NEW MOTORBIKE REVIEW - YAMAHA YZF-R6R
FLY BY WIRE
* What’s It All About?
The Yamaha YZF-R6RR is all about one thing – scalpel sharp handling. No, make that two things because it’s impossible to ignore the searing acceleration from the 110bhp engine that revs to a heady 17,500rpm. Then there’s the fly-by-wire throttle system, the first on any sports bike. In fact, the 2006 R6R is about a whole bunch of innovations aimed at once again establishing the bike’s position as the 600cc supersports bike to have.
Let’s take a look at that throttle system first. Perhaps fly by wire is a bit of a misnomer because there is a conventional throttle cable running from the twist grip. This is there to retain a conventional feel. It doesn’t actually connect to a throttle butterfly. Instead, it turns a spool on a black box, whose electronics tell the engine’s computer how much fuel to squirt in. The ‘brain’ takes air temperature, intake pressure, crank position and engine revs amongst others into consideration before deciding how much fuel to inject. It does this 1,000 times a second. It’s smarter than you
* What Does It Cost?
Expect to hand over around £7,500 for the privilege of getting your name on the registration document of the 2006 Yamaha YZF-R6R. No, it’s not cheap and it’s an act of faith by Yamaha to price it above the current class leaders, the Honda CBR6R00RR and the Kawasaki ZX-6R, but once you clap eyes on that shape, the astonishing level of detailing, the silky paint finish and the beautifully finished exhaust, you’ll think it’s worth it. Notable omission? There’s no steering damper. The pillion pegs are knocking about in the bottom of the bike’s passenger crate, in case you’re interested.
* How Does It Handle?
The Yamaha YZF-R6R handles pretty much how you’d expect a bike to handle that tips the scales at a mere 161kg and which has inherited a whole load of MotoGP genetics. The 1,380mm wheelbase ensures rapid turn in and the steering geometry closely mimic’s that of its bigger brother, the R1. That’ll mean you’ll need to be on your mettle on badly surfaced roads, but it endows the R6R with a level of front end bite on decent macadam that‘s way beyond the ken of the old model. Yamaha claim 52.5 per cent of the bike’s weight sits on the front wheel, which is a mere gnat’s away form Valentino Rossi’s ride.
The new 41mm upside down front forks are rock solid and the 310mm front brakes are well up to the job of repeated high-speed decelerations. The mirrors, number plate and pillion hangers are all designed to be easily demountable for trackday use.
* Verdict
Mission accomplished. The Yamaha YZF-R6R rewrites the supersports 600 rulebook once again. If you live for the weekends when you can get some seat time at a track, this is the bike for you. It doesn’t pretend to be versatile. Twenty minutes of city riding will make your wrists scream for mercy but get it on home turf and it feels unbeatable.

I'm on ny 4th R6, all have been '99 models, sold em cos I needed money, or fancied a change. But I keep coming back because they tick all the boxes for me. I use the bike for track days, touring, work on occasions (instructor)and having fun. I have never had a breakdown, other than dropping in the wet at silverstone - but even then the crash bobbins did the job - only the right hand engine case was broken, and a scratched belly pan.
The handling is fine, my current one was set too hard, I just changed back to standard settings as per mr. Haynes, and its fine. I use metzeler racetecs or Dunlop 208s. One tooth smaller on the front sprocket creates more fun and less front tyre wear :-)
I wouldn't recommend one as a 1st bike after test, but there is no better value for money bike out there, in my humble opinion. I have ridden 05 and 07 models, which are even sharper, even a little too clinical and perfect. But for £2000 a '99 model is great, and I cannot justify spending at least twice that to upgrade to the newer models. Sports bike on a shoestring! Go for it, but not as a first bike, too lively for the inexperienced.

These bikes are awesome, one of the best 600's Ive owned.
These bikes are known to be a bit twitchy, but honestly I dont think they are.
The 2002 R6's were the last year of the carb models.
The power is 120bhp with 68.1nm Torque,
Seat height is a standard 820mm (32.3 inchs)
Dry weight is a light 169kg and comes with an ok 17 litre tank - as for the mpg this i find very good and is on par with my old CBR600F which are known for being economical.
This bike is has been very reliable for me and would recommend it to anyone.
The Pros I find are
Digital Speedo
Switch between MP/H and KM/H
Comfortable
Brakes are great
Handling
Perfomance
Modern styling
Cons
Slow Manouvers can be tricky for the inexperienced
Very little space under the pillion seat
Servicing items could be cheaper
Spark plugs a bit hard to get at
My legs - I am 5ft 5 and could just touch the floor on tip toes but am fine on one foot at lights but I cut the seat 1 inch and is much more comforting.
Common 2nd gear slip on 1999 - 2001 R6's, loads were recalled so check this in the history.
Thanks for reading

This is a great first bike. I bought it without knowing how to ride and learned on the R6. It has plenty of get-up throughout the early to mid power band and really hums when up over 8,000 rpm.
I would recommend this bike to anyone I know.

OH MY GOD, my first bike, only past my test last week and pick up an R6 2005. This goes and goes and it just accerlerates so fast. Probably not the best learning bike but I just get on it and smile when riding. Looking forward to learning how to ride properly and not just past a test. Will report back later

Owned for 8 months now and what a bike, looks superb (in blue) - always getting admiring looks and comments, speed is awsome after 8000rpm and useable power throughout. Ultra reliable never had a problem, corners like its on rails, just point and shoot!!! Deserves respect, your ability will run out long before the bikes does!!!! SUPERB

I have ridden bike for one year and put on 4200 kilometers. In terms of power it is amazing as long as the engine is spun up into the high end. My last bike was a 04 V max and the R6 is not even close in the torque department. However top speed is amazing, so much so that it should not be seen except in a closed circuit situation. Reliability is flawless, fuel mileage very good averaging a little ove 40 mpg ( imperial). This bike is a sword and carves corners like nothing else I've ever ridden. Will I keep it? No I am very fickle and love bikes and am looking at 06 machines already. 675 Trumpet..sporty 1200 R FZ1 hmm so many fine bikes today
