Yamaha TRX 850cc 97/98 (R)
Overall Rating:
Review
The Yamaha TRX 850 never really sold well but I’ve recently had the chance to ride one and I thought it was underrated somewhat and had a bit of character to it. The Yamaha TRX 850 uses a V-parallel 850 engine that has quite a lot of grunt, the suspension was a bit bouncy but it still handled fairly well and the brakes were pretty good as well but I have been told that the brake callipers are prone to seize when not looked after and serviced well. From what I’ve been told, the same is true for a lot of the bike in that it needs to be very well looked after otherwise it is prone to corrosion.

Comfort is fairly good on the Yamaha TRX 850 but only for the rider, it gets more comfortable at speed and extended periods in town can become tiresome. Although the Yamaha TRX 850 is quite a good bike to ride for a bit, I can understand why it didn’t sell so well. If you find one for a good price then I would say go for it but otherwise there are better bikes out there.

It's like this; if this bike was Italian, the world would of raved about it and bought them in their hordes. As a package, this bike delivers. Not too exotic to not personalize, and not too much to do to make this bike an absolute gem. Practical, reliable, attractive, one of the best sounding bikes you'll ever hear, and handles beautifully. get a Laverda 750 twin, up it to 850, add a Ducati trellis frame, combine a well thought out Japanese design, and you have the TRX. At 190kgs without even trying to peel the weight off, it doesn't feel like an 850. In the tight, they will never embarrass you against the hperbikes. For me, and dare I say others, the TRX is a modern classic in an old fashion way. They ooze character, and they grow on you very quickly. most folk are reluctant to oart with them once the "bug" has bitten; and it will. I read a report where this person had 42 bikes in his life, and he rated the TRX as the bike to have. What more do you need in a bike? A motorcyclists motorcycle. A no brainer really. My TRX is here to stay, get your own! PS ; and Lara Croft had one LOL.

The TRX is and always has been an extremely underated motorcycle that can now be picked up for bargain money. You often find cbr`s and the like from the same year going for almost double the money of a trx.Well now it`s time to let you all into a little secret.....the TRX is half the price but twice the bike!!dare to be different, because the trx has masses of personality and you get the same attention as if your riding a rare ducati or similar. The TRX is a winner!!!!

Well am I glad I listened to my Brother he kept telling me to get one as he has owned one for two years,so I did and what a great bike it is. I cant remember when I have had so much fun on a bike and I have had loads over the years. Great sound with the after market cans, does country lanes like it should and enough power to make it fun. Give it a handful and it powers out of the corners with enough feedback to make it feel safe. I have upgraded the front brakes to R1 Blue spots which means getting to a corner faster and braking that bit later all ads to the appeal cant fault it and if you are looking for something that you don't see comming the other way every ten minutes on a sunday, sounds awesome and handles brilliantly then go find a good one and get out there, you wont want to part with it
Certainly makes the heads turn in town as you just cant help twisting the throttle to hear the twin thumping exhaust notes

This is one hell of a bike!
I started riding back in 1990 and I've had everything from Suzuki trailies to a CBR 6/9 conversion. And up until I bought this big twin I was preaching to the Gixer gods through and through. The TRX 850 is great! You can trickle through your town centre in first gear or scratch through the lake district like a lunatic, this big ole twin does it all, I love mine.

As said by many, a very underated twin. has good torque and mid range power. put on a set of race cans and it sounds awesome and turns lots of heads. would recommend front caliper upgrade with braided lines for better stopping power. i find the bike to be very comfortable and useable. handling is also very good, turns into corners well and powers out with ease. regular servicing will keep the bike trouble free, dont be put off by higher mileage bikes as long as they have regular servicing carried out.

These have got so much character you'll not believe. I do 500 miles a week on mine and have no problems. By the way Ken, I've seen yours; sounds good but belly pan looks a bit sh*te mind....

Thinking of trading up from my Kawasaki GPZ500S (ok bike, not exceptional) to a TRX850 or an old 600cc four (cbr, zzr, rf, fzr) I just wondered how practical the TRX is. I'm at uni and do long distances with loads of luggage and use my bike everyday for everything (I even carry my minimoto around on it!) so it has to be practical, comfortable, reliable and not mind plenty of Welsh rain. Also, when did they go from the 180 degree crank to the 270 V-Twin-alike and is it much better? So, would the TRX fit the bill or would I be better off with a 600.

This bike is one of the biking worlds best kept secrets. Put on a pair of Remus grand prix exhaust cans, Dynojet kit & it flys ! I have also replaced the brake hoses with braided steel so now it stops in a hurry. Go and buy one if you want to go hunting...

Undervalued twin, bags of character, decent build quality for a Yamaha! Sensible mods include braided brake hoses, front brake calipers from a R1/R6 - will bolt on without any hassle. Aftermarket exhausts - street legal of course(hehehe). Double bubble screen is useful if you intend to do any significant distance work. Uprate the front fork springs with whatever takes your fancy. Great bike let down by it's initial stupidly high price, now very realistic and affordable. Best in red with a silver frame (just like mine). If you haven't got one, get one!
