selling to buy an R1. Exup was a better bike than the R1 as had better gearbox, real world stability and very equal power. R1 has the looks and the engine revs cleaner but they are simply too damn common. Had the R1 for just 1 year then swapped to Triumph T'Bird sport (an excellent bike with loads of character) in an attempt to protect my license but have just bought my original Exup back from my brother and am looking forward to re acquainting myself with the old bike and giving some R1's a shock. Exup has had one off paint job, polished & lightened frame, YZF 750 mirrors, raised rear sub frame, Goodridge brake hoses & R1 calipers, Maxton suspension mods f&r, carbon race pipe. Would like ideas for shedding some weight?

Would just like to say that after 4 months of owning the new Fazer 600, that I am very happy with it!! Over 200 miles on a tank of juice, in comfort, and speed!! I fitted a Meta alarm, belly pan, Givi rack, Carbon Can Co. race exhaust which sounds VERY NICE!! It's Powder coated, and matches the bike perfectly in blue!! I do lots of instructing on the bike and find it very comfortable for all day riding. I rode a Fireblade before I bought a Fazer. This 2002 is my second one! I wanted the new model as I liked the looks more. The lights are great on this model, and have no problems keeping up with most bikes!!

Firstly let me say this. BUY ONE - BUY ONE NOW!!< >Okay now that's off my chest I shall tell you about my 2002 Fazer. I went to my local yamaha dealer planning to buy a 'character' bike like the secondhand W650 he had on display. One test ride of that was enough for me, and Paul persuaded me to test a secondhand Fazer instead. When I came back from that ride I just had to have one on the spot. mine is the updated model with the 1000cc look-a-like fairing.< >This is one fabulous allrounder. I don't know if it is a sportsbike, tourer, commuter or what but it is brilliant to ride and can handle anything I can throw at it with a contemptuous "is that the best you can do?"< >This bike can potter round town at 30mph in comfort (more than I could say for any bike with clip on bars), but get that motor above 8000 revs and it goes ballistic! You can almost hear it crying "beat me beat me call me doris!(ahem). Acceleration is smooth but powerful.< >Handling is sublime, just think it into a corner and it cranks over, and over and over. I am not a hard rider by any means but it brings out the hooligan in me sometimes. Grip from the tyres is tenacious and so confidence inspiring.< >Comfort is excellent for me. The seat is comfortable and I get no aches and pains from any of my joints or back (old injuries I'm afraid) The only bike I've owned which does that. This matches up well with an enourmous, by bike standards, 22 litre tank which gives 200 miles plus range. This can really speed up your average journey times when touring as it means less stops for fuel or bum ache.< >On the fuel consumption front, I have to say I'm a fraction dissapointed. I stick to 70-90mph and average 52-47mpg, which is less than my GSX750F. I think the overall lower gearing is responsible (6000rpm at 70mph on the fazer, 5000rpm on the 750).However the trade off is that super smooth and swift acceleration when you twist the throttle.< >Finish I can't really comment on yet as I have only had this bike for three and a half (glorious) months, but it seems good. Paint is thick and well finished, and there are no rattles or shakes anywhere. I plan to keep this bike for a good long while so we shall see.< >Until I bought this bike I had been riding a Burgman 250 for a year. great little machine, but something was missing from my riding. Well it is back with interest now! The only bike I have owned for more than a couple of years was my old GS500 (review elsewhere on this site) which I had for 6 years and loved every minute. I can see the Fazer 600 being that sort of bike. I cannot think of anything I would want to swap it for and expect it to be a long term love affair.< >My neighbour next door but one is Ronnie Smith (Performance bikes test rider and all round nutter/racer dude). He reckons the Fazer 600 is about the best all round road bike you can buy, and who am I to disagree?

Brilliant bike. I dont know what people here are on about no power low down, compared to a tuperware 600 - it's got shedloads of low down grunt. First of the 03 bikes, just colour changes and a tuning fork logo on the tank. Can't fault anything with it, got the suspension dialled in to suit even my 15 stone weight no problem.
